Universal fluctuations in the support of the random walk
A random walk starts from the origin of a d-dimensional lattice. The
occupation number n(x,t) equals unity if after t steps site x has been visited
by the walk, and zero otherwise. We study translationally invariant sums M(t)
of observables defined locally on the field of occupation numbers. Examples are
the number S(t) of visited sites; the area E(t) of the (appropriately defined)
surface of the set of visited sites; and, in dimension d=3, the Euler index of
this surface. In d > 3, the averages (t) all increase linearly with t as
t-->infinity. We show that in d=3, to leading order in an asymptotic expansion
in t, the deviations from average Delta M(t)= M(t)-(t) are, up to a
normalization, all identical to a single "universal" random variable. This
result resembles an earlier one in dimension d=2; we show that this

Surgical management and longterm follow-up of non-parasitic hepatic cysts
BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing use of laparoscopic techniques, the optimal surgical approach for cystic liver disease has not been well defined. This study aims to determine the optimum operative approach for these patients. METHODS: Data were identified from the Lothian Surgical Audit, case note review and general practitioner contact. Patients were contacted and asked to complete the SF-36 questionnaire on quality of life. RESULTS: A total of 102 patients (67 with simple cysts, 31 with polycystic liver disease [PCLD], four with cystic tumours) underwent 62 laparoscopic deroofings, 15 open deroofings, 36 resections and one liver transplant between June 1985 and April 2006. The median follow-up was 77 months (range 3â250 months). Morbidity and recurrent symptom rates after laparoscopic surgery were greater in PCLD patients compared with simple cyst patients, at 31% (four patients) vs. 15% (seven patients) and 85% (11 patients) vs. 29% (24 patients), respectively. Four patients with simple cysts and eight with PCLD required further surgery. All patients with simple cysts had comparable quality of life after surgery. Patients with recurrent symptoms after surgery for PCLD had a significantly better quality of life following laparoscopic deroofing than after resection. CONCLUSIONS: Most simple cysts can be managed laparoscopically, but there is a definite role for open resection in some patients. Open deroofing is the preferred approach for a dominant cyst pattern in PCLD, whereas resection is necessary for diffuse cystic disease
Diagnostic accuracy of Doppler ultrasound technique of the penile arteries in correlation to selective arteriography
In 63% of 265 patients with erectile dysfunction a relevant arterial inflow disturbance was found by Doppler ultrasound examination. Correlation between Doppler and arteriography in 58 patients showed an accuracy of 95% in detecting penile arteries and an accuracy of 91% in discovering a pathological arterial pattern (arterial anomaly or arteriosclerotic obstruction). In 15 patients the arterial inflow was measured additionally by Doppler ultrasound technique after intracavernosal injection of vasoactive drugs (IIVD) (7.5 mg papaverine and 0.25 mg phentolamine). This technique proved to be more reliable than in the flaccid state and markedly facilitated localization and assessment of pathological changes of the cavernosal arteries

The Earliest Near-infrared Time-series Spectroscopy of a Type Ia Supernova
We present ten medium-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio near-infrared
(NIR) spectra of SN 2011fe from SpeX on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility
(IRTF) and Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph (GNIRS) on Gemini North, obtained
as part of the Carnegie Supernova Project. This data set constitutes the
earliest time-series NIR spectroscopy of a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), with the
first spectrum obtained at 2.58 days past the explosion and covering -14.6 to
+17.3 days relative to B-band maximum. C I {\lambda}1.0693 {\mu}m is detected
in SN 2011fe with increasing strength up to maximum light. The delay in the
onset of the NIR C I line demonstrates its potential to be an effective tracer
of unprocessed material. For the first time in a SN Ia, the early rapid decline
of the Mg II {\lambda}1.0927 {\mu}m velocity was observed, and the subsequent
velocity is remarkably constant. The Mg II velocity during this constant phase
locates the inner edge of carbon burning and probes the conditions under which
the transition from deflagration to detonation occurs. We show that the Mg II
velocity does not correlate with the optical light-curve decline rate
{\Delta}m15. The prominent break at ~1.5 {\mu}m is the main source of concern
for NIR k-correction calculations. We demonstrate here that the feature has a
uniform time evolution among SNe Ia, with the flux ratio across the break
strongly correlated with {\Delta}m15. The predictability of the strength and
the onset of this feature suggests that the associated k-correction

Cranked Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov Theory: Superdeformed Bands in the Region
Cranked Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) theory is presented as an
extension of Relativistic Mean Field theory with pairing correlations to the
rotating frame. Pairing correlations are taken into account by a finite range
two-body force of Gogny type and approximate particle number projection is
performed by Lipkin-Nogami method. This theory is applied to the description of
yrast superdeformed rotational bands observed in even-even nuclei of the mass region. Using the well established parameter sets NL1 for the
Lagrangian and D1S for the pairing force one obtains a very successful
description of data such as kinematic () and dynamic ()
moments of inertia without any adjustment of new parameters. Within the present
experimental accuracy the calculated transition quadrupole moments agree

Gorenstein homological algebra and universal coefficient theorems
We study criteria for a ringâor more generally, for a small categoryâto be Gorenstein and for a module over it to be of finite projective dimension. The goal is to unify the universal coefficient theorems found in the literature and to develop machinery for proving new ones. Among the universal coefficient theorems covered by our methods we find, besides all the classic examples, several exotic examples arising from the KK-theory of C*-algebras and also Neemanâs BrownâAdams representability theorem for compactly generated categories

This paper provides a review of groupware technology and products. The purpose of this review is to investigate the appropriateness of current groupware technology as the basis for future enterprise systems and evaluate its role in realising, the currently emerging, Virtual Enterprise model for business organisation. It also identifies in which way current technological phenomena will transform groupware technology and will drive the development of the enterprise systems of the future
Synaptic abnormalities in the infralimbic cortex of a model of congenital depression
Multiple lines of evidence suggest that disturbances in excitatory transmission contribute to depression. Whether these defects involve the number, size, or composition of glutamatergic contacts is unclear. This study used recently introduced procedures for fluorescence deconvolution tomography in a well-studied rat model of congenital depression to characterize excitatory synapses in layer I of infralimbic cortex, a region involved in mood disorders, and of primary somatosensory cortex. Three groups were studied: (1) rats bred for learned helplessness (cLH); (2) rats resistant to learned helplessness (cNLH); and (3) control Sprague Dawley rats. In fields within infralimbic cortex, cLH rats had the same numerical density of synapses, immunolabeled for either the postsynaptic density (PSD) marker PSD95 or the presynaptic protein synaptophysin, as controls. However, PSD95 immunolabeling intensities were substantially lower in cLH rats, as were numerical densities of synapse-sized clusters of the AMPA receptor subunit GluA1. Similar but less pronounced differences (comparable numerical densities but reduced immunolabeling intensity for PSD95) were found in the somatosensory cortex. In contrast, non-helpless rats had 25% more PSDs than either cLH or control rats without any increase in synaptophysin-labeled terminal frequency. Compared with controls, both cLH and cNLH rats had fewer GABAergic contacts. These results indicate that congenital tendencies that increase or decrease depression-like behavior differentially affect excitatory synapses
Time-odd components in the mean field of rotating superdeformed nuclei
Rotation-induced time-odd components in the nuclear mean field are analyzed
using the Hartree-Fock cranking approach with effective interactions SIII,
SkM*, and SkP. Identical dynamical moments are obtained for
pairs of superdeformed bands Tb(2)--Dy(1) and
Gd(2)--Tb(1). The corresponding relative alignments strongly
depend on which time-odd mean-field terms are taken into account in the
