Multisensory Integration Sites Identified by Perception of Spatial Wavelet Filtered Visual Speech Gesture Information
Perception of speech is improved when presentation of the audio signal is accompanied by concordant visual speech gesture information. This enhancement is most prevalent when the audio signal is degraded. One potential means by which the brain affords perceptual enhancement is thought to be through the integration of concordant information from multiple sensory channels in a common site of convergence, multisensory integration (MSI) sites. Some studies have identified potential sites in the superior temporal gyrus/sulcus (STG/S) that are responsive to multisensory information from the auditory speech signal and visual speech movement. One limitation of these studies is that they do not control for activity resulting from attentional modulation cued by such things as visual information signaling the onsets and offsets of the acoustic speech signal, as well as activity resulting from MSI of properties of the auditory speech signal with aspects of gross visual motion that are not specific to place of articulation information. This fMRI experiment uses spatial wavelet bandpass filtered Japanese sentences presented with background multispeaker audio noise to discern brain activity reflecting MSI induced by auditory and visual correspondence of place of articulation information that controls for activity resulting from the above-mentioned factors. The experiment consists of a low-frequency (LF) filtered condition containing gross visual motion of the lips, jaw, and head without specific place of articulation information, a midfrequency (MF) filtered condition containing place of articulation information, and an unfiltered (UF) condition. Sites of MSI selectively induced by auditory and visual correspondence of place of articulation information were determined by the presence of activity for both the MF and UF conditions relative to the LF condition. Based on these criteria, sites of MSI were found predominantly in the left middle temporal gyrus (MTG), and the left STG/S (including the auditory cortex). By controlling for additional factors that could also induce greater activity resulting from visual motion information, this study identifies potential MSI sites that we believe are involved with improved speech perception intelligibility
Dirichlet Boundary State in Linear Dilaton Background
Dirichlet-branes have emerged as important objects in studying
nonperturbative string theory. It is important to generalize these objects to
more general backgrounds other than the usual flat background. The simplest
case is the linear dilaton condensate. The usual Dirichlet boundary condition
violates conformal invariance in such a background. We show that by switching
on a certain boundary interaction, conformal invariance is restored. An

Gauge Fields and Space-Time
In this article I attempt to collect some ideas,opinions and formulae which
may be useful in solving the problem of gauge/ string / space-time
correspondence This includes the validity of D-brane representation, counting
of gauge-invariant words, relations between the null states and the Yang-Mills
equations and the discussion of the strong coupling limit of the string sigma

A class of non-singular gravi-dilaton backgrounds
We present a class of static, spherically symmetric, non-singular solutions
of the tree-level string effective action, truncated to first order in
. In the string frame the solutions approach asymptotically (at and ) two different anti-de Sitter configurations, thus
interpolating between two maximally symmetric states of different constant
curvature. The radial-dependent dilaton defines a string coupling which is
everywhere finite, with a peak value that can be chosen arbitrarily small so as
to neglect quantum-loop corrections. This example stresses the possible
importance of finite-size corrections, typical of string theory, in

Exact C=1 Boundary Conformal Field Theories
We present a solution of the problem of a free massless scalar field on the
half line interacting through a periodic potential on the boundary. For a
critical value of the period, this system is a conformal field theory with a
non-trivial and explicitly calculable S-matrix for scattering from the
boundary. Unlike all other exactly solvable conformal field theories, it is
non-rational ({\it i.e.} has infinitely many primary fields). It describes the
critical behavior of a number of condensed matter systems, including

Simulation study of intracity helicopter operations under instrument conditions to category 1 minimums
A fixed-base simulator study was conducted to define pilot workload and task performance associated with instrument flight operations for an intracity helicopter passenger service. Displays considered necessary to provide a minimal capability under Instrument Flight Rules conditions were used to fly a representative commercial helicopter route structure in the New York area, with each terminal assumed to be equipped with a precision approach guidance system. A cross section of pilots participated as test subjects, and despite the high workload level, the results indicated that for the assumptions employed, minimums of 61 m (200 ft) ceiling and 805 m (0.5 mile) visibility were feasible

Born-Regulated Gravity in Four Dimensions
Previous work involving Born-regulated gravity theories in two dimensions is
extended to four dimensions. The action we consider has two dimensionful
parameters. Black hole solutions are studied for typical values of these
parameters. For masses above a critical value determined in terms of these
parameters, the event horizon persists. For masses below this critical value,
the event horizon disappears, leaving a ``bare mass'', though of course no

A grid-based infrastructure for distributed retrieval
In large-scale distributed retrieval, challenges of latency, heterogeneity, and dynamicity emphasise the importance of infrastructural support in reducing the development costs of state-of-the-art solutions. We present a service-based infrastructure for distributed retrieval which blends middleware facilities and a design framework to âliftâ the resource sharing approach and the computational services of a European Grid platform into the domain of e-Science applications. In this paper, we give an overview of the DILIGENT Search Framework and illustrate its exploitation in the ïŹeld of Earth Science
