    Extending RTA/Linux with fixed-priority scheduling with deferred preemption

    Fixed-Priority Scheduling with Deferred Preemption (FPDS) is a middle ground between Fixed-Priority Pre-emptive Scheduling and Fixed-Priority Non-preemptive Scheduling, and offers advantages with respect to context switch overhead and resource access control. In this paper we present our work on extending the real-time operating system RTAI/Linux with support for FPDS. We give an overview of possible alternatives, describe our design choices and implementation, and verify through a series of measurements that indicate that a FPDS implementation in a real-world RTOS is feasible with minimal overhead

    De quarantaineziekte bruinrot van aardappel, veroorzaakt door de bacterie Ralstonia (voorheen : Pseudomonas solanacearum) werd in Nederland voor het eerst met zekerheid aangetroffen in 1992. Het betrof een geïsoleerd geval in Zuid-Limburg, dat later verbonden bleek te zijn met een eerder opgetreden besmetting in België. Sindsdien is door een grote inspanning van de Plantenziektenkundige Dienst (PD), de Nederlandse Algemene Keuringsdienst (NAK), het bedrijfsleven en het onderzoek (Plant Research International (PRI - voorheen IPO) en Wageningen Universiteit veel bereikt. Dit artikel geeft een overzicht van de aanpak en het onderzoek sinds de uitbraak van bruinrot in 1995 en werpt een blik vooruit naar toekomstige ontwikkelinge

    Foot placement variables of pedestrians in community setting during curve walking

    Background: There is no precise description of changes of gait during curve walking. Research in curve walking is exclusively performed in clinical settings. Research question: Is there a difference in foot placement variables between the inner- and the outer leg during curve walking in a natural environment? And are these differences correlated with time or the curvature of the path? Method: During this observational study, camera footage was shot on a crossing where pedestrians were not aware of being filmed. Participants (n = 21, male, 18?40 yrs) were selected from this video footage. Using the software package ?Movieprocessing?, the kinematic variables (time, curvature, stride length, step length, step width and relative foot angle (RFA)) were extracted from the collected data. A MANOVA and Pearson correlation test were performed to explore the data. Results: MANOVA showed no significant differences in stride length and step length between inner- and outer leg. In contrast, a significant difference between the inner (M = 0.06, SD = 0.05) and outer leg (M = 0.10, SD = 0.06, F(20,256) = 3.577, p < .001) for the step width, and the inner (M = 11.72, SD = 7.99) and outer leg (M = 11.30, SD = 8.07, F(20,256) = 4.542, p < .001) for RFA was found. Pearson correlation was significant for curvature and step width for both legs pooled (r = .28, p < .01) and the outer leg (r = .64, p < .01), as well for time and RFA in the inner (r= -.25, p < .01) and outer leg (r = .213, p < .01). Significance: This research funds further research in curve walking in natural conditions, since curve walking is found to be performed non-symmetrically and not determined by geometrics but by choice.     Analysis of the occurrence of adverse events, and in particular of solicited symptoms, following vaccination is often needed for the safety and benefit-risk evaluation of any candidate vaccine, and typically involves taking repeated measurements. In this article, it is shown that Linear Categorical Marginal Models (LCMMs) are well suited to take into account the dependencies in the data arising from the repeated measurements and provide detailed and useful information for comparing safety profiles of different products while remaining relatively easy to interpret. LCMMs are presented and applied to a Phase III clinical trial of a candidate meningococcal pediatric vaccine

    Patterns of decline in upper limb function of boys and men with DMD:An international survey

    With increasing life expectancy, upper extremity (UE) function becomes more and more important in boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Knowledge of UE function in these children is, however, limited. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the changing patterns of UE function during the course of DMD. A Web-based questionnaire on UE function, covering all domains of the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health, was distributed worldwide. Primary domains of the questionnaire were: participant characteristics, UE pain and stiffness, UE activities, and social participation. Data were described per disease stage and analyzed using descriptive analysis. A total of 213 boys/men with DMD (1-35 years) were included in this study. UE pain, stiffness, and activity limitations increased with disease stage. UE activity limitations already occurred in the early ambulatory stage. Compared to the healthy population, social participation was restricted in DMD patients and about 70 % of the respondents experienced UE limitations when performing social activities. Despite the existence of UE impairments, only 9 % of the respondents used supportive aids. Functional capacities and activities of the UE are limited already in the early ambulatory stage of patients with DMD affecting their social participation. Therefore, clinicians should pay attention to UE limitations before DMD patients lose their capacity to walk. Effective and adequate aids as well as attention for pain and stiffness in the therapeutic management could help to reduce UE activity limitations and related restrictions in social participation

    Monitoring daily physical activity of upper extremity in young and adolescent boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy:A pilot study

    Introduction Accelerometry of the upper extremity (UE) potentially provides information on the extent of activities in daily life in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The objective of this study is to evaluate the validity of home measurements of UE accelerometry. Methods This was a cross-sectional study in 16 patients with DMD (aged 7-17 years). Patients were monitored for 1 to 3 days with two accelerometers on the UE and one accelerometer on the wheelchair. Results The mean intensity of activity and the mean frequency of transfers of arm elevation from low to middle were approximately twofold higher in patients with a Brooke scale score of 1 or 2 than in patients with a Brooke scale score of 3 or 4. Correlations with the Performance of Upper Limb scale score were high for intensity and for the total frequency of arm elevations per hour. Discussion Intensity, percentage of time in middle orientation, and frequency of transfers of the upper arm correlated well with functional measurements
