The N=1 superstring as a topological field theory
By "untwisting" the construction of Berkovits and Vafa, one can see that the
N=1 superstring contains a topological twisted N=2 algebra, with central charge
c^ = 2. We discuss to what extent the superstring is actually a topological
theory.Comment: 8 Pages (LaTeX). TAUP-2155-9
The Polyakov action on the supertorus
A consistent method for obtaining a well-defined Polyakov action on the
supertorus is presented. This method uses the covariantization of derivative
operators and enables us to construct a Polyakov action which is globally
defined.Comment: 15 pages LaTe
d=2, N=2 Superconformal Symmetries and Models
We discuss the following aspects of two-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric
theories defined on compact super Riemann surfaces: parametrization of (2,0)
and (2,2) superconformal structures in terms of Beltrami coefficients and
formulation of superconformal models on such surfaces (invariant actions,
anomalies and compensating actions, Ward identities).Comment: 43 pages, late
Induced Polyakov supergravity on Riemann surfaces of higher genus
An effective action is obtained for the , induced supergravity on a
compact super Riemann surface (without boundary) of genus ,
as the general solution of the corresponding superconformal Ward identity. This
is accomplished by defining a new super integration theory on
which includes a new formulation of the super Stokes theorem and residue
calculus in the superfield formalism. Another crucial ingredient is the notion
of polydromic fields. The resulting action is shown to be well-defined and free
of singularities on \sig. As a by-product, we point out a morphism between
the diffeomorphism symmetry and holomorphic properties.Comment: LPTB 93-10, Latex file 20 page
Water Network Optimization with Wastewater Regeneration Models
The conventional water network synthesis approach greatly simplifies wastewater treatment units by using fixed recoveries, creating a gap for their applicability to industrial processes. This work describes a unifying approach combining various technologies capable of removing all the major types of contaminants through the use of more realistic models. The following improvements are made over the typical superstructure-based water network models. First, unit-specific shortcut models are developed in place of the fixed contaminant removal model to describe contaminant mass transfer in wastewater treatment units. Shortcut wastewater treatment cost functions are also incorporated into the model. In addition, uncertainty in mass load of contaminants is considered to account for the range of operating conditions. Furthermore, the superstructure is modified to accommodate realistic potential structures. We present a modified Lagrangean-based decomposition algorithm in order to solve the resulting nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem efficiently. Several examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and limitations of the algorithm for obtaining the global optimal solutions. The authors would like to acknowledge financial support from the National Science Foundation for financial support under grant CBET-1437668, the program “Estancias de movilidad en el extranjero “Jose Castillejo” para jóvenes doctores” (JC2011-0051) of the Spanish Ministerio de Educación, and from the University of Alicante (GRE11-19)
UVA/UVA1 phototherapy and PUVA photochemotherapy in connective tissue diseases and related disorders: a research based review
BACKGROUND: Broad-band UVA, long-wave UVA1 and PUVA treatment have been described as an alternative/adjunct therapeutic option in a number of inflammatory and malignant skin diseases. Nevertheless, controlled studies investigating the efficacy of UVA irradiation in connective tissue diseases and related disorders are rare. METHODS: Searching the PubMed database the current article systematically reviews established and innovative therapeutic approaches of broad-band UVA irradiation, UVA1 phototherapy and PUVA photochemotherapy in a variety of different connective tissue disorders. RESULTS: Potential pathways include immunomodulation of inflammation, induction of collagenases and initiation of apoptosis. Even though holding the risk of carcinogenesis, photoaging or UV-induced exacerbation, UVA phototherapy seems to exhibit a tolerable risk/benefit ratio at least in systemic sclerosis, localized scleroderma, extragenital lichen sclerosus et atrophicus, sclerodermoid graft-versus-host disease, lupus erythematosus and a number of sclerotic rarities. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the data retrieved from the literature, therapeutic UVA exposure seems to be effective in connective tissue diseases and related disorders. However, more controlled investigations are needed in order to establish a clear-cut catalogue of indications
Life history traits influence in gonad composition of two sympatric species of flatfish
AbstractParalichthys orbignyanus and Paralichthys patagonicus are flatfish with different life history traits, having in common the condition of breeding in seawater. Paralichthys patagonicus remain their whole life in open seawater and Paralichthys orbignyanus are sometimes found in brackish water bodies. As marine and estuarine food webs have different fatty acid (FA) compositions, the aim of this study was to characterize the gonadal maturation of P. orbignyanus and P. patagonicus females through the analysis of lipid content and FA profile in order to understand to what extent life history traits are reflected in the ovarian composition. During gonadal maturation lipid content increased and FA profiles changed in both species, but the lipid increase was greater in P. orbignyanus. The N-3FA and n-3HUFA proportions increased in both species but were higher in P. orbignyanus. The differences between the lifestyles of these species were reflected in the ovarian FA profile mainly as a result of differences in their FA metabolism, causing a greater accumulation of n-3FA and n-3HUFA in P. orbignyanus than in P. patagonicus. The higher lipid accumulation in P. orbignyanus’ ovaries could indicate that this species, feeding in brackish water bodies, has the possibility of storing more energy than P. patagonicus
