    Search for supermassive magnetic monopoles using mica crystals

    The survival of the Galactic magnetic field almost certainly sets an astrophysical upper bound of approx. 10 to the minus 15th power cm(-2) sr(-1) s(-1) on the flux of monopoles. To improve significantly upon this Parker limit with direct, real time searches would require a detector area of approx. 10,000 square meters and a collection time of years. Several such searches are being contemplated. A novel alternative scheme using large mica crystals capable of recording and storing tracks of slow monopoles over a time scale of approx. 10 to the 9th power years was proposed

    Coulomb drag as a measure of trigonal warping in doped graphene

    I suggest to use the effect of Coulomb drag between two closely positioned graphite monolayers (graphene sheets) for experimental measurement of the strength of weak non-linearities of the spectrum in graphene. I consider trigonal warping as a representative mechanism responsible for the drag effect. Since graphene is relatively defect-free, I evaluate the drag conductivity in the ballistic regime and find that it is proportional to the fourth power of the warping strength.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    The causes of full ocean depth interannual variability in Drake Passage

    In recent years a number of large scale modes of Southern Hemisphere climate variability have been observed, most notably the Southern Annular Mode (SAM, e.g. Thompson and Solomon, 2002), the Pacific South American modes (PSA, e.g. Mo and Peagle, 2001), the Antarctic Dipole (e.g. Martinson and Ianuzzi, 2003), the Antarctic Circumpolar Wave (e.g. White and Peterson, 1996), and of course the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). All have pronounced effects over or in the Southern Ocean, and may be expected to account for a significant part of the interannual variability observed there. Most studies analyse these phenomena from a large-scale point of view, often by extracting modes from Southern Hemisphere atmospheric and oceanic fields using various mathematical techniques. In this study we have taken an alternative approach, and tried to understand the causes of the full ocean depth variability in Drake Passage observed in the WOCE SR1b repeat hydrographic sections (Cunningham et al. 2003)

    An observational study of children interacting with an augmented story book

    We present findings of an observational study investigating how young children interact with augmented reality story books. Children aged between 6 and 7 read and interacted with one of two story books aimed at early literacy education. The books pages were augmented using animated virtual 3D characters, sound, and interactive tasks. Introducing novel media to young children requires system and story designers to consider not only technological issues but also questions arising from story design and the design of interactive sequences. We discuss findings of our study and implications regarding the implementation of augmented story books
