Nuclear Matter in Intense Magnetic Field and Weak Processes

    Get PDF
We study the effect of magnetic field on the dominant neutrino emission processes in neutron stars. The processes are first calculated for the case when the magnetic field does not exceed the critical value to confine electrons to the lowest Landau state. We then consider the more important case of intense magnetic field to evaluate the direct URCA and the neutronisation processes. In order to estimate the effect we derive the composition of cold nuclear matter at high densities and in beta equilibrium, a situation appropriate for neutron stars. The hadronic interactions are incorporated through the exchange of scalar and vector mesons in the frame work of relativistic mean field theory. In addition the effects of anomalous magnetic moments of nucleons are also considered.Comment: 29 pages (LaTeX) including 7 figure

The health and well-being of Indigenous drug and alcohol workers: Results from a national Australian survey

    Get PDF
The increasing demand for alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment services among the Australian Indigenous population, complex organisational challenges and limitations, and high unemployment rates are likely to negatively impact Indigenous AOD workers\u27 health and well-being. Building the capacity of Indigenous AOD workers is vital, as they play a crucial role in the delivery of treatment services and offer essential support to their communities. A national online survey was conducted to examine organisational, workplace and individual factors that might contribute to levels of stress and well-being among workers who provide services to Indigenous clients. A total of 294 eligible surveys were completed; 184 (63%) from Indigenous and 108 (37%) from non-Indigenous AOD workers. Multiple regression models were conducted to assess the significant predictors of mental health and well-being, job satisfaction, emotional exhaustion, and turnover intention. Indigenous AOD workers typically experienced above average levels of job satisfaction and relatively low levels of emotional exhaustion. However, 1 in 10 reported high levels of emotional exhaustion, a key predictor of turnover intention. Indigenous workers also experienced significantly lower levels of mental health and well-being and greater work/family imbalance, which was a significant contributor to emotional exhaustion. The findings highlight the importance of implementing workforce development strategies that focus on achieving culturally appropriate, equitable and supportive organisational conditions for Indigenous AOD workers. Preventing or managing levels of stress, ensuring adequate and equitable salaries and benefits, and providing more opportunities for career and personal growth may increase job satisfaction and reduce turnover intention among Indigenous workers in the drug and alcohol field

Preventing Child Marriage: The Role of Strategic Actors in South Kalimantan

    Get PDF
South Kalimantan Province is the province with the highest number of child marriage cases, according to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2017 and 2019. This has resulted in various negative impacts, one of which is the high maternal mortality rate, as well as the low human development index (HDI) in the province, which is placed at the 22nd position from 34 provinces in Indonesia. This paper aims to examine various strategic actors who can prevent and reduce the practice of child marriage in South Kalimantan Province in three levels of analysis: the macro, mezzo, and micro levels. This paper seeks the relationship between the three aspects of structure, culture, and social processes at the three macro, mezzo, and micro levels, as the concept of analysis used to prevent child marriage practices from a child protection perspective and SRHR issues. This study uses a qualitative approach through in-depth interview methods to key policy makers and is supported by focus group discussions (FGD) to participants in discussions from various backgrounds, both government agencies, and non-governmental organizations concerned with the issue of child and women's protection in South Kalimantan Province.

Genetic analysis of the spindle checkpoint genes san-1, mdf-2, bub-3 and the CENP-F homologues hcp-1 and hcp-2 in Caenorhabditis elegans

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The spindle checkpoint delays the onset of anaphase until all sister chromatids are aligned properly at the metaphase plate. To investigate the role <it>san-1</it>, the MAD3 homologue, has in <it>Caenorhabditis elegans </it>embryos we used RNA interference (RNAi) to identify genes synthetic lethal with the viable <it>san-1(ok1580) </it>deletion mutant.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The <it>san-1(ok1580) </it>animal has low penetrating phenotypes including an increased incidence of males, larvae arrest, slow growth, protruding vulva, and defects in vulva morphogenesis. We found that the viability of <it>san-1(ok1580) </it>embryos is significantly reduced when HCP-1 (CENP-F homologue), MDF-1 (MAD-1 homologue), MDF-2 (MAD-2 homologue) or BUB-3 (predicted BUB-3 homologue) are reduced by RNAi. Interestingly, the viability of <it>san-1(ok1580) </it>embryos is not significantly reduced when the paralog of HCP-1, HCP-2, is reduced. The phenotype of <it>san-1(ok1580);hcp-1(RNAi) </it>embryos includes embryonic and larval lethality, abnormal organ development, and an increase in abnormal chromosome segregation (aberrant mitotic nuclei, anaphase bridging). Several of the <it>san-1(ok1580);hcp-1(RNAi) </it>animals displayed abnormal kinetochore (detected by MPM-2) and microtubule structure. The survival of <it>mdf-2(RNAi);hcp-1(RNAi) </it>embryos but not <it>bub-3(RNAi);hcp-1(RNAi) </it>embryos was also compromised. Finally, we found that <it>san-1(ok1580) </it>and <it>bub-3(RNAi)</it>, but not <it>hcp-1(RNAi) </it>embryos, were sensitive to anoxia, suggesting that like SAN-1, BUB-3 has a functional role as a spindle checkpoint protein.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Together, these data suggest that in the <it>C. elegans </it>embryo, HCP-1 interacts with a subset of the spindle checkpoint pathway. Furthermore, the fact that <it>san-1(ok1580);hcp-1(RNAi) </it>animals had a severe viability defect whereas in the <it>san-1(ok1580);hcp-2(RNAi) </it>and <it>san-1(ok1580);hcp-2(ok1757) </it>animals the viability defect was not as severe suggesting that <it>hcp-1 </it>and <it>hcp-2 </it>are not completely redundant.</p

INTRODUCTION: The word ‘Myth’ is derived from the Greek word “Mythos”, meaning the stories passed by a group of certain population having a strong impact on seeking general and dental treatment even during illness. AIM: The aim of this study was to access the prevalence of dental myths among the young population and to interpret their level of knowledge, awareness and perception. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted amongst 500 young population of age between 18-28 years between May to August 2020, COVID-19 pandemic period. A pretested validated questionnaire was formatted on Google forms and circulated in various social media platforms. The collected data was subjected to statistical analysis. RESULTS: The mean age of the study population was 22.66±2.38 years, and 59% were females and 41% were males. About 65% (325) and 56% (280) of the study subjects believed correctly that mouthwash alone will not maintain oral health and chewing gum will not clean their teeth, respectively. When asked about their responses in case of pain in oral cavity, most people 46% (230) reported they would visit a dentist and major segment of study subjects 56% (281) believed that there can be more methods for treating oral pain other than the extraction of the tooth itself.CONCLUSION: The result of this study revealed that the younger population are more aware and didn’t believe much regarding various dental myths
