    The informational advantage of specialized monitors: the case of bank examiners

    Large commercial banking firms are monitored by specialized private sector monitors and by specialized government examiners. Previous research suggests that bank exams produce little useful information that is not already reflected in market prices. In this article, we apply a new research methodology to a unique data set, and find that government exams of large national banks produce significant new information which financial markets do not fully internalize for several additional months. Our results indicate that specialized government monitors can identify value-relevant information about private firms, even if those firms are already actively followed by investors and their private-sector agents.Bank supervision ; Bank examination

    Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Weak Detonations

    Detonation of a three-dimensional reactive non-isotropic molecular crystal is modeled using molecular dynamics simulations. The detonation process is initiated by an impulse, followed by the creation of a stable fast reactive shock wave. The terminal shock velocity is independent of the initiation conditions. Further analysis shows supersonic propagation decoupled from the dynamics of the decomposed material left behind the shock front. The dependence of the shock velocity on crystal nonlinear compressibility resembles solitary behavior. These properties categorize the phenomena as a weak detonation. The dependence of the detonation wave on microscopic potential parameters was investigated. An increase in detonation velocity with the reaction exothermicity reaching a saturation value is observed. In all other respects the model crystal exhibits typical properties of a molecular crystal.Comment: 38 pages, 20 figures. Submitted to Physical Review

    The Clergy of the Orthodox and Greek Catholic Churches of Transylvania: An Attempt at Building a Database

В статье проанализирована история взаимодействия, структурные и конфессиональные особенности двух основных церквей Румынии — православной и греко-католической в XIX — начале XX в. В работе представлены историография и номинативные источники по истории духовенства двух церквей, рассмотрены особенности и условия создания источников, характеризующих развитие конфессионального ландшафта страны, выявлен их информационный потенциал. На основе проведенного исследования авторы сделали вывод о важной роли приходского духовенства в истории, культуре и развитии национального движения в Трансильвании и недостаточном его исследовании в современной историографии. Новый этап в изучении этой важнейшей для истории региона и всей страны социально-профессиональной группы авторы связывают с созданием комплексной базы данных о приходских священниках и приходах Трансильвании. В качестве основных источников для осуществления этой цели были выбраны ежегодные отчетные schematismae епархий, в которых содержались в том числе сведения о служителях церкви. В статье рассмотрены возможности комплексного использования цифровых подходов при работе с номинативными и агрегированными данными, содержащимися в источниках, созданных церквями для собственного пользования или для нужд светских властей; анализируются проблемы унификации и кодирования, связанные с использованием нескольких языков (румынского, венгерского и латыни) и конфессиональных особенностей терминологического аппарата православной и греко-католической церквей. В результате проведенного исследования выработана и предложена структура базы данных, состоящая из отдельных тематических таблиц, сформированная с учетом характера информации, содержащейся в основных используемых источниках, а также дальнейшей возможности ее пополнения другими источниками. Предложенная база данных является пополняемой, допускает дальнейшую корректировку введенных данных и проведение на ее основе компаративных исследований.This article focuses on the construction of the “Confessional Infrastructures Database” of Transylvania. It considers the history of interaction, structural and confessional peculiarities of the two major churches in Romania, i.e. the Orthodox and Greek Catholic Churches between the 19th and early 20th centuries. The authors review historical and nominative resources on the history of the clergy of the two churches and the peculiarities and conditions which accompanied the sources characterising the development of the confessional landscape of the country, revealing their information potential. The authors consider building a database containing data about parish priests and parishes themselves a new stage in studying this key social and professional group as it is essential for the history of the region and the entire country. Referring to the research carried out, the authors conclude that the parish clergy played an important part in the history, culture, and development of Transylvania and that it has not been sufficiently examined by modern historiography. The analysis refers to annual reports made by dioceses and known as schematismae which reflect data about the clergy. The authors pay close attention to the potential of digital approaches when working with statistical or nominative records found in sources produced by the Churches for their own use or that of the state. Additionally, the article focuses on issues underlying data unification and encoding which involves several languages (Romanian, Hungarian, and Latin) and the confessional peculiarities of the terminology of the Orthodox and Greek Catholic Churches. It also provides a preliminary outline of the database structure and contents formed by separate thematic tables and formed with regard to information found in the main sources of the research as well as its potential. The database can be further enlarged by other resources.     Sodium atoms and clusters on graphite: a density functional study

