NOCTURNAL ARBOREALITY IN SNAKES IN THE SWAMPLANDS OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN OF SOUTH-CENTRAL LOUISIANA AND BIG THICKET NATIONAL PRESERVE OF SOUTHEAST TEXAS
The southeastern United States is home to a diverse assemblage of snakes, but only one species, the Rough Greensnake (Opheodrys aestivus), is considered specialized for a predominantly arboreal lifestyle. Other species, such as Ratsnakes (genus Pantherophis) and Ribbonsnakes/Gartersnakes (genus Thamnophis), are widely known to climb into vegetation and trees. Some explanations given for snake climbing behavior are foraging, thermoregulation, predator avoidance, and response to flood. Reports of arboreality in snake species typically not associated with life in the trees (such as terrestrial, aquatic, and even fossorial species) usually come from single observations, with no knowledge of prevalence of the behavior. Here, we report on arboreality of snake species detected during 8 years of night surveys in the Atchafalaya Basin of south-central Louisiana and 5+ years of night surveys in Big Thicket National Preserve in southeast Texas. We recorded a total of 1,088 detections of 19 snake species between the two study areas, with 348 detections above ground level (32%). The Rough Greensnake and Western Ribbonsnake (Thamnophis proximus) accounted for nearly 75% of total arboreal detections among the two study areas. However, with one exception, all snake species detected more than once between both study areas had at least one arboreal detection. These observations demonstrate that snakes with widely varying natural histories may be found in the trees at night, and for some species, this behavior may be more common than previously believed
“You’re important, Jeremy, but not that important” : personalised responses and equivocation in political interviews
This study was an assessment of personalised equivocation in political interviews, namely, politicians’ responses to questions which, in lieu of an explicit reply, are directed personally at the interviewer. Twenty-six interviews with recent UK party leaders were analysed in terms of questions, replies, and personalisation. The majority of personalised responses contained elements of criticism, although over a quarter were more amicable. For the eight featured politicians, the use of such responses was adjudged to be more about individual communicative style than their position on the political spectrum. Only one politician did not respond in this manner, indicating a more widespread use of personalisation than was previously suggested. Furthermore, an evaluation of interviewer follow-ups showed its effectiveness as a diversionary tactic in the face of troublesome questions. In terms of the proportion of questions which receive a full reply, a general reply rate analysis highlighted how recent political leaders have changed little from their predecessors
Chattanooga Community Members Willingness to Use Retail Clinics: A Quantitative Approach
This study explored the willingness of Chattanooga community members to utilize retail clinics for simple ailments rather than the area EDs. Specifically, community members ages 25-45 were surveyed and asked to rate their willingness to use a retail clinic for their acute healthcare needs rather than the overcrowded local EDs. Additionally, this study explored community members’ perceived barriers to use retail clinics. Results were compared between demographic variables such as yearly income, race, gender, and age
Herpetofaunal Inventories of the National Parks of South Florida and the Caribbean: Volume III. Big Cypress National Preserve
Amphibian declines and extinctions have been documented around the world, often in protected
natural areas. Concern for this trend has prompted the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Park
Service to document all species of amphibians that occur within U.S. National Parks and to search for any
signs that amphibians may be declining. This study, an inventory of amphibian species in Big Cypress
National Preserve, was conducted from 2002 to 2003. The goals of the project were to create a
georeferenced inventory of amphibian species, use new analytical techniques to estimate proportion of
sites occupied by each species, look for any signs of amphibian decline (missing species, disease, die-offs,
and so forth.), and to establish a protocol that could be used for future monitoring efforts.
Several sampling methods were used to accomplish these goals. Visual encounter surveys and
anuran vocalization surveys were conducted in all habitats throughout the park to estimate the proportion
of sites or proportion of area occupied (PAO) by each amphibian species in each habitat. Opportunistic
collections, as well as limited drift fence data, were used to augment the visual encounter methods for
highly aquatic or cryptic species. A total of 545 visits to 104 sites were conducted for standard sampling
alone, and 2,358 individual amphibians and 374 reptiles were encountered. Data analysis was conducted
in program PRESENCE to provide PAO estimates for each of the anuran species.
