Structure of exotic three-body systems
The classification of large halos formed by two identical particles and a
core is systematically addressed according to interparticle distances. The
root-mean-square distances between the constituents are described by universal
scaling functions obtained from a renormalized zero-range model. Applications
for halo nuclei, Li and Be, and for atomic He are briefly
discussed. The generalization to four-body systems is proposed.Comment: Contribution to the International workshop "Critical Stability of
Few-Body Quantum Systems". To be published in "Few-Body Systems
The helium trimer with soft-core potentials
The helium trimer is studied using two- and three-body soft-core potentials.
Realistic helium-helium potentials present an extremely strong short-range
repulsion and support a single, very shallow, bound state. The description of
systems with more than two helium atoms is difficult due to the very large
cancellation between kinetic and potential energy. We analyze the possibility
of describing the three helium system in the ultracold regime using a gaussian
representation of a widely used realistic potential, the LM2M2 interaction.
However, in order to describe correctly the trimer ground state a three-body
force has to be added to the gaussian interaction. With this potential model
the two bound states of the trimer and the low energy scattering helium-dimer
phase shifts obtained with the LM2M2 potential are well reproduced.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Few-Body System
Single-step deposition of hexamethyldisiloxane surface gradient coatings with a high amplitude of water contact angles over a polyethylene foil
One interesting category of nano- and micro-engineered surfaces is surface gradients, which allow the controlled optimization of biointerfaces at a small scale in an extended area length. Plasma coatings offer a large diversity of functionalities at the nanoscale, accompanied by high chemical stability and adhesion on a variety of substrates at ambient temperature. Atmospheric-pressure plasma-assisted deposition could be employed for the generation of surface gradients on thermosensitive materials. In this study, a corona plasma jet is used to deposit polydimethylsiloxane/SiO2-like surface gradients on polyethylene foil by varying the O2 concentration in the discharge during the movement of the plasma source. We obtained, in a single-step approach, gradient coatings along a length of ∼10 cm, with a gradual variation of both chemistry and surface energy

These reports present the results of the 2013 Community Summer Study of the
APS Division of Particles and Fields ("Snowmass 2013") on the future program of
particle physics in the U.S. Chapter 6, on Accelerator Capabilities, discusses
the future progress of accelerator technology, including issues for high-energy
hadron and lepton colliders, high-intensity beams, electron-ion colliders, and
necessary R&D for future accelerator technologies.Comment: 26 page

NMHCs and halocarbons in Asian continental outflow during the Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) Field Campaign: Comparison with PEM-West B
We present an overview of the spatial distributions of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) and halocarbons observed over the western north Pacific as part of the NASA GTE Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE‐P) airborne field campaign (February–April 2001). The TRACE‐P data are compared with earlier measurements from the Pacific Rim during the Pacific Exploratory Mission‐West B (PEM‐West B), which took place in February–March 1994, and with emission inventory data for 2000. Despite the limited spatial and temporal data coverage inherent to airborne sampling, mean levels of the longer‐lived NMHCs (including ethane, ethyne, and benzene) were remarkably similar to our results during the PEM‐West B campaign. By comparison, mixing ratios of the fire extinguisher Halon‐1211 (CF2ClBr) increased by about 50% in the period between 1994 and 2001. Southern China (south of 35°N), and particularly the Shanghai region, appears to have been a substantial source of Halon‐1211 during TRACE‐P. Our previous analysis of the PEM‐West B data employed methyl chloroform (CH3CCl3) as a useful industrial tracer. However, regulations have reduced its emissions to the extent that its mixing ratio during TRACE‐P was only one‐third of that measured in 1994. Methyl chloroform mixing ratio “hot spots,” indicating regions downwind of continuing emissions, included outflow from the vicinity of Shanghai, China, but particularly high emission ratios relative to CO were observed close to Japan and Korea. Tetrachloroethene (C2Cl4) levels have also decreased significantly, especially north of 25°N, but this gas still remains a useful indicator of northern industrial emissions. Methyl bromide (CH3Br) levels were systematically 1–2 pptv lower from 1994 to 2001, in accord with recent reports. However, air masses that had been advected over Japan and/or South Korean port cities typically exhibited elevated levels of CH3Br. As a consequence, emissions of CH3Br from Japan and Korea calculated employing CH3Br/CO ratios and scaled to CO emission inventory estimates, were almost as large as for all of south China (south of 35°N). Total east Asian emissions of CH3Br and CH3Cl were estimated to be roughly 4.7 Gg/yr and 167 Gg/yr, respectively, in 2001

Vacuum System of the High Energy Ring of an Asymmetric B-Factory Based on Pep
The multi-ampere currents required for high luminosity operation of an asymmetric B factory leads to extremely stressing requirements on a vacuum system suitable for maintaining long beam-gas lifetimes and acceptable background levels in the detector. We present the design for a Cu alloy vacuum chamber and its associated pumping system for the 9 GeV electron storage ring of the proposed B factory based on PEP. The excellent thermal and photo-desorption properties of Cu allows handling the high proton flux in a conventional, single chamber design with distributed ion pumps. The x-ray opacity of the Cu is sufficiently high that no additional lead shielding is necessary to protect the dipoles from the intense synchrotron radiation generated by the beam. The design allows chamber commissioning in <500 hr of operation. 5 refs., 3 figs., 2 tabs
Scaling predictions for radii of weakly bound triatomic molecules
The mean-square radii of the molecules He, HeLi,
HeLi and HeNa are calculated using a three-body model
with contact interactions. They are obtained from a universal scaling function
calculated within a renormalized scheme for three particles interacting through
pairwise Dirac-delta interaction. The root-mean-square distance between two
atoms of mass in a triatomic molecule are estimated to be of de order of
, where is the dimer and the
trimer binding energies, and is a constant (varying from
to ) that depends on the ratio between and . Considering
previous estimates for the trimer energies, we also predict the sizes of
Rubidium and Sodium trimers in atomic traps.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
