The Demand for Directors' and Officers' Insurance in Canada

This paper looks at the insurance demand of a firm's directors and officers using a sample of Canadian corporations (excluding firms from the Financial services and Mining sectors) from 1993-1999. More to the point, we study the demand for director's and officer's insurance. Our results suggest that larger corporation are more likely to purchase D&O insurance. Firms that are strong financially are less likely to purchase D&O insurance. Firms are also less likely to purchase D&O insurance when there are many outsiders on the board of directors and when the board member have an important financial stake in the corporation. Surprisingly, being listed on a stock exchange in the United States does not seem to have an impact on the demand for D&O insurance, contrary to previous results.

Nuclear Cosmic Rays propagation in the Atmosphere

The transport of the nuclear cosmic ray flux in the atmosphere is studied and the atmospheric corrections to be applied to the measurements are calculated. The contribution of the calculated corrections to the accuracy of the experimental results are discussed and evaluated over the kinetic energy range 10-103^{3} GeV/n. The Boron (B) and Carbon (C) elements system is used as a test case. It is shown that the required corrections become largely dominant at the highest energies investigated. The results are discussed.Comment: Proc. of 30th International Cosmic Ray Conference, Merida, Mexico; 4 page

Precise simulation of secondary particle production and propagation in the atmosphere

    No full text
Precise simulation of secondary particle production and propagation in the atmosphere is a very important issue for the atmospheric neutrino oscillation studies. To this purpose a full 3-Dimensions Monte-Carlo simulation of particle transport in the atmosphere is used to compute the flux of protons, muons and neutrinos. Recent balloon borne experiments performed a set of accurate measurement of different particle flux at different altitudes in the atmosphere. This set of data can be used to test and improve the calculations for the atmospheric neutrino production. The simulation results will be reported and compared with the latest flux measurements. In the oral presentation and in the updated version of the proceedings it will be shown that the level of precision reached by these experiments could be used to constrain the nuclear models used in the simulation. The implication of these results for the atmospheric neutrino flux calculation will also be presented and discussed

Origin of light nuclei in near earth orbit

The possible sources of light nuclei populations observed recently below the geomagnetic cutoff by the AMS experiment are discussed in terms of nuclear processes: fragmentation of the incoming flux of cosmic helium on atmospheric nuclei, and nuclear coalescence from proton and helium induced reactions. Results of simulations for deuterium, tritium, helium 3 and 4, are presented.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

Secondary antiproton flux induced by cosmic ray interactions with the atmosphere

The atmospheric secondary antiproton flux is studied for detection altitudes extending from sea level up to about 3 earth radii, by means of a 3-dimensional Monte-Carlo simulation, successfully applied previously on other satellite and balloon data. The calculated antiproton flux at mountain altitude is found in fair agreement with the recent BESS measurements. The flux at balloon altitude is also in agreement with calculations performed in previous studies and used for the analysis of balloon data. The flux at sea level is found to be significant. The antineutron flux is also evaluated. The antiproton flux is prospectively explored at large distance from earth up to around 2 104^4 km. The results are discussed in the context of the forthcoming measurements by large acceptance experiments.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, submitted to Phys. Rev.

Cortical thickness of the insula and prefrontal cortex relates to externalizing behavior: Cross-sectional and prospective findings

    Get PDF
Externalizing behaviors (EBs) pertain to a diverse set of aggressive, antisocial, and potentially destructive behaviors directed toward the external environment. They range from nonclinical to clinical in severity, associated with opposition, aggression, hyperactivity, or impulsivity, and are considered a risk factor for the emergence of psychopathology later in adulthood. Focusing on community adolescents (N = 102; 49 female and 53 male adolescents; age range 12-19 years), this study aimed to explore the relations between EBs and the cortical thickness of regions of interest as well as to identify possible risk markers that could improve understanding of the EB construct. Using a mixed cross-sectional and prospective design (1-year follow-up), we report specific associations with cortical thickness of the left insular, right orbitofrontal, and left anterior cingulate cortex. Specifically, thinner left insular and right orbitofrontal cortex was associated with higher EBs, and thinner left anterior cingulate cortex predicted less reduction in EBs 1 year later. In addition, further examination of the aggression and rule-breaking subscales of the Youth/Adult Self-Report, used to assess EBs, revealed specific associations with insular subregions. Findings suggest that cortical structure morphology may significantly relate to the expression and maintenance of EBs within the general population of adolescents
