Observations of the Earth's magnetic field from the Space Station: Measurement at high and extremely low altitude using Space Station-controlled free-flyers
Simulation studies established that the main (core), crustal and electrojet components of the Earth's magnetic field can be observed with greater resolution or over a longer time-base than is presently possible by using the capabilities provided by the space station. Two systems are studied. The first, a large lifetime, magnetic monitor would observe the main field and its time variation. The second, a remotely-piloted, magnetic probe would observe the crustal field at low altitude and the electrojet field in situ. The system design and the scientific performance of these systems is assessed. The advantages of the space station are reviewed
Ultrareliable, fault-tolerant control systems: A conceptual description
An Ultrareliable, Fault-Tolerant, Control-System (UFTCS) concept is described using a systems design philosophy which allows development of system structures containing virtually no common elements. Common elements limit achievable system reliability and can cause catastrophic loss of fault-tolerant system function. The UFTCS concept provides the means for removing common system elements by permitting the elements of the system to operate as independent, uncoupled entities. Multiple versions of the application program are run on dissimilar hardware. Fault tolerance is achieved through the use of static redundancy management
Results of the US contribution to the joint US/USSR Bering Sea experiment
The atmospheric circulation which occurred during the Bering Sea Experiment, 15 February to 10 March 1973, in and around the experiment area is analyzed and related to the macroscale morphology and dynamics of the sea ice cover. The ice cover was very complex in structure, being made up of five ice types, and underwent strong dynamic activity. Synoptic analyses show that an optimum variety of weather situations occurred during the experiment: an initial strong anticyclonic period (6 days), followed by a period of strong cyclonic activity (6 days), followed by weak anticyclonic activity (3 days), and finally a period of weak cyclonic activity (4 days). The data of the mesoscale test areas observed on the four sea ice option flights, and ship weather, and drift data give a detailed description of mesoscale ice dynamics which correlates well with the macroscale view: anticyclonic activity advects the ice southward with strong ice divergence and a regular lead and polynya pattern; cyclonic activity advects the ice northward with ice convergence, or slight divergence, and a random lead and polynya pattern
Increased seawater temperature increases the abundance and alters the structure of natural Vibrio populations associated with the coral Pocillopora damicornis.
Rising seawater temperature associated with global climate change is a significant threat to coral health and is linked to increasing coral disease and pathogen-related bleaching events. We performed heat stress experiments with the coral Pocillopora damicornis, where temperature was increased to 31°C, consistent with the 2-3°C predicted increase in summer sea surface maxima. 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing revealed a large shift in the composition of the bacterial community at 31°C, with a notable increase in Vibrio, including known coral pathogens. To investigate the dynamics of the naturally occurring Vibrio community, we performed quantitative PCR targeting (i) the whole Vibrio community and (ii) the coral pathogen Vibrio coralliilyticus. At 31°C, Vibrio abundance increased by 2-3 orders of magnitude and V. coralliilyticus abundance increased by four orders of magnitude. Using a Vibrio-specific amplicon sequencing assay, we further demonstrated that the community composition shifted dramatically as a consequence of heat stress, with significant increases in the relative abundance of known coral pathogens. Our findings provide quantitative evidence that the abundance of potential coral pathogens increases within natural communities of coral-associated microbes as a consequence of rising seawater temperature and highlight the potential negative impacts of anthropogenic climate change on coral reef ecosystems
Elimination of Schistosomiasis Transmission in Zanzibar: Baseline Findings before the Onset of a Randomized Intervention Trial.
Gaining and sustaining control of schistosomiasis and, whenever feasible, achieving local elimination are the year 2020 targets set by the World Health Organization. In Zanzibar, various institutions and stakeholders have joined forces to eliminate urogenital schistosomiasis within 5 years. We report baseline findings before the onset of a randomized intervention trial designed to assess the differential impact of community-based praziquantel administration, snail control, and behavior change interventions. In early 2012, a baseline parasitological survey was conducted in ∼20,000 people from 90 communities in Unguja and Pemba. Risk factors for schistosomiasis were assessed by administering a questionnaire to adults. In selected communities, local knowledge about schistosomiasis transmission and prevention was determined in focus group discussions and in-depths interviews. Intermediate host snails were collected and examined for shedding of cercariae. The baseline Schistosoma haematobium prevalence in school children and adults was 4.3% (range: 0-19.7%) and 2.7% (range: 0-26.5%) in Unguja, and 8.9% (range: 0-31.8%) and 5.5% (range: 0-23.4%) in Pemba, respectively. Heavy infections were detected in 15.1% and 35.6% of the positive school children in Unguja and Pemba, respectively. Males were at higher risk than females (odds ratio (OR): 1.45; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03-2.03). Decreasing adult age (OR: 1.04; CI: 1.02-1.06), being born in Pemba (OR: 1.48; CI: 1.02-2.13) or Tanzania (OR: 2.36; CI: 1.16-4.78), and use of freshwater (OR: 2.15; CI: 1.53-3.03) showed higher odds of infection. Community knowledge about schistosomiasis was low. Only few infected Bulinus snails were found. The relatively low S. haematobium prevalence in Zanzibar is a promising starting point for elimination. However, there is a need to improve community knowledge about disease transmission and prevention. Control measures tailored to the local context, placing particular attention to hot-spot areas, high-risk groups, and individuals, will be necessary if elimination is to be achieved
Intergalactic HII Regions Discovered in SINGG
A number of very small isolated HII regions have been discovered at projected
distances up to 30 kpc from their nearest galaxy. These HII regions appear as
tiny emission line objects in narrow band images obtained by the NOAO Survey
for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG). We present spectroscopic
confirmation of four isolated HII regions in two systems, both systems have
tidal HI features. The results are consistent with stars forming in interactive
debris due to cloud-cloud collisions. The H-alpha luminosities of the isolated
HII regions are equivalent to the ionizing flux of only a few O stars each.
