ATLAS Jet Energy Scale
Jets originating from the fragmentation of quarks and gluons are the most
common, and complicated, final state objects produced at hadron colliders. A
precise knowledge of their energy calibration is therefore of great importance
at experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, while is very difficult to
ascertain. We present in-situ techniques and results for the jet energy scale
at ATLAS using recent collision data. ATLAS has demonstrated an understanding
of the necessary jet energy corrections to within \approx 4% in the central
region of the calorimeter.Comment: Proceedings from XXXI Physics in Collisio
Commuting symmetry operators of the Dirac equation, Killing-Yano and Schouten-Nijenhuis brackets
In this paper we derive the most general first-order symmetry operator
commuting with the Dirac operator in all dimensions and signatures. Such an
operator splits into Clifford even and Clifford odd parts which are given in
terms of odd Killing-Yano and even closed conformal Killing-Yano inhomogeneous
forms respectively. We study commutators of these symmetry operators and give
necessary and sufficient conditions under which they remain of the first-order.
In this specific setting we can introduce a Killing-Yano bracket, a bilinear
operation acting on odd Killing-Yano and even closed conformal Killing-Yano
forms, and demonstrate that it is closely related to the Schouten-Nijenhuis
bracket. An important non-trivial example of vanishing Killing-Yano brackets is
given by Dirac symmetry operators generated from the principal conformal
Killing-Yano tensor [hep-th/0612029]. We show that among these operators one
can find a complete subset of mutually commuting operators. These operators
underlie separability of the Dirac equation in Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes in all
dimensions [arXiv:0711.0078].Comment: 37 pages, no figure
Motives of Socially Responsible Business Conduct
The social and ecological challenges that governments face have raised their interest in socially responsible business conduct (SRBC). In this article we analyze the motives of executives to perform SRBC. We distinguish three types of motives: financial, ethical and altruistic motives. We test the hypotheses on a sample of 473 executives. The estimation results show that SRBC is driven by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic motives, but that the intrinsic motives are stronger than the extrinsic motive.intrinsic motivation;extrinsic motivation;corporate social responsibility;socially responsible business conduct
Transcription analysis of apple fruit development using cDNA microarrays
The knowledge of the molecular mechanisms underlying fruit quality traits is fundamental to devise efficient marker-assisted selection strategies and to improve apple breeding. In this study, cDNA microarray technology was used to identify genes whose expression changes during fruit development and maturation thus potentially involved in fruit quality traits. The expression profile of 1,536 transcripts was analysed by microarray hybridisation. A total of 177 genes resulted to be differentially expressed in at least one of the developmental stages considered. Gene ontology annotation was employed to univocally describe gene function, while cluster analysis allowed grouping genes according to their expression profile. An overview of the transcriptional changes and of the metabolic pathways involved in fruit development was obtained. As expected, August and September are the two months where the largest number of differentially expressed genes was observed. In particular, 85 genes resulted to be up-regulated in September. Even though most of the differentially expressed genes are involved in primary metabolism, several other interesting functions were detected and will be presented
Ready to Eat Nectarines - Assuring Quality in the Chain
Time-resolved reflectance spectroscopy, coupled to the modelling of firmness decrease, was used to predict at harvest softening behaviour of nectarines. Selected fruit were used in an export trial from Italy to The Netherlands. Quality assessed after shelf life was in agreement with the predicted firmness for fruit of different stages of maturity, showing that it is possible to select fruit at harvest for different market destinations and prevent transportation of fruit unsuitable for consumption
QND measurement of a superconducting qubit in the weakly projective regime
Quantum state detectors based on switching of hysteretic Josephson junctions
biased close to their critical current are simple to use but have strong
back-action. We show that the back-action of a DC-switching detector can be
considerably reduced by limiting the switching voltage and using a fast
cryogenic amplifier, such that a single readout can be completed within 25 ns
at a repetition rate of 1 MHz without loss of contrast. Based on a sequence of
two successive readouts we show that the measurement has a clear quantum
non-demolition character, with a QND fidelity of 75 %.Comment: submitted to PR
