    Estrategias evolutivas como una opción para la optimización de funciones no lineales con restricciones

    Estrategias de evolución es una técnica bio-inspirada, eficiente y robusta para resolver problemas de optimización donde el espacio de soluciones es no restringido. Sin embargo, esta suposición es irreal en muchos casos porque el espacio de soluciones es limitado por fronteras complejas en la forma de restricciones tanto lineales como no lineales. En este artículo de investigación, se propone una modificación al algoritmo original de estrategias de evolución para optimizar problemas donde el espacio de soluciones es limitado usando restricciones complejas. El método propuesto es basado en el uso de una función de penalización la cual es cero dentro de la región factible, e igual al máximo valor dentro de la región factible cuando se considera un punto que es no factible. La aproximación propuesta es probada usando seis problemas de prueba bien conocidos. En todos los casos, esta aproximación encontró un punto óptimo igual o menor que los valores reportados en la literatura

    Cambios en la heterogeneidad del paisaje y organización espacial de bosques nativos en Patagonia, Argentina

    Native forests in Patagonia have been influenced by human activities since the beginning of the past century. Nevertheless, the availability of aerial photographs to conduct analysis of changes at a landscape level due to anthropic factors is generally restricted to the last decades. Therefore this study was aimed to detect changes of the forest landscape heterogeneity during the last thirty years in the northwest region of Chubut, the middle-located Patagonian province, and to study spatial patterning of forest landscapes. For the first goal, we focused on a 2,000 ha landscape unit with prevailing Austrocedrus chilensis forests. In 466 ha covered by these forests, 41% of this area was negatively affected by forest fires, timber logging followed by livestock grazing and substitution with pine plantations. In contrast, growth of young Austrocedrus forests was verified in 9% of the forest area. Spatial patterns were studied on an area of 10,000 ha showing a high heterogeneity of the distinctive landscape configurations.Los bosques nativos en Patagonia han estado influidos por la acción del hombre desde principios del siglo pasado. Sin embargo, la disponibilidad de fotografías aéreas para efectuar análisis de cambios debidos a factores antrópicos a escala de paisaje está generalmente restringida a las últimas décadas. En consecuencia, este estudio estuvo orientado a detectar y analizar los cambios de la heterogeneidad del paisaje forestal durante los últimos treinta años en la región noroeste de Chubut, la provincia central de Patagonia en Argentina, y a estudiar la organización espacial de paisajes forestales. Para el primer objetivo, nos concentramos en una unidad de paisaje de 2.000 ha con predominancia de bosques de Austrocedrus chilensis. En 466 ha cubiertas con estos bosques, 41% de esta área fue negativamente afectado por incendios forestales, extracciones forestales seguidas de pastoreo y reemplazo de bosques nativos por plantaciones de pinos. En contraste, el crecimiento de bosques jóvenes de Austrocedrus se verificó en el 9% del área forestal.     Preference for Risk Management Information Sources: Implications for Extension and Outreach Programming

    This article examines farmers’ preferences for various risk management information sources. Our results suggest that information from risk management experts, in-depth materials studied on their own, and popular press outlets tend to be preferred and are ranked highly by producers. Using a regression model to investigate farmer/farm attributes that affect preference for a particular risk management information source, we find that younger farmers with college education, higher leverage, assets greater than $1 million, risk-loving attitudes, and who have used professional services (marketing consultants) tend to prefer information from risk management experts, the Internet, and marketing clubs/other producers.     Non-uniqueness in conformal formulations of the Einstein constraints

    Standard methods in non-linear analysis are used to show that there exists a parabolic branching of solutions of the Lichnerowicz-York equation with an unscaled source. We also apply these methods to the extended conformal thin sandwich formulation and show that if the linearised system develops a kernel solution for sufficiently large initial data then we obtain parabolic solution curves for the conformal factor, lapse and shift identical to those found numerically by Pfeiffer and York.     Chromium at High Pressures: Weak Coupling and Strong Fluctuations in an Itinerant Antiferromagnet