    Sodium atoms and clusters (N<5) on graphite (0001) are studied using density functional theory, pseudopotentials and periodic boundary conditions. A single Na atom is observed to bind at a hollow site 2.45 A above the surface with an adsorption energy of 0.51 eV. The small diffusion barrier of 0.06 eV indicates a flat potential energy surface. Increased Na coverage results in a weak adsorbate-substrate interaction, which is evident in the larger separation from the surface in the cases of Na_3, Na_4, Na_5, and the (2x2) Na overlayer. The binding is weak for Na_2, which has a full valence electron shell. The presence of substrate modifies the structures of Na_3, Na_4, and Na_5 significantly, and both Na_4 and Na_5 are distorted from planarity. The calculated formation energies suggest that clustering of atoms is energetically favorable, and that the open shell clusters (e.g. Na_3 and Na_5) can be more abundant on graphite than in the gas phase. Analysis of the lateral charge density distributions of Na and Na_3 shows a charge transfer of about 0.5 electrons in both cases.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figure

    The global field of multi-family offices: An institutionalist perspective

    We apply the notion of the organisational field to internationally operating multi-family offices. These organisations specialise on the preservation of enterprising and geographically dispersed families’ fortunes. They provide their services across generations and countries. Based on secondary data of Bloomberg’s Top 50 Family Offices, we show that they constitute a global organisational field that comprises two clusters of homogeneity. Clients may decide between two different configurations of activities, depending on their preferences regarding asset management, resource management, family management, and service architecture. The findings also reveal that multi-family offices make relatively similar value propositions all over the world. The distinctiveness of the clusters within the field is not driven by the embeddedness of the multi-family offices in different national environments or their various degrees of international experience. Rather, it is weakly affected by two out of four possible value propositions, namely the exclusiveness and the transparency of services

    Reversing Blood Flows Act through klf2a to Ensure Normal Valvulogenesis in the Developing Heart

    Heart valve anomalies are some of the most common congenital heart defects, yet neither the genetic nor the epigenetic forces guiding heart valve development are well understood. When functioning normally, mature heart valves prevent intracardiac retrograde blood flow; before valves develop, there is considerable regurgitation, resulting in reversing (or oscillatory) flows between the atrium and ventricle. As reversing flows are particularly strong stimuli to endothelial cells in culture, an attractive hypothesis is that heart valves form as a developmental response to retrograde blood flows through the maturing heart. Here, we exploit the relationship between oscillatory flow and heart rate to manipulate the amount of retrograde flow in the atrioventricular (AV) canal before and during valvulogenesis, and find that this leads to arrested valve growth. Using this manipulation, we determined that klf2a is normally expressed in the valve precursors in response to reversing flows, and is dramatically reduced by treatments that decrease such flows. Experimentally knocking down the expression of this shear-responsive gene with morpholine antisense oligonucleotides (MOs) results in dysfunctional valves. Thus, klf2a expression appears to be necessary for normal valve formation. This, together with its dependence on intracardiac hemodynamic forces, makes klf2a expression an early and reliable indicator of proper valve development. Together, these results demonstrate a critical role for reversing flows during valvulogenesis and show how relatively subtle perturbations of normal hemodynamic patterns can lead to both major alterations in gene expression and severe valve dysgenesis

    Up-regulation of endothelin type B receptors in the human internal mammary artery in culture is dependent on protein kinase C and mitogen-activated kinase signaling pathways

