    P53 and MDM2 over-expression and five-year survival of kidney cancer patients undergoing radical nephrectomy - Iranian experience

    Background: Relatively little is known with certainty about the status and role of p53 or MDM2 in predicting prognosis and survival of renal cell carcinoma. The present study aimed to determine the value of P53 and MDM2 over-expression, alone and simultaneously, to predict five-year survival of patients with kidney cancer in Iran. Materials and Methods: Patients with kidney cancer referred to Hasheminejad Kidney Center between 2007 and 2009, underwent radical nephrectomy and had pathology reports of clear cell, papillary or chromophobe renal cell carcinoma were included in our cohort study. Other histological types of renal cell carcinoma were not included. The patients with missed, incomplete or poor quality paraffin blocks were also excluded. Overall ninety one patients met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. To assess the histopathological features of the tumor, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of formalin fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor samples were performed. The five-year survival was determined by the patients' medical files and telephone following-up. Results: In total, 1.1 of all samples were revealed to be positive for P53. Also, 20.8 of all samples were revealed to be positive for MDM2.The patients were all followed for 5 years. In this regard, 5-year mortality was 30.5 and thus 5-year survival was 85.3. According to the Cox proportional hazard analysis, positive P53 marker was only predictor for patients' 5-year survival that the presence of positive p53 increased the risk for long-term mortality up to 2.8 times (HR=2.798, 95CI: 1.176-6.660, P=0.020). However, the presence of MDM2 could not predict long-term mortality. In this regard, analysis by the ROC curve showed a limited role for predicting long-term survival by confirming P53 positivity (AUC=0.610, 95CI: 0.471-.750, P=0.106). The best cutoff point for P53 to predict mortality was 0.5 yielding a low sensitivity (32.0) but a high specificity (97.9). In similar analysis, measurement of MDM2 positivity could not predict mortality (AUC=0.449, 95CI: 0.316-.583, P=0.455). Conclusions: The simultaneous presence of both P53 and MDM2 markers in our population is a rare phenomenon and the presence of these markers may not predict long-term survival in patients who undergoing radical nephrectomy

    Irreversibility in response to forces acting on graphene sheets

    The amount of rippling in graphene sheets is related to the interactions with the substrate or with the suspending structure. Here, we report on an irreversibility in the response to forces that act on suspended graphene sheets. This may explain why one always observes a ripple structure on suspended graphene. We show that a compression-relaxation mechanism produces static ripples on graphene sheets and determine a peculiar temperature TcT_c, such that for T<TcT<T_c the free-energy of the rippled graphene is smaller than that of roughened graphene. We also show that TcT_c depends on the structural parameters and increases with increasing sample size.Comment: 4 pages, 4 Figure

    Ground-state and dynamical properties of two-dimensional dipolar Fermi liquids

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.We study the ground-state properties of a two-dimensional spinpolarized fluid of dipolar fermions within the Euler-Lagrange Fermi-hypemetted-chain approximation. Our method is based on the solution of a scattering Schrodinger equation for the "pair amplitude" root g(r), where g(r) is the pair distribution function. A key ingredient in our theory is the effective pair potential, which includes a bosonic term from Jastrow-Feenberg correlations and a fermionic contribution from kinetic energy and exchange, which is tailored to reproduce the Hartree-Fock limit at weak coupling. Very good agreement with recent results based on quantum Monte Carlo simulations is achieved over a wide range of coupling constants up to the liquid-to-crystal quantum phase transition. Using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and a static approximation for the effective inter-particle interactions, we calculate the dynamical density-density response function, and furthermore demonstrate that an undamped zero-sound mode exists for any value of the interaction strength, down to infinitesimally weak couplings.     The SiC/SiO Nanostructured Core-Shell as Anode Material for Lithium Ion Batteries: Synthesis and HRTEM Characterization

    The SiC/SiO nanocmposite was synthesized by a sol-gel method with a following heat-treatment process. The SiC nanoparticles were coated with SiO, as a result, a core-shell nanostructured was formed. The processed material was characterized using X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS), high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM), fourier-transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR). Data obtained in this research showed that core-shell nanoparticles of SiC/SiO with an average range size of 20- 40 (nm) may be produced through sol-gel processing. The SiC/SiO core-shell nanocomposite can act as regarded candidate for high performance anode materials for lithium ion battery applications.     Review of Fall Injuries and Related Factors in Patients Admitted to a Trauma Referral Hospital in Tehran, Iran

    Background: Falls are important causes of mortality and morbidity in urban areas and put a high burden on societies. We investigated patterns of fall traumas and related factors in a referral trauma hospital in Tehran, Iran.Methods: In this routine-data-based study, all documents of fall cases in Hazrate-Rasool hospital, Tehran, Iran, during October 2014-2015 were investigated. Information on demographic factors of patients, fall conditions and outcomes were collected. Data were analyzed by SPSS 11.5. The statistically significant level was considered ≤ 0.05.Results: Of the 307 cases, 70% were male. Median (interquartile range) age was 32 (22-51) years. Of cases, 91% were undergraduates. The mortality rate was 2.6%. Suicide attempts reported in 17 (5.5%) cases and only 2 (12%) of them were successful. Injured body organs in order of frequency were extremities, head and neck, thorax, vertebras, abdomen and pelvis. Outcome (in terms of injured body organs) was related to age and gender of patients alongside with height and reason of the fall. Falls at workplaces, in suicide attempts and among males happened for significantly higher distances. High distance falls and low GCS at admission were related to higher mortality. Majority of falls on a same level happened at home among old women.Conclusion: In our region, fall was a problem of people with low socioeconomic status. Our mortality rate is similar to the highest mortality rates in the world. Personal characteristics along with trauma-related factors are both important in the outcomes of fall cases. Safety equipment at high risk jobs is essential to prevent falls
