Abstract: Until the beginning of the last century, chestnut has played an important role as staple food and primary wood source. In many cases it was cultivated at the border of its ecological limits where it was planted by man in place of the original and more site-adapted tree species. However, with the abandonment of the rural activities, management of chestnut forests was progressively left starting from more marginal areas, usually occupied by coppice stands. After the interruption of the traditional coppice management system (usual rotation periods of 10-25 years), natural intra- and interspecific competition dynamics have become the driving force of the stand evolution. This may lead to dramatic changes in both structure and species composition of the stands. The aim of this study is to analyse the post-cultural evolution of an abandoned chestnut coppice in the Pesio Valley (Piedmont, Italy) in order to highlight the competition among different "basic silvicultural components" of the forest using a dendroecological approach. The "basic silvicultural components" are intended as the elements defined as groups of trees of the stand that have similar features such as silviculturally relevant attributes: species (chestnut, beech, fir), origin (seed, sprout) and cultural age and function (standard/reserve, maiden, shoot, regeneration, dead tree). The mean growth curves of the components show the different fitness of each category. From a general point of view, the beech and fir components show a better competitive potential in comparison with chestnut. Among chestnut components, maidens from seeds reveal a better growth trend compared to coppice shoots and standards

Prediction of self-assembly of adenosine analogues in solution: a computational approach validated by isothermal titration calorimetry.

The recent discovery of the role of adenosine-analogues as neuroprotectants and cognitive enhancers has sparked interest in these molecules as new therapeutic drugs. Understanding the behavior of these molecules in solution and predicting their ability to self-assemble will accelerate new discoveries. We propose a computational approach based on density functional theory, a polarizable continuum solvation description of the aqueous environment, and an efficient search procedure to probe the potential energy surface, to determine the structure and thermodynamic stability of molecular clusters of adenosine analogues in solution, using caffeine as a model. The method was validated as a tool for the prediction of the impact of small structural variations on self-assembly using paraxanthine. The computational results were supported by isothermal titration calorimetry experiments. The thermodynamic parameters enabled the quantification of the actual percentage of dimer present in solution as a function of concentration. The data suggest that both caffeine and paraxanthine are present at concentrations comparable to the ones found in biological samples

Biomimetic magnetic sensor for electrochemical determination of scombrotoxin in fish

This work addresses a novel, rapid and cost-effective approach for the electrochemical sensing of scombrotoxin (histamine) in fish based on magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (magnetic-MIP). The histamine magnetic-MIP was synthesized by the core-shell method using histamine as a template, and 2-vinyl pyridine as functional monomer. The magnetic-MIP was characterized by TEM, SEM, and confocal microscopy. Additionally, the binding capacity of magnetic-MIP towards histamine was investigated and compared with magnetic non-molecularly imprinted polymer (magnetic-NIP). This biomimetic material merged the advantages of MIPs and magnetic particles (MPs), including low cost of production, stability, high binding capacity and can be easily separated by the aid of a permanent magnet. The magnetic-MIP was integrated into magneto-actuated electrodes for the direct electrochemical detection of histamine preconcentrated from fish samples. The results revealed that this approach succeeded in the preconcentration and determination of histamine with a LOD as low as 1.6 × 10−6 mg L−1, much lower than the index for fish spoilage (50 mg kg−1) accordingly to the legislation. Furthermore, the analytical performance was validated for the determination of histamine in scombroid fish samples with recovery values ranging from 96.8 to 102.0 %, confirm so it can be applied easily for routine food examination.Fil: Hassan, Amal H. Boschi di neoformazione in Italia: approfondimenti conoscitivi e orientamenti gestionali

    Get PDF