All of the amphibian species historically found in Big Cypress National Preserve were detected
during this project. At least one individual of each of the four salamander species was captured during
sampling. Each of the anuran species in the preserve was adequately sampled using standard
herpetological sampling methods, and PAO estimates were produced for each species of anuran by habitat.
This information serves as an indicator of habitat associations of the species and relative abundance of
sites occupied, but it will also be useful as a comparative baseline for future monitoring efforts.
In addition to sampling for amphibians, all encounters with reptiles were documented. The
sampling methods used for detecting amphibians are also appropriate for many reptile species. These
reptile locations are included in this report, but the number of reptile observations was not sufficient to
estimate PAO for reptile species. We encountered 35 of the 46 species of reptiles believed to be present in
Big Cypress National Preserve during this study, and evidence exists of the presence of four other reptile
species in the Preserve.
This study found no evidence of amphibian decline in Big Cypress National Preserve. Although no
evidence of decline was observed, several threats to amphibians were identified. Introduced species,
especially the Cuban treefrog (Osteopilus septentrionalis), are predators and competitors with several
native frog species. The recreational use of off-road vehicles has the potential to affect some amphibian
populations, and a study on those potential impacts is currently underway. Also, interference by humans
with the natural hydrologic cycle of south Florida has the potential to alter the amphibian community.
Continued monitoring of the amphibian species in Big Cypress National Preserve is recommended.
The methods used in this study were adequate to produce reliable estimates of the proportion of sites
occupied by most anuran species, and are a cost-effective means of determining the status of their
populations
“Stirring it up!” Emotionality in audience responses to political speeches
Speaker-audience interaction in political speeches has been conceptualised as a form of dialogue between speaker and audience. Of particular importance is research pioneered by Atkinson (e.g., 1983, 1984a, 1984b) on the analysis of rhetorical devices utilised by politicians to invite audience applause. Atkinson was not concerned with emotionalisation in political speech-making, rather with how applause was invited in relation to group identities through ingroup praise and/or outgroup derogation. However, his theory has provided important insights into how speakers invite audience responses, and a powerful stimulus for associated research. The purpose of this article is to address the shortfall of emotionalisation research within the realm of political speeches. We begin with an account of Atkinson’s influential theory of rhetoric, followed by a relevant critique. The focus then turns to our main aim, namely, how key findings from previous speech research can be interpreted in terms of emotionalisation. Specifically, the focus is on audience responses to the words of political speakers, and how different forms of response may reflect audience emotionality. It is proposed that both duration and frequency of invited affiliative audience responses may indicate more positive emotional audience responses, while uninvited interruptive audience applause and booing may provide notable clues to issues on which audiences have strong feelings. It is concluded that there is strong evidence that both invited and uninvited audience responses may provide important clues to emotionalisation - both positive and negative - in political speeches
The aurora kinase AIR-2 functions in the release of chromosome cohesion in Caenorhabditis elegans meiosis
Accurate chromosome segregation during cell division requires not only the establishment, but also the precise, regulated release of chromosome cohesion. Chromosome dynamics during meiosis are more complicated, because homologues separate at anaphase I whereas sister chromatids remain attached until anaphase II. How the selective release of chromosome cohesion is regulated during meiosis remains unclear. We show that the aurora-B kinase AIR-2 regulates the selective release of chromosome cohesion during Caenorhabditis elegans meiosis. AIR-2 localizes to subchromosomal regions corresponding to last points of contact between homologues in metaphase I and between sister chromatids in metaphase II. Depletion of AIR-2 by RNA interference (RNAi) prevents chromosome separation at both anaphases, with concomitant prevention of meiotic cohesin REC-8 release from meiotic chromosomes. We show that AIR-2 phosphorylates REC-8 at a major amino acid in vitro. Interestingly, depletion of two PP1 phosphatases, CeGLC-7α and CeGLC-7β, abolishes the restricted localization pattern of AIR-2. In Ceglc-7α/β(RNAi) embryos, AIR-2 is detected on the entire bivalent. Concurrently, chromosomal REC-8 is dramatically reduced and sister chromatids are separated precociously at anaphase I in Ceglc-7α/β(RNAi) embryos. We propose that AIR-2 promotes the release of chromosome cohesion via phosphorylation of REC-8 at specific chromosomal locations and that CeGLC-7α/β, directly or indirectly, antagonize AIR-2 activity