They are most likely ionized by stars formed in situ, and represent atypical
star formation in the low density environment of the outer parts of galaxies. A
small but finite intergalactic star formation rate will enrich and ionize the
surrounding medium. In one system, NGC 1533, we calculate a star formation rate
of 1.5e-3 msun/yr, resulting in a metal enrichment of ~1e-3 solar for the
continuous formation of stars. Such systems may have been more common in the
past and a similar enrichment level is measured for the `metallicity floor' in
damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems.Comment: accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal, 19 pages,

Sensitivity and Specificity of Multiple Kato-Katz Thick Smears and a Circulating Cathodic Antigen Test for Schistosoma mansoni Diagnosis Pre- and Post-repeated-Praziquantel Treatment
Two Kato-Katz thick smears (Kato-Katzs) from a single stool are currently recommended for diagnosing Schistosoma mansoni infections to map areas for intervention. This ‘gold standard’ has low sensitivity at low infection intensities. The urine point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen test (POC-CCA) is potentially more sensitive but how accurately they detect S. mansoni after repeated praziquantel treatments, their suitability for measuring drug efficacy and their correlation with egg counts remain to be fully understood. We compared the accuracies of one to six Kato-Katzs and one POC-CCA for the diagnosis of S. mansoni in primary-school children who have received zero to ten praziquantel treatments. We determined the impact each diagnostic approach may have on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and drug-efficacy findings
The Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies- II. The Star Formation Rate Density of the Local Universe
We derive observed Halpha and R band luminosity densities of an HI-selected
sample of nearby galaxies using the SINGG sample to be l_Halpha' = (9.4 +/-
1.8)e38 h_70 erg s^-1 Mpc^-3 for Halpha and l_R' = (4.4 +/- 0.7)e37 h_70 erg
s^-1 A^-1 Mpc^-3 in the R band. This R band luminosity density is approximately
70% of that found by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This leads to a local star
formation rate density of log(SFRD) = -1.80 +0.13/-0.07(random) +/-
0.03(systematic) + log(h_70) after applying a mean internal extinction
correction of 0.82 magnitudes. The gas cycling time of this sample is found to
be t_gas = 7.5 +1.3/-2.1 Gyr, and the volume-averaged equivalent width of the
SINGG galaxies is EW(Halpha) = 28.8 +7.2/-4.7 A (21.2 +4.2/-3.5 A without
internal dust correction). As with similar surveys, these results imply that
SFRD(z) decreases drastically from z ~ 1.5 to the present. A comparison of the
dynamical masses of the SINGG galaxies evaluated at their optical limits with
their stellar and HI masses shows significant evidence of downsizing: the most
massive galaxies have a larger fraction of their mass locked up in stars
compared with HI, while the opposite is true for less massive galaxies. We show
that the application of the Kennicutt star formation law to a galaxy having the
median orbital time at the optical limit of this sample results in a star
formation rate decay with cosmic time similar to that given by the SFRD(z)
evolution. This implies that the SFRD(z) evolution is primarily due to the
secular evolution of galaxies, rather than interactions or mergers. This is

The Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies: I. Description and Initial Results
We introduce the Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG), a
census of star formation in HI-selected galaxies. The survey consists of
H-alpha and R-band imaging of a sample of 468 galaxies selected from the HI
Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS). The sample spans three decades in HI mass and
is free of many of the biases that affect other star forming galaxy samples. We
present the criteria for sample selection, list the entire sample, discuss our
observational techniques, and describe the data reduction and calibration
methods. This paper focuses on 93 SINGG targets whose observations have been
fully reduced and analyzed to date. The majority of these show a single
Emission Line Galaxy (ELG). We see multiple ELGs in 13 fields, with up to four
ELGs in a single field. All of the targets in this sample are detected in
H-alpha indicating that dormant (non-star forming) galaxies with M(HI) > ~3e7
M_sun are very rare. A database of the measured global properties of the ELGs
is presented. The ELG sample spans four orders of magnitude in luminosity
(H-alpha and R-band), and H-alpha surface brightness, nearly three orders of
magnitude in R surface brightness and nearly two orders of magnitude in H-alpha
equivalent width (EW). The surface brightness distribution of our sample is
broader than that of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic sample, the
(EW) distribution is broader than prism-selected samples, and the morphologies
found include all common types of star forming galaxies (e.g. irregular,
spiral, blue compact dwarf, starbursts, merging and colliding systems, and even
