ANALYSIS OF THE SINGLE FUEL CONCEPT WITHIN THE EUCOM AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY

    Get PDF
Currently, U.S. Navy ships, with the exception of CVNs and submarines, utilize F-76 as their main fuel source and utilize JP-5 for aviation and support equipment. When planning for replenishment at sea, ships must plan to receive both F-76 and JP-5. Ships must also utilize separate storage and testing of the two fuels. The replenishment ships, which refuel the warships, are constrained by how much of each fuel type they can store. Being able to utilize a single fuel could simplify replenishment schedules. This research effort analyzes fuel supply and distribution capabilities during Phase II operations in the European theater when operating under the single fuel concept. This effort builds on two prior works: an unclassified study focused on the logistics benefit provided by the single fuel concept in the Pacific and a classified study (sanitized for this thesis) that explored the current logistics capability and capability gaps surrounding petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) distribution. This work determines the potential impacts of switching to a single type of fuel (JP-5) and examines what kinds of policy changes and/or asset procurements may be needed to close those gaps. This study uses the NPS-developed Fuel Usage Study Extended Demonstration (FUSED) model to evaluate our capabilities to move fuel in theater using currently available assets operating under a single fuel concept (JP-5) and compares it with the performance with two fuels: JP-5 and F-76.Lieutenant Commander, United States NavyApproved for public release. The Cannonball Formation (Paleocene, Danian) is best exposed in southwest-central North Dakota. Here, two major lithotypes, mudstone and sandstone, occur. In this area, the Cannonball can be informally subdivided into four lithologic units: lower (primarily thinly-bedded sandstone and mudstone), lower-middle (sandstone), upper-middle (mudstone), and upper (sandstone). The Cannonball is also exposed in southwestern North Dakota where it occurs as two mudstone tongues (upper and lower). During July and August, 1982, thirteen Cannonball outcrops were studied. Bivalves, along with other macrofossils, were collected quantitatively in an attempt to determine fossil species dominance. Rock samples were also collected and analyzed for textural characteristics and organic carbon content. In addition, R-mode and Q-mode cluster analyses were done using the reported occurrences of 20 bivalve species, along with other macrofossils, from 97 localities in North Dakota. Five bivalve associations are defined: Ostrea-Corbula-Corbicula, Crassostrea-Corbicula-Corbula, Isognomon, Glycymeris-Arctica, and Crassatella-Nucula associations. One sub-association, the modified Crassatella-Nucula association, and a biotic association of Ophiomoroha Crab-Driftwood-Shark Teeth, are also defined. These associations aid in the interpretation of the relationships of Cannonball lithologic units and depositional environments. The Ostrea-Corbula-Corbicula association (lower tongue) and the Crassostrea-Corbicula-Corbula association (upper tongue) contain low-diversity faunas that are characteristic of brackish-water environments associated with· lagoons. The Isognomon association, found in the lower Cannonball unit, occurs in muddy sandstone rich in organic material. The abundance of Isognomon, a large, thick-shelled, suspension-feeding bivalve, along with the lack of other macrofossils, suggests an environment where conditions were prohibitive to most organisms. A shallow-water environment associated with a tidal flat is proposed. The Glycyrneris-Arctica association, found in well-sorted sandstone in the lower-middle unit, is dominated by suspension-feeding bivalves. The presence of Glycymeris, a bivalve well adapted to high-energy conditions, indicates a nearshore, wave-agitated beach environment. The Ouhiomorpha-Crab-Driftwood-Shark Teeth association also occurs in well-sorted sandstone but is not restricted to any Cannonball unit. The association of these nearshore inhabitants suggests a beach environment where deposition took place in the vicinity of the strandline. The Grassatella-Nucula association occurs in the lower-middle unit in muddy sandstone. This association has high diversity and both deposit-feeding and suspension-feeding bivalves are present suggesting a stable, subtidal environment. The modified Crassatella-Nucula associa tion contains bivalves similar to the veritable Crassatella-Nucula association but lacks the high diversity. The modified association occurs in variable lithology and is not restricted to any Carmonball lithologic unit. It also represents a subtidal environment; however, conditions were probably not conducive to high-diversity communities. Two major transgressions and regressions occurred during Cannonball time. Based on the proposed associations, it seems likely that deposition of the brackish-water tongues in southwestern North Dakota is correlative with two major transgressive events in southwest-central North Dakota

A Dyadic Analysis of Depressive Symptoms and Harsh and Rejecting Parenting in Filipino Mothers and Fathers

    Get PDF
This study examines within-person and cross-person relations between depressive symptoms, harsh parenting, and parental rejection in low-income Filipino mothers and fathers of adolescents using an actor-partner interdependence model (APIM). Mother and father dyads (N = 81, Mage = 43.48, SD = 8.66) recruited from urban neighborhoods in the Philippines completed orally administered questionnaires on depressive symptoms, harsh parenting, and rejection. Results showed that mothers\u27 scores and fathers\u27 scores on depressive symptoms did not significantly differ and that mothers scored significantly higher than fathers on harsh parenting and rejection. Dyadic analyses using the APIM showed that the actor effect of depressive symptoms on harsh parenting was statistically significant for fathers only and that the actor effects of depressive symptoms on rejection were statistically significant for both mothers and fathers. No partner effects on harsh parenting and rejection were statistically significant. These findings contribute to the robust evidence linking parental depressive symptoms to negative parenting behaviors and highlight the need to attend to both fathers\u27 psychological health and mothers\u27 psychological health in efforts to reduce harsh and rejecting parenting behaviors among Filipino parents

