New limits on nucleon decays into invisible channels with the BOREXINO Counting Test Facility

The results of background measurements with the second version of the BOREXINO Counting Test Facility (CTF-II), installed in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory, were used to obtain limits on the instability of nucleons, bounded in nuclei, for decays into invisible channels (invinv): disappearance, decays to neutrinos, etc. The approach consisted of a search for decays of unstable nuclides resulting from NN and NNNN decays of parents 12^{12}C, 13^{13}C and 16^{16}O nuclei in the liquid scintillator and the water shield of the CTF. Due to the extremely low background and the large mass (4.2 ton) of the CTF detector, the most stringent (or competitive) up-to-date experimental bounds have been established: τ(n→inv)>1.8⋅1025\tau(n \to inv) > 1.8 \cdot 10^{25} y, τ(p→inv)>1.1⋅1026\tau(p \to inv) > 1.1 \cdot 10^{26} y, τ(nn→inv)>4.9⋅1025\tau(nn \to inv) > 4.9 \cdot 10^{25} y and τ(pp→inv)>5.0⋅1025\tau(pp \to inv) > 5.0 \cdot 10^{25} y, all at 90% C.L.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys.Lett.

Excitation coulombienne des isotopes du mercure

The measurement of the γ after the Coulomb excitation by protons of mercury gives the value of the reduced transition probabilities for the first levels of 198Hg, 200Hg, 202Hg and the first and second levels of 199Hg.L'excitation coulombienne par protons des isotopes du mercure permet de déterminer les probabilités réduites d'excitation des premiers niveaux de 198Hg, 200Hg, 202Hg et des deux premiers niveaux de 199Hg

We have studied the (d, p) reaction, at 12 MeV incident energy, on the even-even rare earth nuclei 172Yb and 173Yb. From the analysis of angular distributions by D. W. B. A., spectroscopic factors can be obtained, and are compared with Nilsson model predictions

We have studied the 54Fe(3He, p) 56Co reaction at 18 MeV incident energy. We give the energy spectrum and the angular distributions of the protons emitted in the reaction. The levels of the configuration [π(ƒ1/2)-1 Îœ(p3/2)] and [π(ƒ7/2)-1 Îœ(ƒ5/2)] are weakly excited. The strongly excited levels have an energy higher than 1.70 MeV. The large cross-section of the 1.720 MeV level (Jπ = 1+) can be explained by configuration mixing

We have studied 44 MeVα-particle inelastic scattering by 48Ti, 58Fe, 62Ni, 64Ni. Angular distributions are able to determine parity, sometimes spin and the deformation parameter of onephonon levels. We obtain also information on double nuclear excitation. With these results and those previously obtained we can draw a general picture of the collective excitation in the 22 ≀ Z ≀ 30 region.
