Spatial and Temporal Variations in Small-Scale Galactic HI Structure Toward 3C~138
We present three epochs of VLBA observations of Galactic HI absorption toward
the quasar 3C~138 with resolutions of 20 mas (~ 10 AU). This analysis includes
VLBA data from observations in 1999 and 2002 along with a reexamination of 1995
VLBA data. Improved data reduction and imaging techniques have led to an order
of magnitude improvement in sensitivity compared to previous work. With these
new data we confirm the previously detected milliarcsecond scale spatial
variations in the HI opacity at the level of Delta(tau_{max}) =0.50 \pm 0.05.
The typical size scale of the optical depth variations is ~ 50 mas or 25 AU. In
addition, for the first time we see clear evidence for temporal variations in
the HI opacity over the seven year time span of our three epochs of data. We
also attempted to detect the magnetic field strength in the HI gas using the
Zeeman effect. From this analysis we have been able to place a 3 sigma upper
limit on the magnetic field strength per pixel of ~45 muG. We have also been
able to calculate for the first time the plane of sky covering fraction of the
small scale HI gas of ~10%. We also find that the line widths of the
milliarcsecond sizescale HI features are comparable to those determined from
previous single dish measurements toward 3C~138, suggesting that the opacity
variations cannot be due to changes in the HI spin temperature. From these
results we favor a density enhancement interpretation for the small scale HI
structures, although these enhancements appear to be of short duration and are

On the Solutions of the Lorentz-Dirac Equation
We discuss the unstable character of the solutions of the Lorentz-Dirac
equation and stress the need of methods like order reduction to derive a
physically acceptable equation of motion. The discussion is illustrated with
the paradigmatic example of the non-relativistic harmonic oscillator with
radiation reaction. We also illustrate removal of the noncasual
pre-acceleration with the introduction of a small correction in the

Radio Monitoring of the Tidal Disruption Event Swift J164449.3+573451. I. Jet Energetics and the Pristine Parsec-Scale Environment of a Supermassive Black Hole
We present continued radio observations of the tidal disruption event
SwiftJ164449.3+573451 extending to \sim216 days after discovery. The data are
part of a long-term program to monitor the expansion and energy scale of the
relativistic outflow, and to trace the parsec-scale environment around a
previously-dormant supermassive black hole (SMBH). The new observations reveal
a significant change in the radio evolution starting at \sim1 month, with a
brightening at all frequencies that requires an increase in the energy by about
an order of magnitude, and an overall density profile around the SMBH of rho
\propto r^{-3/2} (0.1-1.2 pc) with a significant flattening at r\sim0.4-0.6 pc.
The increase in energy cannot be explained with continuous injection from an L
\propto t^{-5/3} tail, which is observed in the X-rays. Instead, we conclude
that the relativistic jet was launched with a wide range of Lorentz factors,
obeying E(>Gamma) \propto Gamma^{-2.5}. The similar ratio of duration to
dynamical timescale for Sw1644+57 and GRBs suggests that this result may be
applicable to GRBs as well. The radial density profile may be indicative of
Bondi accretion, with the inferred flattening at r\sim0.5 pc in good agreement
with the Bondi radius for a \sim10^6 M_sun black hole. The density at \sim0.5
pc is about a factor of 30 times lower than inferred for the Milky Way galactic
center, potentially due to a smaller number of mass-shedding massive stars.
From our latest observations (\sim216 d) we find that the jet energy is
E_{iso}\sim5x10^{53} erg (E_j\sim2.4x10^{51} erg for theta_j=0.1), the radius
is r\sim1.2 pc, the Lorentz factor is Gamma\sim2.2, the ambient density is
n\sim0.2 cm^{-3}, and the projected size is r_{proj}\sim25 microarcsec.
Assuming no future changes in the observed evolution we predict that the radio
emission from Sw1644+57 should be detectable with the EVLA for several decades,