    The spin- and charge-density-wave order parameters of the itinerant antiferromagnet chromium are measured directly with non-resonant x-ray diffraction as the system is driven towards its quantum critical point with high pressure using a diamond anvil cell. The exponential decrease of the spin and charge diffraction intensities with pressure confirms the harmonic scaling of spin and charge, while the evolution of the incommensurate ordering vector provides important insight into the difference between pressure and chemical doping as means of driving quantum phase transitions. Measurement of the charge density wave over more than two orders of magnitude of diffraction intensity provides the clearest demonstration to date of a weakly-coupled, BCS-like ground state. Evidence for the coexistence of this weakly-coupled ground state with high-energy excitations and pseudogap formation above the ordering temperature in chromium, the charge-ordered perovskite manganites, and the blue bronzes, among other such systems, raises fundamental questions about the distinctions between weak and strong coupling.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures (8 in color

    Win-Win for Dairy Farms: Heifers Raised on Pasture Reduce Cost and Produce More Milk at First Lactation

    Pastures under good management promote environmental, economic, and animal welfare advantages. However, comparisons of animal performance for pasture-raised dairy heifers versus confinement-raised dairy heifers are scarce. A study was conducted to evaluate the performance of dairy heifers raised on pasture or in confinement. Heifers raised on pasture had similar body weight and age at calving and greater dry matter intake in the end of 2nd grazing season. Cost of heifers raised on pasture was 26.7% less in the first grazing season and 58.4% less in the second grazing season compared to heifers raised in confinement. Heifers raised on pasture had greater dry matter intake and milk yield through first lactation. Physiological adaptation and nutritional benefits are involved in those benefits through lactation. Mammary gland development before breeding and increased feed intake before calving might be the main drivers for the advantages found for heifers raised on pasture compared to heifers raised in confinement. However, further studies are needed to evaluate nutritional and physiological differences of heifers raised on pasture compared to heifers raised in confinement

    A fast stroboscopic spectral method for rotating systems in numerical relativity

    We present a numerical technique for solving evolution equations, as the wave equation, in the description of rotating astrophysical compact objects in comoving coordinates, which avoids the problems associated with the light cylinder. The technique implements a fast spectral matching between two domains in relative rotation: an inner spherical domain, comoving with the sources and lying strictly inside the light cylinder, and an outer inertial spherical shell. Even though the emphasis is placed on spectral techniques, the matching is independent of the specific manner in which equations are solved inside each domain, and can be adapted to different schemes.     Non-local scattering control in coupled resonator networks

    We demonstrate scattering control of Gaussian-like wave packets propagating with constant envelope velocity and invariant waist through coupled resonator optical waveguides (CROW) via an external resonator coupled to multiple sites of the CROW. We calculate the analytical reflectance and transmittance using standard scattering methods from waveguide quantum electrodynamics and show it is possible to approximate them for an external resonator detuned to the CROW. Our analytical and approximate results are in good agreement with numerical simulations. We engineer various configurations using an external resonator coupled to two sites of a CROW to show light trapping with effective exponential decay between the coupling sites, wave packet splitting into two pairs of identical Gaussian-like wave packets, and a non-local Mach-Zehnder interferometer.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figure

    High-Resolution Melting (HRM) of the Cytochrome B Gene: A Powerful Approach to Identify Blood-Meal Sources in Chagas Disease Vectors

    Methods to determine blood-meal sources of hematophagous Triatominae bugs (Chagas disease vectors) are serological or based on PCR employing species-specific primers or heteroduplex analysis, but these are expensive, inaccurate, or problematic when the insect has fed on more than one species. To solve those problems, we developed a technique based on HRM analysis of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome B (Cyt b). This technique recognized 14 species involved in several ecoepidemiological cycles of the transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi and it was suitable with DNA extracted from intestinal content and feces 30 days after feeding, revealing a resolution power that can display mixed feedings. Field samples were analyzed showing blood meal sources corresponding to domestic, peridomiciliary and sylvatic cycles. The technique only requires a single pair of primers that amplify the Cyt b gene in vertebrates and no other standardization, making it quick, easy, relatively inexpensive, and highly accurate
