    The first joint ESGAR/ ESPR consensus statement on the technical performance of cross-sectional small bowel and colonic imaging

    Objectives: To develop guidelines describing a standardised approach to patient preparation and acquisition protocols for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound (US) of the small bowel and colon, with an emphasis on imaging inflammatory bowel disease. Methods: An expert consensus committee of 13 members from the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR) and European Society of Paediatric Radiology (ESPR) undertook a six-stage modified Delphi process, including a detailed literature review, to create a series of consensus statements concerning patient preparation, imaging hardware and image acquisition protocols. Results: One hundred and fifty-seven statements were scored for agreement by the panel of which 129 statements (82 %) achieved immediate consensus with a further 19 (12 %) achieving consensus after appropriate modification. Nine (6 %) statements were rejected as consensus could not be reached. Conclusions: These expert consensus recommendations can be used to help guide cross-sectional radiological practice for imaging the small bowel and colon.     Understanding and Challenging Populist Negativity towards Politics: The Perspectives of British Citizens

    This article adapts and develops the idea of a cynical or ‘stealth’ understanding of politics to explore how citizens’ estrangement from formal politics is processed cognitively through a populist lens. Earlier work has shown the widespread presence of stealth attitudes in the United States and Finland. We show that stealth attitudes are also well established in Britain, demonstrate their populist character and reveal that age, newspaper readership and concerns about governing practices help predict their adoption by individuals. Yet our survey findings also reveal a larger body of positive attitudes towards the practice of democracy suggesting that there is scope for challenging populist cynicism. We explore these so-called ‘sunshine’ attitudes and connect them to the reform options favoured by British citizens. If we are to challenge populist negativity towards politics, we conclude that improving the operation of representative politics is more important than offering citizens new forms of more deliberative participation

    On Dispersive and Classical Shock Waves in Bose-Einstein Condensates and Gas Dynamics

    A Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is a quantum fluid that gives rise to interesting shock wave nonlinear dynamics. Experiments depict a BEC that exhibits behavior similar to that of a shock wave in a compressible gas, eg. traveling fronts with steep gradients. However, the governing Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation that describes the mean field of a BEC admits no dissipation hence classical dissipative shock solutions do not explain the phenomena. Instead, wave dynamics with small dispersion is considered and it is shown that this provides a mechanism for the generation of a dispersive shock wave (DSW). Computations with the GP equation are compared to experiment with excellent agreement. A comparison between a canonical 1D dissipative and dispersive shock problem shows significant differences in shock structure and shock front speed. Numerical results associated with the three dimensional experiment show that three and two dimensional approximations are in excellent agreement and one dimensional approximations are in good qualitative agreement. Using one dimensional DSW theory it is argued that the experimentally observed blast waves may be viewed as dispersive shock waves.Comment: 24 pages, 28 figures, submitted to Phys Rev

    The arrival of New Labour into Government witnessed the prominent re-emergence of place onto the policy agenda. This heralded a range of area-based-initiatives designed to both tackle neighbourhood forms of deprivation and to re-establish a sense of identity and connection between individuals and their local community. In terms of place-making, effective and inclusive participation, representation and leadership were all identified as prerequisites for the creation of sustainable communities . But how important is local leadership and strategic vision within local public service organisations in achieving the desired place-making outcomes? This paper examines the extent to which local leadership and strategic vision represents a significant factor in promoting higher levels of satisfaction, belonging, cohesion and participation across single tier councils in England. The ensuing empirical evidence raises significant questions not only about the importance of local leadership in place-making, but also the environmental and organizational factors that shape local places

    Nonlinear Dynamics of Moving Curves and Surfaces: Applications to Physical Systems

    The subject of moving curves (and surfaces) in three dimensional space (3-D) is a fascinating topic not only because it represents typical nonlinear dynamical systems in classical mechanics, but also finds important applications in a variety of physical problems in different disciplines. Making use of the underlying geometry, one can very often relate the associated evolution equations to many interesting nonlinear evolution equations, including soliton possessing nonlinear dynamical systems. Typical examples include dynamics of filament vortices in ordinary and superfluids, spin systems, phases in classical optics, various systems encountered in physics of soft matter, etc. Such interrelations between geometric evolution and physical systems have yielded considerable insight into the underlying dynamics. We present a succinct tutorial analysis of these developments in this article, and indicate further directions. We also point out how evolution equations for moving surfaces are often intimately related to soliton equations in higher dimensions.Comment: Review article, 38 pages, 7 figs. To appear in Int.     Cajoling or coercing: would electoral engineering resolve the young citizen–state disconnect?

    The relationships between citizens and their states are undergoing significant stresses across advanced liberal democracies. In Britain, this disconnect is particularly evident amongst young citizens. This article considers whether different electoral engineering methods - designed either to cajole or compel youth to vote - might arrest the decline in their political engagement. Data collected in 2011 from a national survey of 1,025 British 18 year olds and from focus groups involving 86 young people, reveal that many young people claim that they would be more likely to vote in future elections if such electoral reforms were implemented. However, it is questionable whether or not such increased electoral participation would mean that they would feel truly connected to the democratic process. In particular, forcing young people to vote through the introduction of compulsory voting may actually serve to reinforce deepening resentments, rather than engage them in a positive manner

    Reversal of the Charge Transfer between Host and Dopant Atoms in Semiconductor Nanocrystals

    We present ab initio density functional calculations that show P (Al) dopant atoms in small hydrogen-terminated Si crystals to be negatively (positively) charged. These signs of the dopant charges are reversed relative to the same dopants in bulk Si. We predict this novel reversal of the dopant charge (and electronic character of the doping) to occur at crystal sizes of order 100 Si atoms. We explain it as a result of competition between fundamental principles governing charge transfer in bulk semiconductors and molecules and predict it to occur in nanocrystals of most semiconductors.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures (3 in color), 2 table

    Magnetic relaxation in the Bianchi-I universe

    Extended Einstein-Maxwell model and its application to the problem of evolution of magnetized Bianchi-I Universe are considered. The evolution of medium magnetization is governed by a relaxation type extended constitutive equation. The series of exact solutions to the extended master equations is obtained and discussed. The anisotropic expansion of the Bianchi-I Universe is shown to become non-monotonic (accelerated/decelerated) in both principal directions (along the magnetic field and orthogonal to it). A specific type of expansion, the so-called evolution with hidden magnetic field, is shown to appear when the magnetization effectively screens the magnetic field and the latter disappears from the equations for gravitational field.Comment: 32 page