‘The very wound of this ill news’:Maximilien Morillon and the impact of bad news during the early years of the Dutch Revolt, 1566–74

This article demonstrates the importance that inhabitants of the sixteenth-century Netherlands, in particular members of the elite, attached to the unpleasant effects of bad news, such as ill health, feelings of uncertainty, and discouragement. It aims to show this through the case study of the correspondence of Maximilien Morillon (1517–1586), vicar-general of Mechelen and one of the most prolific letter writers from this period. Historians have conceded that the study of news and propaganda constitutes an essential part in understanding the dynamics of early modern conflicts. Yet while they have focused on the content of reports and methods of dissemination, little attention has been paid to the perceived effects of news on its recipients. Within the emotional turn, historians have studied early modern emotional states of grief, anxiety, and depression. Yet their connection with the study of news can arguably be made more explicit. In this article I will synthesize both areas of research, demonstrating how Morillon perceived the impact of bad news during the first years of the Dutch Revolt

Diversion of juvenile delinquents in Stockton, California : a close look at definitions, attempts, and future trends

    Get PDF
Within the Stockton community there are agencies a) whose primary purpose is treatment of juvenile offenders, or b) whose auxiliary function is the treatment of juvenile offenders . One of the working assumptions of these agencies is that if the juvenile, as a first offender or minor offender, can be diverted from the juvenile courts or even from the probation office, then the juvenile can receive more effective care and treatment. Many juvenile offenses such as truancy, or incorrigibility, or psychological problems can obviously be handled better out of court and out of jail. The purpose of this project is to investigate diversionary attempts within the Stockton community and in San Joaquin County as they apply to Stockton. This project will seek to not only identify diversionary attempts and define diversion in some of its forms, but also to produce a statement regarding the potential for city and related county agencies to achieve coordination of juvenile diversionary services

Barbara Wittkopf, in a summary of her survey of ARL Libraries ["A Look at the State of BI Credit Courses in ARL-Member Libraries." Research Strategies 9 (Fall 199 1): 162- 1631 states that "there has been a positive shift away from library orientation tours and tool-specific instruction toward the development of research skills and strategies." Some academic libraries have offered a credit course in library research skills for years, while others have recently added a course to cope with the need for information literacy education. In addition to decisions about what and how to teach, the procedures for offering such a credit course vary greatly from institution to institution

Retinal Neovascular Disorders: Mouse Models for Drug Development Studies

    Get PDF
Neovascularization is a hallmark of several eye diseases leading to visual impairment, and its epidemiological impact is substantial (Lee et al. 1998). In retinal degenerative disease models, neovascularization is the process by which the choroid and/or retina become infiltrated with new blood vessels. In retinal neovascularization (RNV), sprouting retinal vessels penetrate the inner limiting membrane (ILM) and grow into the vitreous, and in some cases, grow through the avascular outer retina into the subretinal space (Campochiaro 2000). Numerous clinical and experimental observations indicate that ischemia (or hypoxia) is the driving force behind RNV (Michaelson and Steedman 1949). Occlusion of retinal vessels leading to ischemia is a feature of diseases with RNV, including diabetic retinopathy (DR) and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) (Campochiaro 2000)

The Neuro Clinic: A Pilot Model to Facilitate Student Clinical Development through In-Class Patient Experiences while Meeting Community Need

    Get PDF
Purpose: To detail the implementation and assessment of a pilot model the Neuro Clinic. This is one component of a Patient Experience Model (PEM) of embedded progressive in-class patient experiences (IcPE) in a Doctor of Physical Therapy program. The Patient Experience Model, an innovative model of experiential learning, was developed to bridge the gap between didactic coursework and clinical education, facilitate progressive patient experiences and assess developing student professional and skill competence. Methods: The Neuro Clinic was held in laboratory classroom space for six weekly sessions with consistent student: patient triads. Overwhelming patient interest indicated a need in our community for such services. With faculty and clinician oversight, second year doctor of physical therapy students conducted an initial examination, developed a plan of care and administrated goal directed activities and exercises that they documented for a medical record. Surveys were conducted with the patient volunteers, the students and the supervising clinicians. Results: All student documentation and final patient surveys indicated functional and physical improvement. Patient volunteer survey responses consistently indicated the experience met and exceeded expectations. Student survey responses for self-assessment and Clinic logistics, supervision and feedback were positive and detailed. Conclusion: The Neuro Clinic implementation gave students a way to advance tangible clinical skills and intangible social and professional skills, faculty the means to guide students while bridging the gap between didactic education and clinical application, and addressed community need. This pilot model may be useful to other healthcare programs in their quest to enhance student learning in a way that also benefits multiple constituencies. The Neuro Clinic required minimal resources and was a very positive experience for patients, students and faculty/clinicians. While advancing student development, it fulfilled a service mission congruent to the University
