    A certified strategy for determining sharp intervals of enclosure for the eigenvalues of matrix differential operators with singular coefficients is examined. The strategy relies on computing the second order spectrum relative to subspaces of continuous piecewise linear functions. For smooth perturbations of the angular Kerr-Newman Dirac operator, explicit rates of convergence due to regularity of the eigenfunctions are established.     Non-abelian D=11 Supermembrane

    We obtain a U(M) action for supermembranes with central charges in the Light Cone Gauge (LCG). The theory realizes all of the symmetries and constraints of the supermembrane together with the invariance under a U(M) gauge group with M arbitrary. The worldvolume action has (LCG) N=8 supersymmetry and it corresponds to M parallel supermembranes minimally immersed on the target M9xT2 (MIM2). In order to ensure the invariance under the symmetries and to close the corresponding algebra, a star-product determined by the central charge condition is introduced. It is constructed with a nonconstant symplectic two-form where curvature terms are also present. The theory is in the strongly coupled gauge-gravity regime.     Extraction efficiency of drifting electrons in a two-phase xenon time projection chamber

    We present a measurement of the extraction efficiency of quasi-free electrons from the liquid into the gas phase in a two-phase xenon time-projection chamber. The measurements span a range of electric fields from 2.4 to 7.1 kV/cm in the liquid xenon, corresponding to 4.5 to 13.1 kV/cm in the gaseous xenon. Extraction efficiency continues to increase at the highest extraction fields, implying that additional charge signal may be attained in two-phase xenon detectors through careful high-voltage engineering of the gate-anode region

    On Approximation of the Eigenvalues of Perturbed Periodic Schrodinger Operators

    This paper addresses the problem of computing the eigenvalues lying in the gaps of the essential spectrum of a periodic Schrodinger operator perturbed by a fast decreasing potential. We use a recently developed technique, the so called quadratic projection method, in order to achieve convergence free from spectral pollution.     Calibration of a two-phase xenon time projection chamber with a 37^{37}Ar source

    We calibrate a two-phase xenon detector at 0.27 keV in the charge channel and at 2.8 keV in both the light and charge channels using a 37^{37}Ar source that is directly released into the detector. We map the light and charge yields as a function of electric drift field. For the 2.8 keV peak, we calculate the Thomas-Imel box parameter for recombination and determine its dependence on drift field. For the same peak, we achieve an energy resolution, Eσ/EmeanE_{\sigma}/E_{mean}, between 9.8% and 10.8% for 0.1 kV/cm to 2 kV/cm electric drift fields.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

    The information needs of partners and family members of cancer patients: a systematic literature review

    Objective: This review examined the extent to which the information needs of partners and family members of cancer patients has been addressed in the literature. Methods: We conducted a systematic search of four databases for papers published between 1998 and 2008 which assessed the information needs of partners and/or family members of adult cancer patients. Results: Thirty-two papers were included in the review. Eleven categories of information need were identified. There was a predominant focus on breast or prostate cancer, leaving a knowledge gap in relation to other cancers. Few papers moved beyond the diagnosis and initial treatment phase, and most did not distinguish between met and unmet needs. Those that did, indicated that partners/family members are more likely to have unmet needs for information about supportive care than for medical information. The concept of ‘information need’ was generally poorly developed and theorised in the papers. Conclusion: Establishing the information needs of partners and family members of cancer patients is an important, but as yet neglected, area of research. In order to develop our understanding of this area more empirical research, with sound conceptual and theoretical foundations is required

    Patients’ experience with cancer recurrence: A meta-ethnography

    Objective Recurrence is a difficult stage in the cancer journey as it brings to the fore the life-threatening nature of the illness. This meta-ethnography examines and synthesises the findings of qualitative research regarding patients' experience of cancer recurrence. Methods A systematic search of the qualitative studies published between January 1994 to April 2014 was undertaken. Seventeen relevant papers were identified, and a meta-ethnography was conducted. Results Six third-order concepts were developed to capture patients' experiences: experiencing emotional turmoil following diagnosis, which described the emotional impact of diagnosis and the influence of previous experiences on how the news were received; experiencing otherness, encompassing changed relationships; seeking support in the health care system, describing the extent of information needs and the importance of the relationship with health care professionals; adjusting to a new prognosis and uncertain future, highlighting the changes associated with uncertainty; finding strategies to deal with recurrence, describing ways of maintaining emotional well-being and regaining a sense of control over cancer; and facing mortality, describing the difficulties in facing death-related concerns and associated consequences. Conclusions This meta-ethnography clarifies the fundamental aspects of patients' experience of recurrence. It suggests that health care professionals can promote a positive experience of care and help lessen the psychosocial impact of recurrence by providing information in an approachable way and being sensitive to their changing needs. It also points to the importance of supporting patients in adopting strategies to regain a sense of control and to address their potential mortality and its impact on loved ones

    Cascading the use of Web 2.0 technology in secondary schools in the United Kingdom: identifying the barriers beyond pre-service training

    This paper reports on research that took place at Nottingham Trent University and Sheffield Hallam University, United Kingdom, over two years. The research focuses on the use of Web 2.0 technology, specifically web logs, with pre-service teachers, both during their university programme and the first year of teaching as full-time newly qualified teachers (NQTs). The purpose of this research was to add a developing body of knowledge by identifying whether technology used by pre-service teachers during their training course can be cascaded into their practice once qualified. Key findings identify a number of enablers and barriers to cascading technology in the classroom; these include curriculum time, pupil skills and support. The research concludes that early professional support and development should be on-going and assumptions about new teachers as champions of cascading innovative use of Web 2 technologies into their practice as NQTs may be over optimisti

    On Non Commutative G2 structure

    Using an algebraic orbifold method, we present non-commutative aspects of G2G_2 structure of seven dimensional real manifolds. We first develop and solve the non commutativity parameter constraint equations defining G2G_2 manifold algebras. We show that there are eight possible solutions for this extended structure, one of which corresponds to the commutative case. Then we obtain a matrix representation solving such algebras using combinatorial arguments. An application to matrix model of M-theory is discussed.Comment: 16 pages, Latex.     The effects of climatic fluctuations and extreme events on running water ecosystems

    Most research on the effects of environmental change in freshwaters has focused on incremental changes in average conditions, rather than fluctuations or extreme events such as heatwaves, cold snaps, droughts, floods or wildfires, which may have even more profound consequences. Such events are commonly predicted to increase in frequency, intensity and duration with global climate change, with many systems being exposed to conditions with no recent historical precedent. We propose a mechanistic framework for predicting potential impacts of environmental fluctuations on running water ecosystems by scaling up effects of fluctuations from individuals to entire ecosystems. This framework requires integration of four key components: effects of the environment on individual metabolism, metabolic and biomechanical constraints on fluctuating species interactions, assembly dynamics of local food webs and mapping the dynamics of the meta-community onto ecosystem function. We illustrate the framework by developing a mathematical model of environmental fluctuations on dynamically assembling food webs. We highlight (currently limited) empirical evidence for emerging insights and theoretical predictions. For example, widely supported predictions about the effects of environmental fluctuations are: high vulnerability of species with high per capita metabolic demands such as large-bodied ones at the top of food webs; simplification of food web network structure and impaired energetic transfer efficiency; reduced resilience and top-down relative to bottom-up regulation of food web and ecosystem processes. We conclude by identifying key questions and challenges that need to be addressed to develop more accurate and predictive bio-assessments of the effects of fluctuations, and implications of fluctuations for management practices in an increasingly uncertain world