Galactic vs. Extragalactic Origin of the Peculiar Transient SCP 06F6
We study four scenarios for the SCP 06F6 transient event that was announced
recently. Some of these were previously briefly discussed as plausible models
for SCP 06F6, in particular with the claimed detection of a z=0.143
cosmological redshift of a Swan spectrum of a carbon rich envelope. We adopt
this value of z for extragalactic scenarios. We cannot rule out any of these
models, but can rank them from most to least preferred. Our favorite model is a
tidal disruption of a CO white dwarf (WD) by an intermediate-mass black hole
(IMBH). To account for the properties of the SCP 06F6 event, we have to assume
the presence of a strong disk wind that was not included in previous numerical
simulations. If the IMBH is the central BH of a galaxy, this explains the non
detection of a bright galaxy in the direction of SCP 06F6. Our second favorite
scenario is a type Ia-like SN that exploded inside the dense wind of a carbon
star. The carbon star is the donor star of the exploded WD. Our third favorite
model is a Galactic source of an asteroid that collided with a WD. Such a
scenario was discussed in the past as the source of dusty disks around WDs, but
no predictions exist regarding the appearance of such an event. Our least
favorite model is of a core collapse SN. The only way we can account for the
properties of SCP 06F6 with a core collapse SN is if we assume the occurrence
of a rare type of binary interaction.Comment: Accepted by New Astronom

Greenhouse gas emissions in Sub-Saharan Africa
Current and future carbon emissions from land-use change and energy consumption were analyzed for Sub-Saharan Africa. The energy sector analysis was based on UN energy data tapes while the land-use analysis was based on a spatially-explicit land-use model developed specifically for this project. The impacts of different energy and land-use strategies on future carbon emissions were considered. (A review of anthropogenic emissions of methane, nitrous oxides, and chlorofluorocarbons in Sub-Saharan Africa indicated that they were probably minor in both a global and a regional context. The study therefore was focused on emissions of carbon dioxide.) The land-use model predicts carbon emissions from land use change and the amount of carbon stored in vegetation (carbon inventory) on a yearly basis between 1985 and 2001. Emissions and inventory are modeled at 9000 regularly-spaced point locations in Sub-Saharan Africa using location-specific information on vegetation type, soils, climate and deforestation. Vegetation, soils, and climate information were derived from continental-scale maps while relative deforestation rates(% of forest land lost each year) were developed from country-specific forest and deforestation statistics (FAO Tropical Forest Resources Assessment for Africa, 1980). The carbon emissions under different land use strategies in Sub-Saharan Africa were analyzed by modifying deforestation rates and altering the amount of carbon stored under different land uses. A critical comparison of integral projection and matrix projection models for demographic analysis
Structured demographic models are among the most common and useful tools in population biology. However, the introduction of integral projection models (IPMs) has caused a profound shift in the way many demographic models are conceptualized. Some researchers have argued that IPMs, by explicitly representing demographic processes as continuous functions of state variables such as size, are more statistically efficient, biologically realistic, and accurate than classic matrix projection models, calling into question the usefulness of the many studies based on matrix models. Here, we evaluate how IPMs and matrix models differ, as well as the extent to which these differences matter for estimation of key model outputs, including population growth rates, sensitivity patterns, and life spans. First, we detail the steps in constructing and using each type of model. Second, we present a review of published demographic models, concentrating on size-based studies, which shows significant overlap in the way IPMs and matrix models are constructed and analyzed. Third, to assess the impact of various modeling decisions on demographic predictions, we ran a series of simulations based on size-based demographic data sets for five biologically diverse species. We found little evidence that discrete vital rate estimation is less accurate than continuous functions across a wide range of sample sizes or size classes (equivalently bin numbers or mesh points). Most model outputs quickly converged with modest class numbers (≥10), regardless of most other modeling decisions. Another surprising result was that the most commonly used method to discretize growth rates for IPM analyses can introduce substantial error into model outputs. Finally, we show that empirical sample sizes generally matter more than modeling approach for the accuracy of demographic outputs. Based on these results, we provide specific recommendations to those constructing and evaluating structured population models. Both our literature review and simulations question the treatment of IPMs as a clearly distinct modeling approach or one that is inherently more accurate than classic matrix models.
