Q^2 Evolution of the Neutron Spin Structure Moments using a ^3He Target
We have measured the spin structure functions g_1 and g_2 of ^3He in a double-spin experiment by inclusively scattering polarized electrons at energies ranging from 0.862 to 5.058 GeV off a polarized ^3He target at a 15.5° scattering angle. Excitation energies covered the resonance and the onset of the deep inelastic regions. We have determined for the first time the Q^2 evolution of Γ_1(Q^2)=∫_0^1g_1(x,Q^2)dx, Γ_2(Q^2)=∫_0^1g_2(x,Q^2)dx, and d_2(Q^2)=∫_0^1x^2[2g_1(x,Q^2)+3g_2(x,Q^2)]dx for the neutron in the range 0.1 ≤ Q^2 ≤0.9  GeV^2 with good precision. Γ_1(Q^2) displays a smooth variation from high to low Q^2. The Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule holds within uncertainties and d_2 is nonzero over the measured range
Q^2 Evolution of the Generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Integral for the Neutron using a ^3He Target
We present data on the inclusive scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized ^3He target at energies from 0.862 to 5.06 GeV, obtained at a scattering angle of 15.5°. Our data include measurements from the quasielastic peak, through the nucleon resonance region, and beyond, and were used to determine the virtual photon cross-section difference σ_(1/2)-σ_(3/2). We extract the extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the neutron in the range of four-momentum transfer squared Q^2 of 0.1–0.9   GeV^2
Accessing the Longitudinally Polarized Photon Content of the Proton
We investigate the QED Compton process (QEDCS) in longitudinally polarized
lepton-proton scattering both in the elastic and inelastic channels and show
that the cross section can be expressed in terms of the polarized equivalent
photon distribution of the proton. We provide the necessary kinematical
constraints to extract the polarized photon content of the proton using this
process at HERMES, COMPASS and eRHIC. We also discuss the suppression of the
major background process coming from virtual Compton scattering. We point out
that such an experiment can give valuable information on in the
small , broad region at the future polarized collider eRHIC and
especially in the lower , medium region in fixed target experiments.Comment: Version to appear in PR
Higher moments of nucleon spin structure functions in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and in a resonance model
The third moment of the twist-3 part of the nucleon spin structure
function is generalized to arbitrary momentum transfer and is
evaluated in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT) up to order
and in a unitary isobar model (MAID). We show how to link
as well as higher moments of the nucleon spin structure functions
and to nucleon spin polarizabilities. We compare our results with the
most recent experimental data, and find a good description of these available
data within the unitary isobar model. We proceed to extract the twist-4 matrix
element which appears in the suppressed term in the twist
expansion of the spin structure function for proton and neutron.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figure
3He Spin-Dependent Cross Sections and Sum Rules
We present a measurement of the spin-dependent cross sections for the 3→He(→e,e′)X reaction in the quasielastic and resonance regions at a four-momentum transfer 0.1≤Q2≤0.9  GeV2. The spin-structure functions have been extracted and used to evaluate the nuclear Burkhardt-Cottingham and extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rules for the first time. The data are also compared to an impulse approximation calculation and an exact three-body Faddeev calculation in the quasielastic region
Performance of the Electromagnetic Calorimeter of the HERMES Experiment
The performance of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the HERMES experiment
is described. The calorimeter consists of 840 radiation resistant F101
lead-glass counters. The response to positrons up to 27.5 GeV, the comparison
between the measured energy and the momentum reconstructed from tracking,
long-term stability, hadron rejection and neutral meson invariant mass
reconstruction are shown.Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, LaTeX, accepted by NI
The Jlab Upgrade - Studies of the Nucleon with CLAS12
An overview is presented on the program to study the nucleon structure at the
12 GeV JLab upgrade using the CLAS12 detector. The focus is on deeply virtual
exclusive processes to access the generalized parton distributions,
semni-inclusive processes to study transverse momentum dependent distribution
functions, and inclusive spin structure functions and resonance transition form
factors at high Q^2 and with high precision.Comment: 7 pages, 12 figures, NSTAR 2007 conference, Bonn, September 5-8, 200
Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule and forward spin polarizabilities in Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory
We study spin-dependent sum rules for forward virtual Compton
scattering(VVCS) off the nucleon in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory at
order . We show how these sum rules can be evaluated from low energy
expansions (in the virtual photon energy) of the forward VVCS amplitudes. We
study in particular the Burkhardt -Cottingham sum rule in HBChPT and higher
terms in the low energy expansion, which can be related to the generalized
forward spin polarizabilities of the nucleon. The dependence of these
observables on the photon virtuality can be accessed, at small and
intermediate values, from existing and forthcoming data at Jefferson Lab.Comment: 16 pages,4 fig
Spin structure of the nucleon at low energies
The spin structure of the nucleon is analyzed in the framework of a
Lorentz-invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory. The
structure functions of doubly virtual Compton scattering are calculated to
one-loop accuracy (fourth order in the chiral expansion). We discuss the
generalization of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, the Burkhardt-Cottingham
sum rule and moments of these. We give predictions for the forward and the
longitudinal-transverse spin polarizabilities of the proton and the neutron at
zero and finite photon virtuality. A detailed comparison to results obtained in
heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is also given.Comment: 29 pp, 14 fig
