    Thematic mapper research in the earth sciences: Small scale patches of suspended matter and phytoplankton in the Elbe River Estuary, German Bight and Tidal Flats

    A Thematic Mapper (TM) field experiment was followed by a data analysis to determine TM capabilities for analysis of suspended matter and phytoplankton. Factor analysis showed that suspended matter concentration, atmospheric scattering, and sea surface temperature can be retrieved as independent factors which determine the variation in the TM data over water areas. Spectral channels in the near infrared open the possibility of determining the Angstrom exponent better than for the coastal zone color scanner. The suspended matter distribution may then be calculated by the absolute radiance of channel 2 or 3 or the ratio of both. There is no indication of whether separation of chlorophyll is possible. The distribution of suspended matter and sea surface temperature can be observed with the expected fine structure. A good correlation between water depth and suspended matter distribution as found from ship data can now be analyzed for an entire area by the synoptic view of the TM scenes

    The author has identified the following significant results. Due to the receipt of ERTS-1 imagery, Bolivia will have for the first time a geomorphological map at a scale of 1:100,000. Now the researcher and the student will be able to compare the distribution of the existing shapes of the country, which have been modelled by diverse processes, factors, and agents. This geomorphological information will be very useful in its application to mining, especially alluvial beds, engineering work, and other geological studies. This map is divided into ten geomorphological units which coincide with the geostructural units of the western region of the country

    Levy Flights in Inhomogeneous Media

    We investigate the impact of external periodic potentials on superdiffusive random walks known as Levy flights and show that even strongly superdiffusive transport is substantially affected by the external field. Unlike ordinary random walks, Levy flights are surprisingly sensitive to the shape of the potential while their asymptotic behavior ceases to depend on the Levy index μ\mu . Our analysis is based on a novel generalization of the Fokker-Planck equation suitable for systems in thermal equilibrium. Thus, the results presented are applicable to the large class of situations in which superdiffusion is caused by topological complexity, such as diffusion on folded polymers and scale-free networks.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Role of Alcohol in Late-Life Suicide

    Suicide is among the leading causes of death in the United States, ranking 10th to 12th annually, depending on the year. Rates of suicide increase markedly among Americans over age 75, especially among white men. After age 85, rates are >5-fold higher in this group than in the general population. The relationship between alcohol use and later-life suicide is complex and currently ill defined. Substance use disorders, particularly alcohol abuse and dependence, are the second most common category of axis I disorders associated with completed suicide among adults aged 65 and older, following only depression. The co-occurrence of alcohol use disorders and depression heightens suicide risk. Most studies that have evaluated the effects of alcohol in geriatric suicide have focused on older adults who met DSM criteria for abuse and/or dependence. However, the majority of older adults who are experiencing problems related to their alcohol use do not meet alcohol abuse/dependence criteria. Therefore, the role of at-risk and problem alcohol use in geriatric suicide may be underestimated. Drinking among elders elevates suicide risk through interactions with other factors that are more prevalent in this age group, such as depressive symptoms, medical illness, negatively perceived health status, and low social support. This article reviews the literature related to alcohol use and suicide among older adults.     On the nucleon self-energy in nuclear matter

    We consider the nucleon self-energy in nuclear matter in the absence of Pauli blocking. It is evaluated using the partial-wave analysis of NNNN scattering data. Our results are compared with that of a realistic calculation to estimate the effect of this blocking.     Levy flights and Levy -Schroedinger semigroups

    We analyze two different confining mechanisms for L\'{e}vy flights in the presence of external potentials. One of them is due to a conservative force in the corresponding Langevin equation. Another is implemented by Levy-Schroedinger semigroups which induce so-called topological Levy processes (Levy flights with locally modified jump rates in the master equation). Given a stationary probability function (pdf) associated with the Langevin-based fractional Fokker-Planck equation, we demonstrate that generically there exists a topological L\'{e}vy process with the very same invariant pdf and in the reverse.Comment: To appear in Cent.     Zusammenfassung: Kontaktgranulome sind gutartige, meist einseitige chronisch entzündliche Erkrankungen im Bereich des Processus vocalis des Kehlkopfs. Auf der Gegenseite findet sich oft an korrespondierender Stelle ein Kontaktulkus. Fremdkörpergefühl, Räusperzwang, Heiserkeit und eine verminderte stimmliche Belastbarkeit stehen klinisch im Vordergrund, insbesondere bei Patienten mit Sprechberufen und mangelnder Stimmtechnik. Ein Malignom kann nahezu immer anamnestisch und klinisch ausgeschlossen werden, weshalb eine Biopsie nur bei Malignomverdacht begründet ist. Bei Verdacht auf eine gastroösophageale Refluxkrankheit (GERD) ist eine entsprechende fachärztliche Abklärung angezeigt. Das Therapieprinzip sollte aufgrund der Multikausalität für jeden Patienten entsprechend angepasst werden. Dabei soll eine logopädische Stimmtherapie als Basis jeglicher Therapie angeordnet werden. Eine Antirefluxtherapie sowie eine psychologische Beratung können gelegentlich hilfreich sein. Operative Abtragungen sollen vermieden werden wegen der Gefahr des Rezidivs. Anhand von 2Fallbeispielen wird der klassische Verlauf des Krankheitsbildes geschildert und anschießend auf Ätiologie, Symptome, Diagnostik und Therapie eingegange

    Effective DBHF Method for Asymmetric Nuclear Matter and Finite Nuclei

    A new decomposition of the Dirac structure of nucleon self-energies in the Dirac Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach is adopted to investigate the equation of state for asymmetric nuclear matter. The effective coupling constants of σ\sigma , ω\omega , δ\delta and ρ\rho mesons with a density dependence in the relativistic mean field approach are deduced by reproducing the nucleon self-energy resulting from the DBHF at each density for symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter. With these couplings the properties of finite nuclei are investigated. The agreement of charge radii and binding energies of finite nuclei with the experimental data are improved simultaneously in comparison with the projection method. It seems that the properties of finite nuclei are sensitive to the scheme used for the DBHF self-energy extraction. We may conclude that the properties of the asymmetric nuclear matter and finite nuclei could be well described by the new decomposition approach of the G matrix.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

    Single QTL effects, epistasis, and pleiotropy account for two-thirds of the phenotypic F(2) variance of growth and obesity in DU6i x DBA/2 mice

    Genes influencing body weight and composition and serum concentrations of leptin, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) in nonfasting animals were mapped in an intercross of the extreme high-growth mouse line DU6i and the inbred line DBA/2. Significant loci with major effects (F > 7.07) for body weight, obesity, and muscle weight were found on chromosomes 1, 4, 5, 7, 11, 12, 13, and 17, for leptin on chromosome 14, for insulin on chromosome 4, and for IGF-I on chromosome 10 at the Igf1 gene locus itself and on chromosome 18. Significant interaction between different quantitative trait loci (QTL) positions was observed (P < 0.01). Evidence was found that loci having small direct effect on growth or obesity contribute to the obese phenotype by gene–gene interaction. The effects of QTLs, epistasis, and pleiotropy account for 64% and 63% of the phenotypic variance of body weight and fat accumulation and for over 32% of muscle weight and serum concentrations of leptin, and IGF-I in the F2 population of DU6i x DBA/2 mice.
