    Alfvén waves in the near-PSBL lobe: Cluster observations

    Get PDF
    Electromagnetic low-frequency waves in the magnetotail lobe close to the PSBL (Plasma Sheet Boundary Layer) are studied using the Cluster spacecraft. The lobe waves show Alfvénic properties and transport their wave energy (Poynting flux) on average toward the Earth along magnetic field lines. Most of the wave events are rich with oxygen (O+) ion plasma. The rich O+ plasma can serve to enhance the magnetic field fluctuations, resulting in a greater likelihood of observation, but it does not appear to be necessary for the generation of the waves. Taking into account the fact that all events are associated with auroral electrojet enhancements, the source of the lobe waves might be a substorm-associated instability, i.e. some instability near the reconnection site, or an ion beam-related instability in the PSBL

    We report results on the decay BDCPKB^{-} \to D_{CP}K^{-} and its charge conjugate using a data sample of 85.4 million BBˉB\bar{B} pairs recorded at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e+ee^{+}e^{-} storage ring. Ratios of branching fractions of Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored processes are determined to be B(BD0K)/B(BD0π)=0.077±0.005(stat)±0.006(sys){\cal B}(B^- \to D^0 K^-)/{\cal B}(B^- \to D^0 \pi^-)= 0.077 \pm 0.005(stat) \pm 0.006(sys), B(BD1K)/B(BD1π)=0.093±0.018(stat)±0.008(sys){\cal B}(B^- \to D_1 K^-)/{\cal B}(B^- \to D_1 \pi^-) = 0.093 \pm 0.018(stat) \pm 0.008(sys) and B(BD2K)/B(BD2π)=0.108±0.019(stat)±0.007(sys){\cal B}(B^- \to D_2 K^-)/{\cal B}(B^- \to D_2 \pi^-) = 0.108 \pm 0.019(stat) \pm 0.007(sys) where the indices 1 and 2 represent the CP=+1 and CP=-1 eigenstates of the D0D0ˉD^{0}-\bar{D^{0}} system, respectively. We find the partial-rate charge asymmetries for BDCPKB^{-} \to D_{CP}K^{-} to be A1=0.06±0.19(stat)±0.04(sys){\cal{A}}_1 = 0.06 \pm 0.19(stat) \pm 0.04(sys) and A2=0.19±0.17(stat)±0.05(sys){\cal{A}}_2 = -0.19 \pm 0.17(stat) \pm 0.05(sys).Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review

    Evidence for Direct CP Violation in B0 -> K+- pi-+ Decays

    Full text link
    We report evidence for direct CP violation in the decay B0 -> K+-pi-+ with 253/fb of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. Using 275 million B B_bar pairs we observe a B -> K+-pi-+ signal with 2140+-53 events. The measured CP violating asymmetry is Acp(K+-pi-+) = -0.101+-0.025 (stat)+-0.005 (syst), corresponding to a significance of 3.9 sigma including systematics. We also search for CP violation in the decays B+- -> K+-pi0 and B+- -> pi+-pi0. The measured CP violating asymmetries are Acp(K+-pi0) = 0.04+-0.05(stat)+-0.02(syst) and Acp(pi+-pi0) = -0.02+-0.10(stat)+-0.01(syst), corresponding to the intervals -0.05 < Acp(K+-pi0) < 0.13 and -0.18<Acp(pi+-pi0)<0.14 at 90% confidence level.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. submitted to Physical Review Letter

    Improved Measurement of the Partial-Rate CP Asymmetry in B+ -> K0pi+ and B- -> K0bar pi- Decays

    Full text link
    We report an improved measurement of the partial-rate CP asymmetry in B+ => K0pi+ and B- => K0bar pi- decays. The analysis is based on a data sample of 85 million BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ e- storage ring. We measure Acp(K0pi+-) = 0.07^{+0.09 +0.01}_{-0.08 -0.03}, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic, respectively; the corresponding 90% confidence-level interval is -0.10 < Acp(K0pi+-) < 0.22 .Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Ion cyclotron range of frequency heating experiments on the large helical device and high energy ion behavior

    Ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) heating experiments on the Large Helical Device (LHD) [O. Motojima et al. Fus. Eng. Des. 20, 3 (1993)] achieved significant advances during the third experimental campaign carried out in 1999. They showed significant results in two heating modes; these are modes of the ICH-sustained plasma with large plasma stored energy and the neutral beam injection (NBI) plasma under additional heating. A long-pulse operation of more than 1 minute was achieved at a level of 1 MW. The characteristics of the ICRF heated plasma are the same as those of the NBI heated plasma. The energy confinement time is longer than that of International Stellarator Scaling 95. Three keys to successful ICRF heating are as follows: (1) an increase in the magnetic field strength, (2) the employment of an inward shift of the magnetic axis, (3) the installation of actively cooled graphite plates along the divertor legs. Highly energetic protons accelerated by the ICRF electric field were experimentally observed in the energy range from 30 to 250 keV and the tail temperature depended on the energy balance between the wave heating and the electron drag. The transfer efficiency from the high energy ions to the bulk plasma was deduced from the increase in the energy confinement time due to the high energy ions in the lower density discharge, which agrees fairly well with the result obtained by the Monte Carlo simulation. The transfer efficiency is expected to be 95% at an electron density of more than n_e=5.0×10^19 m^?3 even in the high power heating of 10 MW. The accumulation of impurities, e.g., FeXVI and OV was not observed in high rf power and long pulse operation. The well-defined divertor intrinsic to LHD is believed to be useful in reducing the impurity influx

    We report evidence for direct CP violation in the decay B-0-->K(+)pi(-) with 253 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. Using 275x10(6) B(B) over bar pairs we observe a B-->K(+/-)pi(-/+) signal with 2140+/-53 events. The measured CP violating asymmetry is A(CP)(K(+)pi(-))=-0.101+/-0.025(stat)+/-0.005(syst), corresponding to a significance of 3.9sigma including systematics. We also search for CP violation in the decays B+-->K(+)pi(0) and B+-->pi(+)pi(0). The measured CP violating asymmetries are A(CP)(K(+)pi(0))=0.04+/-0.05(stat)+/-0.02(syst) and A(CP)(pi(+)pi(0))=-0.02+/-0.10(stat)+/-0.01(syst), corresponding to the intervals -0.05< A(CP)(K(+)pi(0))<0.13 and -0.18< A(CP)(pi(+)pi(0))<0.14 at 90% confidence level