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Up-regulation of vascular endothelin type B (ET<sub>B</sub>) receptors is implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Culture of intact arteries has been shown to induce similar receptor alterations and has therefore been suggested as a suitable method for, <it>ex vivo</it>, in detail delineation of the regulation of endothelin receptors. We hypothesize that mitogen-activated kinases (MAPK) and protein kinase C (PKC) are involved in the regulation of endothelin ET<sub>B </sub>receptors in human internal mammary arteries.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Human internal mammary arteries were obtained during coronary artery bypass graft surgery and were studied before and after 24 hours of organ culture, using <it>in vitro </it>pharmacology, real time PCR and Western blot techniques. Sarafotoxin 6c and endothelin-1 were used to examine the endothelin ET<sub>A </sub>and ET<sub>B </sub>receptor effects, respectively. The involvement of PKC and MAPK in the endothelin receptor regulation was examined by culture in the presence of antagonists.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The endohtelin-1-induced contraction (after endothelin ET<sub>B </sub>receptor desensitization) and the endothelin ET<sub>A </sub>receptor mRNA expression levels were not altered by culture. The sarafotoxin 6c contraction, endothelin ET<sub>B </sub>receptor protein and mRNA expression levels were increased after organ culture. This increase was antagonized by; (1) PKC inhibitors (10 μM bisindolylmaleimide I and 10 μM Ro-32-0432), and (2) inhibitors of the p38, extracellular signal related kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) and C-jun terminal kinase (JNK) MAPK pathways (10 μM SB203580, 10 μM PD98059 and 10 μM SP600125, respectively).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In conclusion, PKC and MAPK seem to be involved in the up-regulation of endothelin ET<sub>B </sub>receptor expression in human internal mammary arteries. Inhibiting these intracellular signal transduction pathways may provide a future therapeutic target for hindering the development of vascular endothelin ET<sub>B </sub>receptor changes in cardiovascular disease.</p

    Taking a hard line with biotemplating: cobalt-doped magnetite magnetic nanoparticle arrays.

    Rapid advancements made in technology, and the drive towards miniaturisation, means that we require reliable, sustainable and cost effective methods of manufacturing a wide range of nanomaterials. In this bioinspired study, we take advantage of millions of years of evolution, and adapt a biomineralisation protein for surface patterning of biotemplated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). We employ soft-lithographic micro-contact printing to pattern a recombinant version of the biomineralisation protein Mms6 (derived from the magnetotactic bacterium Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1). The Mms6 attaches to gold surfaces via a cysteine residue introduced into the N-terminal region. The surface bound protein biotemplates highly uniform MNPs of magnetite onto patterned surfaces during an aqueous mineralisation reaction (with a mean diameter of 90 ± 15 nm). The simple addition of 6% cobalt to the mineralisation reaction maintains the uniformity in grain size (with a mean diameter of 84 ± 14 nm), and results in the production of MNPs with a much higher coercivity (increased from ≈156 Oe to ≈377 Oe). Biotemplating magnetic nanoparticles on patterned surfaces could form a novel, environmentally friendly route for the production of bit-patterned media, potentially the next generation of ultra-high density magnetic data storage devices. This is a simple method to fine-tune the magnetic hardness of the surface biotemplated MNPs, and could easily be adapted to biotemplate a wide range of different nanomaterials on surfaces to create a range of biologically templated devices

    Piper sarmentosum inhibits ICAM-1 and Nox4 gene expression in oxidative stress-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Aqueous extract of <it>Piper sarmentosum </it>(AEPS) is known to possess antioxidant and anti-atherosclerotic activities but the mechanism responsible for it remains unclear. In early part of atherosclerosis, nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) induces the expression of cellular adhesion molecules such as vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and E-selectin. NADPH oxidase 4 (Nox4) is the predominant source of superoxide in the endothelial cells whereas superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) are the antioxidant enzymes responsible for inactivating reactive oxygen species. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of AEPS on the gene expression of NF-κB, VCAM-1, ICAM-1, E-selectin, Nox4, SOD1, CAT and GPx in cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>HUVECs were divided into four groups:- control; treatment with 180 μM hydrogen peroxide (H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>); treatment with 150 μg/mL AEPS and concomitant treatment with AEPS and H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2 </sub>for 24 hours. Total RNA was extracted from all the groups of HUVEC using TRI reagent. Subsequently, qPCR was carried out to determine the mRNA expression of NF-κB, VCAM-1, ICAM-1, E-selectin, Nox4, SOD1, CAT and GPx. The specificity of the reactions was verified using melting curve analysis and agarose gel electrophoresis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>When stimulated with H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>, HUVECs expressed higher level of ICAM-1 (1.3-fold) and Nox4 (1.2-fold) mRNA expression. However, AEPS treatment led to a reduction in the mRNA expression of ICAM-1 (p < 0.01) and Nox4 (p < 0.05) in the H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>-induced HUVECs. AEPS also upregulated the mRNA expression of SOD1 (p < 0.05), CAT (p < 0.01) and GPx (p < 0.05) in oxidative stress-induced HUVECs. There was no significant change in the mRNA expression of VCAM-1 and E-selectin.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The expressional suppression of ICAM-1 and Nox4 and induction of antioxidant enzymes might be an important component of the vascular protective effect of AEPS.</p
