    Parallel hardware architectures for the cryptographic Tate pairing

    Identity-based cryptography uses pairing functions, which are sophisticated bilinear maps defined on elliptic curves. Computing pairings efficiently in software is presently a relevant research topic. Since such functions are very complex and slow in software, dedicated hard- ware (HW) implementations are worthy of being stud- ied, but presently only very preliminary research is avail- able. This work affords the problem of designing paral- lel dedicated HW architectures, i.e.,co-processors, for the Tate pairing, in the case of the Duursma-Lee algorithm in characteristic 3. Formal scheduling methodologies are applied to carry out an extensive exploration of the archi- tectural solution space, evaluating the obtained structures by means of different figures of merit such as computation time, circuit area and combinations thereof.Comparisons with the (few) existing proposals are carried out, show- ing that a large space exists for the efficient parallelHW computation of pairings

    Affective Contagion: How Attitudes Expressed by Others Influence Our Perception of Actions

    Vitality forms represent a fundamental aspect of social interactions by characterizing how actions are performed and how words are pronounced on the basis of the attitude of the agent. Same action, such as a handshake, may have a different impact on the receiver when it is performed kindly or vigorously, and similarly, a gentle or rude tone of voice may have a different impact on the listener. In the present study, we carried out two experiments that aimed to investigate whether and how vocal requests conveying different vitality forms can influence the perception of goal-directed actions and to measure the duration of this effect over time. More specifically, participants were asked to listen to the voice of an actor pronouncing “give me” in a rude or gentle way. Then, they were asked to observe the initial part of a rude or a gentle passing action, continue it mentally, and estimate the time of its completion. Results showed that the perception of different vitality forms expressed by vocal requests influenced the estimation of action duration. Moreover, we found that this effect was limited to a certain time interval (800 ms), after which it started to decay

    The status of the R&D on the Cylindrical-GEM (CGEM) detector foreseen as Inner Tracker for KLOE-2, the upgrade of the KLOE experiment at the DAFNE phi-factory, will be presented. The R&D includes several activities: i) the construction and complete characterization of the full-size CGEM prototype, equipped with 650 microns pitch 1-D longitudinal strips; ii) the study of the 2-D readout with XV patterned strips and operation in magnetic field (up to 1.5T), performed with small planar prototypes in a dedicated test at the H4-SPS beam facility; iii) the characterization of the single-mask GEM technology for the realization of large-area GEM foils.Comment: 4 pages, 10 figures, Presented at Vienna Conference on Instrumentation (Feb 15-20, 2010, Vienna, Austria).     In Vitro Evaluation of an Active Heat-and-Moisture Exchanger: The Hygrovent Gold

    BACKGROUND: To improve the heat and humidification that can be achieved with aheat-and-moisture exchanger (HME),a hybrid active (ie,adds heat and water) HME,the Hygrovent Gold,was developed. We evaluated in vitro the performance of theHygrovent Gold. METHODS: We tested the Hygrovent Gold (with and without its supplemental heat andmoisture options activated),the Hygrobac,and the Hygrovent S. We measured theabsolute humidity,using a test lung ventilated at minute volumes of 5,10,and15 L/min,in normothermic (expired temperature 34 degrees C) and hypothermic(expired temperature 28 degrees C) conditions. We also measured the HMEs' flowresistance and weight after 24 h and 48 h. RESULTS: In its active mode the Hygrovent Gold provided the highest absolutehumidity,independent of minute volume,in both normothermia and hypothermia. Therespective normothermia and hypothermia absolute humidity values at 10 L/min were36.3 + 1.3 mg/L and 27.1 + 1.0 mg/L with the active Hygrovent Gold,33.9 + 0.5mg/L and 24.2 + 0.8 mg/L with the passive Hygrovent Gold,33.8 + 0.56 mg/L and24.4 + 0.4 mg/L with the Hygrobac,and 33.9 + 0.8 mg/L and 24.6 + 0.6 mg/L withthe Hygrovent S. The efficiency of the tested HMEs did not change over time. At24 h and 48 h the increase in weight and flow resistance was highest in theactive Hygrovent Gold. CONCLUSIONS: The passive Hygrovent Gold provided adequate heat and moisture innormothermia,but the active Hygrovent Gold provided the highest humidity,inboth normothermia and hypothermia

    Evaluation of quality of drinking water from Baghdad, Iraq

    This is a joint work between the Italian Red Cross and the Environmental Laboratories, Baghdad. The drinking water (DW) samples from 16 residential districts in Baghdad were chemically evaluated with reference to the raw water samples and water directly taken from the purification plants. In addition to the routinely measured parameters, 17 metals and 11 trihalomathane (THM) were measured. Generally, the samples of water analysed can be considered of good quality. The relatively high sulphate and aluminium contents results from the use of aluminium sulphate as flocculent. The ammonia and Nitrite concentrations were lower than the detectable limit, because ammonia is converted into chloramines and nitrite is converted into Nitrate during chlorination. This indicates no sewage contamination of the drinking water. The high chloride contents can be referred to the use of partially degraded hypo for the disinfection. The presence of THM's in the samples analysed is indicative of good disinfection process. The presence of these compounds is preferred better than bacterial contamination. The relatively high levels of zinc and iron have no impact on the quality of DW. Iron, however, was efficiently removed during the treatment, together with Manganese. Reference was done to the EU specification of drinking water regarding total hardness, chloride contents, sulphate, iron and THM's. As for the iron content, the original pH of the river water (7.5 and 8.0) ensures that Iron should not be present in soluble form at a detectable level. Corrosion of the pipes could be one of the reasons for the presence of iron. Key Words: Drinking water quality, heavy metals, sulphate, Aluminium, Trihalomethans, hardness

    Mechanical ventilation in patients with acute ischaemic stroke: From pathophysiology to clinical practice

    Most patients with ischaemic stroke are managed on the ward or in specialty stroke units, but a significant number requires higher-acuity care and, consequently, admission to the intensive care unit. Mechanical ventilation is frequently performed in these patients due to swallowing dysfunction and airway or respiratory system compromise. Experimental studies have focused on stroke-induced immunosuppression and brain-lung crosstalk, leading to increased pulmonary damage and inflammation, as well as reduced alveolar macrophage phagocytic capability, which may increase the risk of infection. Pulmonary complications, such as respiratory failure, pneumonia, pleural effusions, acute respiratory distress syndrome, lung oedema, and pulmonary embolism from venous thromboembolism, are common and found to be among the major causes of death in this group of patients. Furthermore, over the past two decades, tracheostomy use has increased among stroke patients, who can have unique indications for this procedure - depending on the location and type of stroke - when compared to the general population. However, the optimal mechanical ventilator strategy remains unclear in this population. Although a high tidal volume (V T) strategy has been used for many years, the latest evidence suggests that a protective ventilatory strategy (V T = 6-8 mL/kg predicted body weight, positive end-expiratory pressure and rescue recruitment manoeuvres) may also have a role in brain-damaged patients, including those with stroke. The aim of this narrative review is to explore the pathophysiology of brain-lung interactions after acute ischaemic stroke and the management of mechanical ventilation in these patients
