    Choreo-graphic Figures: Deviations from the Line (2014–2017) is an interdisciplinary research project involving artist Nikolaus Gansterer, choreographer Mariella Greil and writer-artist Emma Cocker (working in dialogue with Alex Arteaga, Christine de Smedt and Lilia Mestre). The project unfolds through two interconnected aims: to explore the nature of 'thinking-feeling-knowing' operative within artistic practice, and to develop systems of notation for reflecting on this often hidden or undisclosed aspect of the creative process. We ask: What systems of notation can we develop for articulating the barely perceptible micro-movements and transitions at the cusp of awareness within the process of artistic "sense-making"? How might we communicate the instability and mutability of the flows and forces within practice, without fixing that which is contingent as a literal sign? Drawing on findings from the first year of the research project Choreo-graphic Figures: Deviations from the Line (including field-work undertaken during a month-long research residency within ImPulsTanz [Vienna, 2014] and a one-week residency-workshop working with researchers at a.pass [Centre of Advanced Performance & Scenography Studies, Brussels, 2015]), we consider notation (and its related technologies) through a diagramming of the multiple, at times competing, forces and energies operative as drawing, writing and choreography enter into dialogue through shared live artistic exploration.     The use of seismic methods for the detection of dykes

    Seismic methods have become common for the detection of low-throw faults ahead of underground coal mining. Surface seismic methods cannot theoretically be used where dykes occur, because seismic waves transmit from the surface down to the seams, and reflect back to the surface. Consequently, where sub-vertical structure such as dykes occurs, the surface seismic method fails. The ability of seismic methods to image dykes depends on the geometry used, the dyke thickness and the seismic wave propagation mode in relation to dyke composition and internal structure. Surface seismic methods find it difficult to distinguish between faults/fractures and very thin dykes (1-2m in thickness) when the dyke\u27s thickness is less than the seismic wavelength. Consequently, borehole seismic methods have to be used to detect the presence of such thin dykes. This paper presents the first results from an ACARP project, which in part is a breakthrough in seismic technology for the detection of dykes. It explains how surface seismic methods were used to detect a thick dyke and associated faulting. An alternative approach, that of going downhole with seismic sources and receivers (borehole seismic profiling), shows that dyke sides can be imaged at depth, and that in future, it should be possible to produce an image of both sides of a dyke, in its correct orientation, using existing boreholes

    Application of bag sampling technique for particle size distribution measurements

    Bag sampling techniques can be used to temporarily store an aerosol and therefore provide sufficient time to utilize sensitive but slow instrumental techniques for recording detailed particle size distributions. Laboratory based assessment of the method were conducted to examine size dependant deposition loss coefficients for aerosols held in VelostatTM bags conforming to a horizontal cylindrical geometry. Deposition losses of NaCl particles in the range of 10 nm to 160 nm were analysed in relation to the bag size, storage time, and sampling flow rate. Results of this study suggest that the bag sampling method is most useful for moderately short sampling periods of about 5 minutes

    What do pedometer counts represent? A comparison between pedometer data and data from four different questionnaires

    OBJECTIVES: To compare physical activity (PA) reported through pedometer registrations (step counts) with PA reported in four different questionnaires; to compare step count thresholds (7,500, 10,000 and 12,500 steps/d) with the PA guideline of 30 min of moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) per day. SUBJECTS: A sample of 310 healthy adults, mean age 38.7 (sd 11.9) years, volunteered to participate. Forty-seven per cent was male and 93 % of the sample was employed. METHODS: PA was assessed by interview (Minnesota Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (MLTPAQ)), three self-administered questionnaires (long version and short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (long-form IPAQ, short-form IPAQ), Baecke questionnaire) and seven consecutive days of pedometer registration. RESULTS: Step counts correlated positively with questionnaire-based PA. The strongest correlations were found between step counts and total PA reported in the long-form IPAQ (rs = 0.37), moderate PA reported in the short-form IPAQ (rs = 0.33), total and moderate PA reported in the MLTPAQ (rs = 0.32), and the total and leisure-time PA indices (excluding sport) reported in the Baecke questionnaire (rs = 0.44). According to step counts, 22.6 % of the participants were somewhat active, 18.7 % active and 39.4 % highly active. As assessed by the long-form IPAQ, short-form IPAQ and MLTPAQ, the guideline of 30 min MVPA/d was reached by respectively 85.4 %, 84.8 % and 68.0 % of participants. CONCLUSION: Pedometer-based data offer adequate information to discriminate between levels of PA. Caution is needed when comparing active samples based on different PA recommendations

    Degree of Integrated Water Resources Management Implementation in Context of Climate Change in a Watershed: Case of Oueme Basin, Benin (West Africa)

    This study is based on the hypothesis that the implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) tools in the Oueme watershed has not led to a systematic improvement in the degree of IWRM implementation in the Oueme Valley in Benin. Methodologically, data were collected through a semi-structured survey of stakeholder families in the study area using snowball sampling. The tool used was the form developed by the United Nations to collect data to assess the level of IWRM implementation. The four (4) assessment criteria, each covering a key component of IWRM, are the enabling environment, institutions and participation, management tools and financing. The results obtained per criteria according to the stepwise methodology adopted reveal on average a degree of implementation of 40 on a scale of 0 to 100 in the Oueme basin. This value varies according to the geographical area and the factors considered. This study, which is a decision-making tool, provides a guide for governments to monitor the progress of integrated water resources management in their territory
