We have performed an epidemiologic study on the incidence of proximal femoral
fractures in patients older than 50 years, all reviewed in our Hospital from 1990 to 1992.
We included 355 patients. Femoral neek fractures were the most frequent lesions. No significant
differences in the hospital admissions were found during all the year's seasons. The mean
age of presentation was 81 years. The incidence rate was similar to the rest of Spain, and less
than in North Europe, England and United States
Inhibition of Gastric Lipase as a Mechanism for Body Weight and Plasma Lipids Reduction in Zucker Rats Fed a Rosemary Extract Rich in Carnosic Acid
BACKGROUND: Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) extracts (REs) exhibit hepatoprotective, anti-obesity and anti-inflammatory properties and are widely used in the food industry. REs are rich in carnosic acid (CA) and carnosol which may be responsible for some of the biological activities of REs. The aim of this study was to investigate whether inhibition of lipase activity in the gut may be a mechanism by which a RE enriched in CA (40%) modulates body weight and lipids levels in a rat model of metabolic disorders and obesity. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: RE was administered for 64 days to lean (fa/+) and obese (fa/fa) female Zucker rats and body weight, food intake, feces weight and blood biochemical parameters were monitored throughout the study. Lipase activity (hydrolysis of p-nitrophenylbutyrate) was measured in the gastrointestinal tract at the end of the study and the contents of CA, carnosol and methyl carnosate were also determined. Sub-chronic administration of RE moderately reduced body weight gain in both lean and obese animals but did not affect food intake. Serum triglycerides, cholesterol and insulin levels were also markedly decreased in the lean animals supplemented with RE. Importantly, lipase activity was significantly inhibited in the stomach of the RE-supplemented animals where the highest content of intact CA and carnosol was detected. CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirm that long-term administration of RE enriched in CA moderates weight gain and improves the plasma lipids profile, primarily in the lean animals. Our data also suggest that these effects may be caused, at least in part, by a significant inhibition of gastric lipase and subsequent reduction in fat absorption

Systematic review of the effects of the intestinal microbiota on selected nutrients and non-nutrients
The systematic review demonstrates that the IM plays a major role in the breakdown and transformation of the dietary substrates examined. However, recent human data are limited with the exception of data from studies examining fibres and polyphenols. Results observed in relation with dietary substrates were not always consistent or coherent across studies and methodological limitations and differences in IM analyses made comparisons difficult. Moreover, non-digestible components likely to reach the colon are often not well defined or characterised in studies making comparisons between studies difficult if not impossible. Going forward, further rigorously controlled randomised human trials with well-defined dietary substrates and utilizing omic-based technologies to characterise and measure the IM and their functional activities will advance the field. Current evidence suggests that more detailed knowledge of the metabolic activities and interactions of the IM hold considerable promise in relation with host health
ldentification of endophyticl fungà Ãn natural populations of Lolium perenne.
XLIV Reunión CientÃfica de la Sociedad Española para el Estudio de los Pastos. 10-14 de mayo de 2004, Salamanca (España){ESP} Se han identificado diversas especies de hongos endofÃticos que infectan a Lo/ium perenne, en los pastos de las provincias de Salamanca, Zamora y León. La incidencia media de infección fue de 55,01 %. En función de su morfologÃa se identificaron tres tipos de endofitos: Tipo A con un crecimiento lento y sin conidios; Tipo B de crecimiento rápido y sin conidios; Tipo C con crecimiento rápido y con conidios. Su identificación molecular fue realizada por medio de secuencias nucleotÃdicas pertenecientes a la región ITS-l/5.8 S rRNA/lTS2;
Average infection incidence by endophyte was 55.01 %. Based on their morphology three grups of endophytes were identified. Type A slow growth without conidias; type B fast growth without conidiasj type C fast growth with conidias. Molecular indentification was done using secuences from ITS-l/r RNA/ ITS2 regian, secuences samples were grouped within: Neotyphodium sp., Epichloe festucae andEptch/oe typhina. Finally, ergovaline

Sympatric Neotyphodium and Epichloë species in natural population of Lolium perenne
Resumen del trabajo presentado en el 5th International Symposium on Neotyphodium/Grass Interactions, celebrado en Fayetteville, AR (Estados Unidos), del 23 al 26 de mayo de 2004Epichloe and Neotyphodium species show specificity for their host grasses, and usually a grass species is infected by one particular endophyte species. However, Lolium perenne is an exception, in this grass several endophyte species have been described: Epichloe typhina, Neotyphodium loUt, and LpTG-2, a heteroploid originating from a hybridization ofthe two other species (Schardl et al., 1994). In addition, wide morphological variation among asymptomatic Lolium endophytes has been observed (Christensen et al., 1991; Bony et al., 2001).
In semiarid grasslands ofwestern Spain, several grass species have been found to be infected by Epichloe and Neotyphodium endophytes. Preliminary observations in plants of 1. perenne from these ecosystems revealed the presence ofseveral types offungal endophytes (Zabalgogeazcoa et al., 2003).
The objectives of this paper were to estimate the incidence of endophyte infection rates in populations of 1. perenne from natural permanent grasslands, and to identify the fungà isolated from these plants

The gut microbiota urolithin metabotypes revisited: the human metabolism of ellagic acid is mainly determined by aging
Understanding individuals' response to dietary bioactives is crucial for personalized nutrition. We report here for the first time in a Caucasian cohort (5-90 years, n = 839) that aging is the main factor that determines the gut microbiota involved in the ellagic acid-ellagitannin metabolism (urolithin metabotypes), with potential consequences for human health. The research reported in this article has been supported by the Project AGL2015-64124-R (MINECO, Spain).
