âBad Mum Guiltâ: The Representation of âWork-Life Balanceâ in UK Womenâs Magazines
The social policy climate, labour market trends and gendered arrangements for paid and family work mean that âwork-life balanceâ remains a key social issue in the UK. Media representations of âwork-life balanceâ are a key source for the construction of gender and working motherhood. Despite evidence of gendered representations in media coverage of other social issues, little attention has been paid to the construction of work-life balance in UK women's magazines. Articles from the highest circulating UK women's magazines are analysed using a discursive approach to explicate constructions of work-life balance and working motherhood. The analysis reveals that multiple roles are constructed as a problematic choice leading to stress and guilt. Problems associated with multiple roles are constructed as individual problems, in a way that decontextualises and depoliticises them and normalises gendered assumptions and a gendered division of labour. Parallels can be drawn between this and wider discourses about women's daily lives and to the UK social policy context

Integrated molecular landscape of Parkinsonâs disease
Parkinsonâs disease is caused by a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Although a number of independent molecular pathways and processes have been associated with familial Parkinsonâs disease, a common mechanism underlying especially sporadic Parkinsonâs disease is still largely unknown. In order to gain further insight into the etiology of Parkinsonâs disease, we here conducted genetic network and literature analyses to integrate the top-ranked findings from thirteen published genome-wide association studies of Parkinsonâs disease (involving 13.094 cases and 47.148 controls) and other genes implicated in (familial) Parkinsonâs disease, into a molecular interaction landscape. The molecular Parkinsonâs disease landscape harbors four main biological processesâoxidative stress response, endosomal-lysosomal functioning, endoplasmic reticulum stress response, and immune response activationâthat interact with each other and regulate dopaminergic neuron function and death, the pathological hallmark of Parkinsonâs disease. Interestingly, lipids and lipoproteins are functionally involved in and influenced by all these processes, and affect dopaminergic neuron-specific signaling cascades. Furthermore, we validate the Parkinsonâs disease -lipid relationship by genome-wide association studies data-based polygenic risk score analyses that indicate a shared genetic risk between lipid/lipoprotein traits and Parkinsonâs disease. Taken together, our findings provide novel insights into the molecular pathways underlying the etiology of (sporadic) Parkinsonâs disease and highlight a key role for lipids and lipoproteins in Parkinsonâs disease pathogenesis, providing important clues for the development of disease-modifying treatments of Parkinsonâs disease
A cross-national study on the antecedents of workâlife balance from the fit and balance perspective
Drawing on the perceived workâfamily fit and balance perspective, this study investigates demands and resources as antecedents of workâlife balance (WLB) across four countries (New Zealand, France, Italy and Spain), so as to provide empirical cross-national evidence. Using structural equation modelling analysis on a sample of 870 full time employees, we found that work demands, hours worked and family demands were negatively related to WLB, while job autonomy and supervisor support were positively related to WLB. We also found evidence that resources (job autonomy and supervisor support) moderated the relationships between demands and workâlife balance, with high resources consistently buffering any detrimental influence of demands on WLB. Furthermore, our study identified additional predictors of WLB that were unique to some national contexts. For example, in France and Italy, overtime hours worked were negatively associated with WLB, while parental status was positively associated with WLB. 10 Years of C-K Theory: A Survey on the Academic and Industrial Impacts of a Design Theory.
