On the predictive power of Local Scale Invariance
Local Scale Invariance (LSI) is a theory for anisotropic critical phenomena
designed in the spirit of conformal invariance. For a given representation of
its generators it makes non-trivial predictions about the form of universal
scaling functions. In the past decade several representations have been
identified and the corresponding predictions were confirmed for various
anisotropic critical systems. Such tests are usually based on a comparison of
two-point quantities such as autocorrelation and response functions. The
present work highlights a potential problem of the theory in the sense that it
may predict any type of two-point function. More specifically, it is argued
that for a given two-point correlator it is possible to construct a
representation of the generators which exactly reproduces this particular
correlator. This observation calls for a critical examination of the predictive
content of the theory.Comment: 17 pages, 2 eps figure
‘Your daily reality is rubbish’: Waste as a means of urban exclusion in the suspended spaces of East Jerusalem
Drawing on ethnographic and visual research, this article examines the role of waste in two areas of occupied East Jerusalem cut off from the city by the Separation Wall and military checkpoints, Kufr Aqab and Shuafat Refugee Camp as well as their immediate surroundings. In asking how urban exclusion operates on the margins of the city, we argue that rubbish can disclose broader socio-spatial relations at work in Jerusalem from the ground up. We find that waste serves to reduce the ambiguity at work in these interstitial zones by furthering exclusion – it operates through the urban everyday where the legal and political situations are in suspension. Conceptually, we contribute to the discussion on spatial stigma associated with infrastructural violence by arguing for a multi-layered understanding of the way waste ‘works’ in urban exclusion. Three registers mutually constitute each other in this process: the materiality of waste with its embodied and affective interactions, the symbolic and discursive violence associated with waste, as well as spatialised stigma and bordering processes
Ageing in disordered magnets and local scale-invariance
The ageing of the bond-disordered two-dimensional Ising model quenched to
below its critical point is studied through the two-time autocorrelator and
thermoremanent magnetization (TRM). The corresponding ageing exponents are
determined. The form of the scaling function of the TRM is well described by
the theory of local scale-invariance.Comment: Latex2e, with epl macros, 7 pages, final for

Generation of multi-modal dialogue for a net environment
In this paper an architecture and special purpose markup language for simulated affective face-to-face communication is presented. In systems based on this architecture, users will be able to watch embodied conversational agents interact with each other in virtual locations on the internet. The markup language, or Rich Representation Language (RRL), has been designed to provide an integrated representation of speech, gesture, posture and facial animation
Context-specific grasp movement representation in the macaque anterior intraparietal area
To perform grasping movements, the hand is shaped according to the form of the target object and the intended manipulation, which in turn depends on the context of the action. The anterior intraparietal cortex (AIP) is strongly involved in the sensorimotor transformation of grasping movements, but the extent to which it encodes context-specific information for hand grasping is unclear. To explore this issue, we recorded 571 single-units in AIP of two macaques during a delayed grasping task, in which animals were instructed by an external context cue (LED) to perform power or precision grips on a handle that was presented in various orientations. While 55% of the recorded neurons encoded the object orientation from the cue epoch on, the number of cells encoding the grip type increased from 25% during the cue epoch to 58% during movement execution. Furthermore, a classification of cells according to the time of their tuning onset revealed differences in the function and anatomical location of early- versus late-tuned cells. In a cue separation task, when the object was presented first, neurons representing power or precision grips were activated simultaneously until the actual grip type was instructed. In contrast, when the grasp type instruction was presented before the object, type information was only weakly represented in AIP, but was strongly encoded after the grasp target was revealed. We conclude that AIP encodes context specific hand grasping movements to perceived objects, but in the absence of a grasp target, the encoding of context information is weak
Persistent photovoltage in methylammonium lead iodide perovskite solar cells
Open circuit voltage decay measurements are performed on methylammonium lead
iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) perovskite solar cells to investigate the charge carrier
recombination dynamics. The measurements are compared to the two reference
polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells based on P3HT:PC60BM and
PTB7:PC70BM blends. In the perovskite devices, two very different time domains
of the voltage decay are found, with a first drop on a short time scale that is
similar to the organic solar cells. However, two major differences are also
observed. 65-70% of the maximum photovoltage persists on much longer
timescales, and the recombination dynamics are dependent on the illumination
intensity.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Ageing in bosonic particle-reaction models with long-range transport
Ageing in systems without detailed balance is studied in bosonic contact and
pair-contact processes with Levy diffusion. In the ageing regime, the dynamical
scaling of the two-time correlation function and two-time response function is
found and analysed. Exact results for non-equilibrium exponents and scaling
functions are derived. The behaviour of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio is
analysed. A passage time from the quasi-stationary regime to the ageing regime
is defined, in qualitative agreement with kinetic spherical models and p-spin
spherical glasses.Comment: Latex2e, 24 pages, with 9 figures include