Clinical Characteristics of Patients with Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Harboring Somatic BAP1 Mutations
IntroductionGenomic studies of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) have recently identified frequent mutations in the BRCA-associated protein 1(BAP1) gene. In uveal melanoma and clear cell renal cell carcinoma, BAP1 mutations are associated with poor outcomes but their clinical significance in MPM is unknown. We therefore undertook this study to define the characteristics of patients whose MPM tumors harbor somatic BAP1 mutation and to examine the relationship between BAP1 mutation and survival.MethodsWe reviewed the charts of 121 patients with MPM tumors diagnosed between 1991 and 2009 tested for BAP1 mutation, and extracted the following information: age at diagnosis, sex, histology, stage, smoking status, asbestos exposure, family or personal history of malignancy, and treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation as well as survival status.ResultsTwenty-four of the 121 tumors (20%) harbored somatic BAP1 mutations. The percentage of current or former smokers among cases with BAP1 mutations was significantly higher than in BAP1 wild-type cases, (75% versus 42%; p = 0.006). However, the types of nucleotide substitutions in BAP1 did not suggest that this association was because of a causative role of smoking in BAP1 mutations. No other clinical feature was significantly different among those with and without BAP1 mutations in their MPM. There was also no difference in survival according to somatic BAP1 mutation status.ConclusionThere is no apparent distinct clinical phenotype for MPM with somatic BAP1 mutation. The significance of the more frequent history of smoking among patients with BAP1-mutated MPM warrants further study
Realistic boundary conditions for stochastic simulations of reaction-diffusion processes
Many cellular and subcellular biological processes can be described in terms
of diffusing and chemically reacting species (e.g. enzymes). Such
reaction-diffusion processes can be mathematically modelled using either
deterministic partial-differential equations or stochastic simulation
algorithms. The latter provide a more detailed and precise picture, and several
stochastic simulation algorithms have been proposed in recent years. Such
models typically give the same description of the reaction-diffusion processes
far from the boundary of the simulated domain, but the behaviour close to a
reactive boundary (e.g. a membrane with receptors) is unfortunately
model-dependent. In this paper, we study four different approaches to
stochastic modelling of reaction-diffusion problems and show the correct choice
of the boundary condition for each model. The reactive boundary is treated as
partially reflective, which means that some molecules hitting the boundary are
adsorbed (e.g. bound to the receptor) and some molecules are reflected. The
probability that the molecule is adsorbed rather than reflected depends on the
reactivity of the boundary (e.g. on the rate constant of the adsorbing chemical
reaction and on the number of available receptors), and on the stochastic model

Out-of-equilibrium states as statistical equilibria of an effective dynamics
We study the formation of coherent structures in a system with long-range
interactions where particles moving on a circle interact through a repulsive
cosine potential. Non equilibrium structures are shown to correspond to
statistical equilibria of an effective dynamics, which is derived using
averaging techniques. This simple behavior might be a prototype of others
observed in more complicated systems with long-range interactions, like
two-dimensional incompressible fluids or self-gravitating systems.Comment: 4 figure
Panchromatic Observations of SN 2011dh Point to a Compact Progenitor Star
We report the discovery and detailed monitoring of X-ray emission associated
with the Type IIb SN 2011dh using data from the Swift and Chandra satellites,
placing it among the best studied X-ray supernovae to date. We further present
millimeter and radio data obtained with the SMA, CARMA, and EVLA during the
first three weeks after explosion. Combining these observations with early
optical photometry, we show that the panchromatic dataset is well-described by
non-thermal synchrotron emission (radio/mm) with inverse Compton scattering
(X-ray) of a thermal population of optical photons. In this scenario, the shock
partition fractions deviate from equipartition by a factor, (e_e/e_B) ~ 30. We
derive the properties of the shockwave and the circumstellar environment and
find a shock velocity, v~0.1c, and a progenitor mass loss rate of ~6e-5
M_sun/yr. These properties are consistent with the sub-class of Type IIb SNe
characterized by compact progenitors (Type cIIb) and dissimilar from those with
extended progenitors (Type eIIb). Furthermore, we consider the early optical
emission in the context of a cooling envelope model to estimate a progenitor
radius of ~1e+11 cm, in line with the expectations for a Type cIIb SN.
Together, these diagnostics are difficult to reconcile with the extended radius
of the putative yellow supergiant progenitor star identified in archival HST
observations, unless the stellar density profile is unusual. Finally, we
searched for the high energy shock breakout pulse using X-ray and gamma-ray
observations obtained during the purported explosion date range. Based on the
compact radius of the progenitor, we estimate that the breakout pulse was
detectable with current instruments but likely missed due to their limited
