    Geospatial assessment on land-use changes of Home Gardens in Upper Mahaweli Catchment in Sri Lanka

    Land use changes are altering the hydrologic regimes in a catchment and have potentially large impacts on its water resources. Tree rich Home Gardens (HGs)in the Upper Mahaweli Catchment (UMC) play a vital role in catchment protection while providing other ecological services especially in areas where lack of forest cover. The main objective of this research study was to assess land-use changes of HGs in UMC and to analyze determinants for changes. An integrated approach was adopted for the methodology by integrating geo-spatial technologies with socio-economic modeling. Multi-temporal satellite imagery taken in 1990, 2005 and 2017 used for spatial assessment. Socioeconomic assessment was carried out to assess determinants for changes by developing a Binary logistic regression model using spatial, biophysical, and socio-economic determinants as predictor variables. According to spatial assessment a significant change has been revealed in Nuwara Eliya District of the UMC from 1990 to 2017. The most prominent changes have been occurred during 1990-2005 compared with to 2005 - 2017. During these periods HG land use has been increased by 14.85 % and 5.25%. In contrast, the distinct land use change was the increment of annual crop-based land use by 44.95% during 1990-2005 period. Spatial determinants were positively influenced for the conversion of HGs into other land uses. All other socio-economic determinants except age of the household head were significant for land use changes. Since conversion of HGs into annual cropbased land use would induce reduce tree cover of the UMC which lead to hinder ecological services of catchment protection function derived from HGs, policy strategies should focus on providing sufficient incentives to enhance tree cover of the HGs to control the conversion and to restore ecological services.DOI: http://doi.org/10.31357/fhss/vjhss.v06i01.0

    Backstepping control of three-phase three-level four-leg shunt active power filter

    In this paper, backstepping control for three-level four-leg shunt active power filter (SAPF) system is proposed. The adopted filtering topology requires both a three-dimensional space vector modulation (3DSVM) for controlling the three-level four-leg inverter as well as DC voltage and filter currents control. The regulation of the DC voltage and filter currents is accomplished by backstepping controllers. The voltage-balancing control of two split DC capacitors of the three-level four-leg SAPF is achieved using three-level three-dimensional space vector modulation equipped by a balancing strategy based on the effective use of the redundant switching states of the inverter voltage vectors. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed filtering system in terms of the compensation of the harmonics and the zero sequence current and the operation at unity power factor.Keywords: shunt active power filter; three-dimensional space vector modulation; multilevel four-leg inverter; backstepping control; synchronous reference frame theory

    Enhanced Heat Transfer from Arrays of Jets Impinging on Plates

    Multiple jets of various shapes, orientation and configuration are used regularly in a wide range of engineering applications to provide heating or cooling with impingement on a plate being one of the most common configurations due to the improved heat transfer rates. Design optimization has largely relied on empirical correlations that are limited by the range over which they were originally generated. Computational Fluid Mechanics is now sufficiently advanced to be used as an alternative method for obtaining optimal designs. This project uses the commercial Fluent package to compute heat transfer from a bank of jets impinging on a plate. Results for a single jet are validated against experimental data. The use of advanced turbulence modeling and appropriate boundary layer formulations are key ingredients for obtaining reliable calculations. The heat transfer resulting form the use of multi-jet configurations will be discussed in the paper

    Enhancement of On-grid PV System under Irradiance and Temperature Variations Using New Optimized Adaptive Controller

    Solar Energy is one of the key solutions to future electrical power generation. Photovoltaic Plants (PV) are fast growing to satisfy electrical power demand. Different maximum power point tracking techniques (MPPT) are used to maximize PV systems generated power. In this paper, on grid PV system model in MATLAB SIMULINK is tested under sudden irradiance and cell temperature variations. Incremental Conductance MPPT is used to maximize generated power from the PV system with the help of new adaptive controller to withstand these heavy disturbances. The new adaptive controller is tuned for optimal operation using two different optimization techniques (Invasive weed and Harmony search).Optimization results for the two techniques are compared. .A robustness test is made to check system stability to withstand different random irradiance and cell temperature patterns without failure to track the maximum power point.Finally, a brief comparison is made with a previous literature and the new adaptive controller gives better results

    Assessment of Nutrition Information System Using Health Metrics Network Framework

    Nutrition Information System (NIS) developed by Heath Ministry's Nutritional Development Directorate since 2011 covers data of toddler assessment in integrated health care, malnutrition case, coverages of Fe tablet among pregnant mothers, iodized salt consumption, vitamin A distribution and exclusive breastfeeding. This study aimed to assess NIS performance in South Tangerang City Health Agency using WHO's Health Metrics Network 2008 framework. NIS is national level information system with gradual reporting mechanism starting from 508 districts/cities to 34 provinces ended at national level. Eight districts/cities over Banten Province have conducted NIS. This study had six informants namely nutrition section, health resources and health information system section, two nutrition duties and two integrated health care workers. Data was collected on January - April 2013 using interview, observation and document analysis guidelines. Data analysis used interpretation analysis. The result showed no any policy and training implemented regarding nutrition surveillance. Monitoring activity was already conducted. Facilities were adequate, but the maintenance was deficient. There are six nutritional development indicators according to MDGs. Data grouping and dictionaries were available. Data reporting was conducted every month. Graphics and maps were used for presenting data. The data served was used for monitoring and making a decision on nutritional development programs at integrated health care, primary health care and health agency levels.     Quality-of-life and toxicity in cancer patients treated with multiple courses of radiation therapy

    Background Treatment of metastatic cancer patients with multiple repeat courses of radiotherapy has become more frequent due to their improved overall survival. However, very little is known about their long-term outcome. This analysis reports on the quality-of-life, hematologic toxicity, patient-reported experiences and satisfaction, and psychological distress of cancer patients treated with multiple repeat radiotherapy. Methods All patients treated with ≥5 courses of radiotherapy between 2011 and 2019 at the Department of Radiation Oncology, University Hospital Zurich (USZ) were screened for this study. A course of radiotherapy was defined as all treatment sessions to one anatomical site under one medical indication. All patients completed two questionnaires: EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire for quality-of-life and a questionnaire evaluating psychological distress and patient-reported experiences. Hematologic toxicities were assessed via a recent blood sample. Results Of n = 33 patients treated with ≥5 radiotherapy courses and being alive, 20 (60.6%) participated in this study. The most common primary tumor was non-small cell lung cancer (n = 14, 42.4%). The most common sites of irradiation were brain (n = 78, 37.1%) and bone metastases (n = 59, 28.1%). All participating patients reported that they had experienced a subjective benefit from multiple repeat radiotherapy and denied increased side effects in later radiotherapy courses. Yet, 45% (n = 9) of the patients reported an increase of psychological distress with increasing numbers of radiotherapy treatments. While global health status was stable, patients having received multiple repeat radiotherapy reported increased fatigue (p = <0.006). Blood analysis showed significantly reduced hemoglobin and lymphocyte levels compared to the healthy population (p = <0.03). Discussion and conclusion Patient-reported experiences and satisfaction of long-term cancer patients treated with multiple repeat radiotherapy are positive. However, increased levels of fatigue and significantly reduced hemoglobin and lymphocyte levels were observed. These data indicate the need to further investigate the effects of multiple courses of radiotherapy in chronic cancer patients