The goal of our research1 was to understand what is expected today from a design theory and what types of impact such type of scientific proposition may reach. To answer these questions with a grounded approach we chosed to study the developement of C-K theory as phenomenon per se that can inform our research work. C-K theory is clearly recognized as a design theory and it is a good representative of the level of generality and abstraction of contemporary design theory. Indeed, the validity of the theory as such has already been documented (e.g. Hatchuel & Weil 2002, 2003, 2008, 2009; Kazakçi 2009; Reich et al 2010; Le Masson et al 2010; Ullah et al 2012). Instead the current work sets out to understand the dissemination and the impact of the theory in both academic and industrial fields. The data collection overlooks the literature on C-K theory in English and in French, and includes interviews and feedbacks of students and industrial partners who applied C-K methodologies and tools. This research confirms the rapid diffusion and multiples impact of C-K theory. Beyond, such study signals that there are important expectations and potential impacts of a Design Theory within the field of knowledge at large. However there are strong conditions to meet these expectations: generality, generativity, and relatedness to contemporary sciences. A similar research could be done on Nam Suh's axiomatic approach to further test these conditions. It is impossible to say what will be the next generations of Design theory but it is sure that they should progress on these directions
Business process variant analysis based on mutual fingerprints of event logs
Comparing business process variants using event logs is a common use case in process mining. Existing techniques for process variant analysis detect statistically-significant differences between variants at the level of individual entities (such as process activities) and their relationships (e.g. directly-follows relations between activities). This may lead to a proliferation of differences due to the low level of granularity in which such differences are captured. This paper presents a novel approach to detect statistically-significant differences between variants at the level of entire process traces (i.e. sequences of directly-follows relations). The cornerstone of this approach is a technique to learn a directly-follows graph called mutual fingerprint from the event logs of the two variants. A mutual fingerprint is a lossless encoding of a set of traces and their duration using discrete wavelet transformation. This structure facilitates the understanding of statistical differences along the control-flow and performance dimensions. The approach has been evaluated using real-life event logs against two baselines. Activating Generalized Fuzzy Implications from Galois Connections
This paper deals with the relation between fuzzy implications and Galois connections, trying to raise the awareness that the fuzzy implications are indispensable to generalise Formal Concept Analysis. The concrete goal of the paper is to make evident that Galois connections, which are at the heart of some of the generalizations of Formal Concept Analysis, can be interpreted as fuzzy incidents. Thus knowledge processing, discovery, exploration and visualization as well as data mining are new research areas for fuzzy implications as they are areas where Formal Concept Analysis has a niche.F.J. Quantitative Concept Analysis
Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) begins from a context, given as a binary
relation between some objects and some attributes, and derives a lattice of
concepts, where each concept is given as a set of objects and a set of
attributes, such that the first set consists of all objects that satisfy all
attributes in the second, and vice versa. Many applications, though, provide
contexts with quantitative information, telling not just whether an object
satisfies an attribute, but also quantifying this satisfaction. Contexts in
this form arise as rating matrices in recommender systems, as occurrence
matrices in text analysis, as pixel intensity matrices in digital image
processing, etc. Such applications have attracted a lot of attention, and
several numeric extensions of FCA have been proposed. We propose the framework
of proximity sets (proxets), which subsume partially ordered sets (posets) as
well as metric spaces. One feature of this approach is that it extracts from
quantified contexts quantified concepts, and thus allows full use of the
available information. Another feature is that the categorical approach allows
analyzing any universal properties that the classical FCA and the new versions
may have, and thus provides structural guidance for aligning and combining the

NK/T cell ratios associate with interleukin-2 receptor alpha chain expression and shedding in multiple sclerosis
NK/T-cell ratios predict disease activity in relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). We investigated in 50 RRMS patients whether interleukin-2 receptor alpha-chain (IL-2Rα) expression and shedding associates with NK/T-cell balance, as suggested by daclizumab-trials in RRMS. A subsample (N = 31) was genotyped for IL2RA-associated MS risk SNPs. CD56bright NK-cell/IL-17A+CD4+ T-cell ratios correlated negatively with plasma and PBMC-culture supernatant sIL-2Rα-levels [R = -0.209; p = 0.038 and R = -0.254; p = 0.012, resp.], and with CD4+ T-cell CD25 MFI [R = -0.341; p = 0.001]. While workâfamily balance has received significant academic attention, less attention has focused specifically on individuals with eldercare responsibility, a cohort which accounts for a growing segment of the labour market internationally. Taking a qualitative research approach this paper uses work/family border theory to the constraints and facilitators to reconciling care and employment for employees working full-time in Ireland. The findings highlight the significant impact that eldercare provision has on employees with regard to day-to-day work commitments. We find that while general workâlife balance policies exist within organisations, that the design and functionality of such policies are of limited value to elder caregivers. Furthermore, this paper highlights how the lack of formal HR policies around eldercare within organisations results in a reliance on supervisory discretion. We make some recommendations for organisational level strategies to address the needs of a growing number of caregivers.peer-reviewe
