Corrosion behaviour of nitrided ferritic stainless steels for use in solid oxide fuel cell devices
Plasma nitriding was applied to ferritic stainless steel substrates to improve their performances as interconnects for solid oxide fuel cell devices. The samples underwent electrical conductivity test and SEM/EDS, TEM/EDS, environmental-SEM analyses. The first stages of corrosion were recorded in-situ with the e-SEM. Nitriding is effective in limiting the undesired chromium evaporation from the steel substrates and accelerates the corrosion kinetics, but its influence of the electrical conductivity is ambiguous. No intergranular corrosion is found in the steel substrate after long time operation. Nitriding helps commercially competitive porous coating to improve chromium retention properties of metal interconnects
Scheduling aircraft landings - the static case
This is the publisher version of the article, obtained from the link below.In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling aircraft (plane) landings at an airport. This problem is one of deciding a landing time for each plane such that each plane lands within a predetermined time window and that separation criteria between the landing of a plane and the landing of all successive planes are respected. We present a mixed-integer zero–one formulation of the problem for the single runway case and extend it to the multiple runway case. We strengthen the linear programming relaxations of these formulations by introducing additional constraints. Throughout, we discuss how our formulations can be used to model a number of issues (choice of objective function, precedence restrictions, restricting the number of landings in a given time period, runway workload balancing) commonly encountered in practice. The problem is solved optimally using linear programming-based tree search. We also present an effective heuristic algorithm for the problem. Is acting prosocially beneficial for the credit market?
This article argues that behaving prosocially implies more transparent information during the negotiation process of a financial contract and more cooperation among the parties to respect the terms of the contract. For this reason this work considers interest rate on loans and insolvency rate functions of prosocial behaviour along with the traditional socio-economic and financial collaterals. The context of study is Italy and the analysis is developed at a cross-regional level. We collect data from the two reports on “Relatives and Safety Net” produced by the Italian Centre Bureau of Statistics (ISTAT) in 1998 and 2003 and from the reports on “Regional Economics” produced by the Bank of Italy in the same years. A two-period panel model shows two interesting outcomes. Firstly, regions with a higher proportion of prosocial individuals report lower interest rates on loans and insolvency rates. Secondly, when we include the efficiency of legal enforcement, evidence supports the idea that a more efficient legal framework can act as a more reliable transmission mechanism of institutional norms and facilitate the internalisation of social norms
Electromagnetic emission of white dwarf binary mergers
It has been recently proposed that the ejected matter from white dwarf (WD)
binary mergers can produce transient, optical and infrared emission similar to
the "kilonovae" of neutron star (NS) binary mergers. To confirm this we
calculate the electromagnetic emission from WD-WD mergers and compare with
kilonova observations. We simulate WD-WD mergers leading to a massive, fast
rotating, highly magnetized WD with an adapted version of the
smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics (SPH) code Phantom. We thus obtain initial
conditions for the ejecta such as escape velocity, mass and initial position
and distribution. The subsequent thermal and dynamical evolution of the ejecta
is obtained by integrating the energy-conservation equation accounting for
expansion cooling and a heating source given by the fallback accretion onto the
newly-formed WD and its magneto-dipole radiation. We show that magnetospheric
processes in the merger can lead to a prompt, short gamma-ray emission of up to
erg in a timescale of - s. The bulk of the ejecta
initially expands non-relativistically with velocity and then it
accelerates to due to the injection of fallback accretion energy. The
ejecta become transparent at optical wavelengths around days
post-merger with a luminosity - erg s. The X-ray
emission from the fallback accretion becomes visible around -
day post-merger with a luminosity of erg s. We also predict
the post-merger time at which the central WD should appear as a pulsar

Greenbelt Homes Pilot Energy Efficiency Program Phase 1 Summary: Existing Conditions and Baseline Energy Use
A multi-year pilot energy efficiency retrofit project has been undertaken by Greenbelt Homes, Inc, (GHI) a 1,566 co-operative of circa 1930 and '40 homes. The three predominate construction methods of the townhomes in the community are materials common to the area and climate zone including 8" CMU block, wood frame with brick veneer and wood frame with vinyl siding. GHI has established a pilot project that will serve as a basis for decision making for the roll out of a decade-long community upgrade program that will incorporate energy efficiency to the building envelope and equipment with the modernization of other systems like plumbing, mechanical equipment, and cladding
Induced gravitational collapse at extreme cosmological distances: the case of GRB 090423
CONTEXT: The induced gravitational collapse (IGC) scenario has been
introduced in order to explain the most energetic gamma ray bursts (GRBs),
Eiso=10^{52}-10^{54}erg, associated with type Ib/c supernovae (SNe). It has led
to the concept of binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe) originating in a tight
binary system composed by a FeCO core on the verge of a SN explosion and a
companion neutron star (NS). Their evolution is characterized by a rapid
sequence of events: [...]. AIMS: We investigate whether GRB 090423, one of the
farthest observed GRB at z=8.2, is a member of the BdHN family. METHODS: We
compare and contrast the spectra, the luminosity evolution and the
detectability in the observations by Swift of GRB 090423 with the corresponding
ones of the best known BdHN case, GRB 090618. RESULTS: Identification of
constant slope power-law behavior in the late X-ray emission of GRB 090423 and
its overlapping with the corresponding one in GRB 090618, measured in a common
rest frame, represents the main result of this article. This result represents
a very significant step on the way to using the scaling law properties, proven
in Episode 3 of this BdHN family, as a cosmological standard candle.
CONCLUSIONS: Having identified GRB 090423 as a member of the BdHN family, we
can conclude that SN events, leading to NS formation, can already occur already
at z=8.2, namely at 650 Myr after the Big Bang. It is then possible that these
BdHNe originate stem from 40-60 M_{\odot} binaries. They are probing the
Population II stars after the completion and possible disappearance of

A common behavior in the late X-ray afterglow of energetic GRB-SN systems
The possibility to divide GRBs in different subclasses allow to understand
better the physics underlying their emission mechanisms and progenitors. The
induced gravitational collapse scenario proposes a binary progenitor to explain
the time-sequence in GRBs-SNe. We show the existence of a common behavior of
the late decay of the X-ray afterglow emission of this subclass of GRBs,
pointing to a common physical mechanism of their late emission, consistent with
