    The Impact of a Technology-Based Intervention on Phonemic Awareness Skills In First Graders

    This action research study aimed to determine the impact of the use of a technology-based intervention, specifically with the use of an iPad application, on students\u27 phonemic awareness skills. The intervention took place over six weeks using the Teach Your Monster to Read iPad application to practice skills. Sixteen first-grade students from a rural elementary school were the subjects of this study. Half the participants played the game twice weekly for 15-20 minutes for six weeks. Data was collected before, after, and during the intervention using multiple summative assessments and weekly progress monitoring. The data analysis suggests that there isn’t enough data to conclude whether or not the iPad application was the main reason scores increased. Further research over a more extended amount of time is needed to determine the effectiveness of the Teach Your Monster to Read application on students’ phonemic awareness skills

    A third-generation, fast, low cost, multispectral recognition system (MIDAS) able to keep pace with the large quantity and high rates of data acquisition from large regions with present and projected sensots is described. The program can process a complete ERTS frame in forty seconds and provide a color map of sixteen constituent categories in a few minutes. A principle objective of the MIDAS program is to provide a system well interfaced with the human operator and thus to obtain large overall reductions in turn-around time and significant gains in throughput. The hardware and software generated in the overall program is described. The system contains a midi-computer to control the various high speed processing elements in the data path, a preprocessor to condition data, and a classifier which implements an all digital prototype multivariate Gaussian maximum likelihood or a Bayesian decision algorithm. Sufficient software was developed to perform signature extraction, control the preprocessor, compute classifier coefficients, control the classifier operation, operate the color display and printer, and diagnose operation

    Invaluable Involvement: Purposive Interest Group Networks in the 21st Century

    We present the first social network analysis of purposive and coordinated interest group relationships. We utilize a network measure based on cosigner status to United States Supreme Court amicus curiae, or friend of the court briefs. The illuminated structures lend insight into the central players and overall formation of the network over the first seven years of the 21st century. We find that the majority of interest groups primarily partake in coalition strategies with other groups of similar policy interest and ideological character. This is in contrast to previous literature that focused only on one or the other. The factions are tied together by various central players, who act as hubs, leaving a disparate collection of organizations that work alone. Network analysis provides evidence, for example, that the National Wildlife Foundation, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the American Civil Liberties Union are all particularly strong groups, but exploit different central roles. Ultimately, our work and data suggest several subsequent questions and opportunities pertaining to the coalition strategies of interest groups

    While interest groups use a variety of techniques to exert influence, coalition strategies are the dominant lobbying technique. However, many questions remain about such coalitions. This paper is the second in a series of social network analyses of purposive and coordinated interest group relationships. We utilize a network measure based on cosigner status to United States Supreme Court amicus curiae, or friend of the court briefs. The illuminated structures lend insight into the central players and overall formation of the network over the first several years of the 21st century. The factions are tied together by various central players, who act as hubs, leaving a disparate collection of organizations that work alone. Using an exponential-family random graph model (ERGM), we find that graph-theorectic and organizational characteristics, such as size and budget, as well as policy interests explain interest group network formation

    Ice Layer Spreading along a Solid Substrate during Solidification of Supercooled Water: Experiments and Modeling

    The thermal influence of a solid wall on the solidification of a sessile supercooled water drop is experimentally investigated. The velocity of the initial ice layer propagating along the solid substrate prior to dendritic solidification is determined from videos captured using a high-speed video system. Experiments are performed for varying substrate materials and liquid supercooling. In contrast to recent studies at moderate supercooling, in the case of metallic substrates only a weak influence of the substrate’s thermal properties on the ice layer velocity is observed. Using the analytical solution of the two-phase Stefan problem, a semiempirical model for the ice layer velocity is developed. The experimental data are well described for all supercooling levels in the entire diffusion limited solidification regime. For higher supercooling, the model overestimates the freezing velocity due to kinetic effects during molecular attachment at the solid–liquid interface, which are not accounted for in the model. The experimental findings of the present work offer a new perspective on the design of anti-icing systems

    I derive the expressions for the CP-violating asymmetry arising from interference between mixed and direct decays in the Upsilon(4S) system, for the case in which only one of the B decay times is observed, integrating over the decay time of the other B. I observe that neither the difference of the decay times Delta t, nor even their time-ordering, need be detected. A technique for measurement of the CP-violating weak decay parameter sin(2beta) is described which exploits this observation.Comment: 9 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN
