Asymmetric exclusion processes with constrained dynamics
Asymmetric exclusion processes with locally reversible kinetic constraints
are introduced to investigate the effect of non-conservative driving forces in
athermal systems. At high density they generally exhibit rheological-like
behavior, negative differential resistance, two-step structural relaxation,
dynamical heterogeneity and, possibly, a jamming transition driven by the

Modeling a high mass turn down in the stellar initial mass function
Statistical sampling from the stellar initial mass function (IMF) for all
star-forming regions in the Galaxy would lead to the prediction of ~1000 Msun
stars unless there is a rapid turn-down in the IMF beyond several hundred solar
masses. Such a turndown is not necessary for dense clusters because the number
of stars sampled is always too small. Here we explore several mechanisms for an
upper mass cutoff, including an exponential decline of the star formation
probability after a turbulent crossing time. The results are in good agreement
with the observed IMF over the entire stellar mass range, and they give a
gradual turn down compared to the Salpeter function above ~100 Msun for normal
thermal Jeans mass, M_J. The upper mass turn down should scale with M_J in
different environments. A problem with the models is that they cannot give both
the observed power-law IMF out to the high-mass sampling limit in dense
clusters, as well as the observed lack of supermassive stars in whole galaxy
disks. Either there is a sharper upper-mass cutoff in the IMF, perhaps from
self-limitation, or the IMF is different for dense clusters than for the
majority of star formation that occurs at lower density. Dense clusters seem to

Research of metal solidification in zero-g state
An experiment test apparatus that allows metal melting and resolidification in the three seconds available during free fall in a drop tower was built and tested in the tower. Droplets (approximately 0.05 cm) of pure nickel and 1090 steel were prepared in this fashion. The apparatus, including instrumentation, is described. As part of the instrumentation, a method for measuring temperature-time histories of the free floating metal droplets was developed. Finally, a metallurgical analysis of the specimens prepared in the apparatus is presented

Pionic Color Transparency
We use a semi-classical approximation to investigate the effects of color
transparency on pion electroproduction reactions. The resulting reduced nuclear
interactions produce significant, but not dominating, differences with the
results of conventional distorted-wave, Glauber-type treatments at kinematics
accessible to Jefferson Laboratory. Nuclear effects that could mimic the

The LISA Gravitational Wave Foreground: A Study of Double White Dwarfs
Double white dwarfs are expected to be a source of confusion-limited noise
for the future gravitational wave observatory LISA. In a specific frequency
range, this 'foreground noise' is predicted to rise above the instrumental
noise and hinder the detection of other types of signals, e.g., gravitational
waves arising from stellar mass objects inspiraling into massive black holes.
In many previous studies only detached populations of compact object binaries
have been considered in estimating the LISA gravitational wave foreground
signal. Here, we investigate the influence of compact object detached and
Roche-Lobe Overflow Galactic binaries on the shape and strength of the LISA
signal. Since >99% of remnant binaries which have orbital periods within the
LISA sensitivity range are white dwarf binaries, we consider only these
binaries when calculating the LISA signal. We find that the contribution of
RLOF binaries to the foreground noise is negligible at low frequencies, but
becomes significant at higher frequencies, pushing the frequency at which the
foreground noise drops below the instrumental noise to >6 mHz. We find that it
is important to consider the population of mass transferring binaries in order
to obtain an accurate assessment of the foreground noise on the LISA data
stream. However, we estimate that there still exists a sizeable number (~11300)
of Galactic double white dwarf binaries which will have a signal-to-noise ratio
>5, and thus will be potentially resolvable with LISA. We present the LISA
gravitational wave signal from the Galactic population of white dwarf binaries,
show the most important formation channels contributing to the LISA disc and

Wind tunnel investigation of an all flush orifice air data system for a large subsonic aircraft
The results of a wind tunnel investigation on an all flush orifice air data system for use on a KC-135A aircraft are presented. The investigation was performed to determine the applicability of fixed all flush orifice air data systems that use only aircraft surfaces for orifices on the nose of the model (in a configuration similar to that of the shuttle entry air data system) provided the measurements required for the determination of stagnation pressure, angle of attack, and angle of sideslip. For the measurement of static pressure, additional flush orifices in positions on the sides of the fuselage corresponding to those in a standard pitot-static system were required. An acceptable but less accurate system, consisting of orifices only on the nose of the model, is defined and discussed
Feasibility analysis of reciprocating magnetic heat pumps
The conceptual design selected for detailed system analysis and optimization is the reciprocating gadolinium core in a regenerative fluid column within the bore of a superconducting magnet. The thermodynamic properties of gadolinium are given. A computerized literature search for relevant papers was conducted and is being analyzed. Contact was made with suppliers of superconducting magnets and accessories, magnetic materials, and various types of hardware.
