Undercooling of materials during solidification in space
The theoretical and actual effect of undercooling on molten materials below the equilibrium solid us temperature was studied. Materials in the categories of pure metals, alloys, and compounds were examined: their commercial and scientific value and past experience in their undercooling were considered. The material properties influencing undercooling behavior are reviewed, specified, and categorized. The effects of gravity and its absence are investigated. It is shown that presence of heterogeneous nucleating agents is the main obstacle to achieving a large degree of undercooling

Role of SOCS3 in POMC Neurons in metabolic and cardiovascular regulation.
Suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) is a negative regulator of leptin signaling. We previously showed that the chronic effects of leptin on blood pressure (BP) and glucose regulation are mediated by stimulation of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons. In this study, we examined the importance of endogenous SOCS3 in POMC neurons in control of metabolic and cardiovascular function and potential sex differences. Male and female SOCS3flox/flox/POMC-Cre mice in which SOCS3 was selectively deleted in POMC neurons and control SOCS3flox/flox mice were studied during a control diet (CD) or high fat diet (HFD) and during chronic leptin infusion. On CD, male and female SOCS3flox/flox/POMC-Cre mice were lighter in body weight despite similar food intake compared to control mice. Male SOCS3flox/flox/POMC-Cre mice exhibited increased energy expenditure. BP and heart rate were similar in male and female SOCS3flox/flox/POMC-Cre and control mice on CD. On a HFD, male and female SOCS3flox/flox/POMC-Cre mice showed attenuated weight gain. Female SOCS3flox/flox/POMC-Cre mice exhibited greater HFD-induced elevations in baseline BP and BP responses to air jet stress test compared to control mice. Chronic leptin infusion produced similar responses in all groups for food intake, body weight, oxygen consumption, blood glucose, BP and heart rate. Thus, SOCS3 deficiency in POMC neurons influences body weight regulation in CD and HFD and differentially affects BP and energy balance in a sex specific manner, but does not amplify the dietary, glycemic or cardiovascular effects of leptin

Coherent radiation from neutral molecules moving above a grating
We predict and study the quantum-electrodynamical effect of parametric
self-induced excitation of a molecule moving above the dielectric or conducting
medium with periodic grating. In this case the radiation reaction force
modulates the molecular transition frequency which results in a parametric
instability of dipole oscillations even from the level of quantum or thermal
fluctuations. The present mechanism of instability of electrically neutral
molecules is different from that of the well-known Smith-Purcell and transition
radiation in which a moving charge and its oscillating image create an
oscillating dipole.
We show that parametrically excited molecular bunches can produce an easily
detectable coherent radiation flux of up to a microwatt.Comment: 4 page
IV sotalol use in pediatric and congenital heart patients: A multicenter registry study
Background There is limited information regarding the clinical use and effectiveness of IV sotalol in pediatric patients and patients with congenital heart disease, including those with severe myocardial dysfunction. A multicenter registry study was designed to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and dosing of IV sotalol. Methods and Results A total of 85 patients (age 1 day-36 years) received IV sotalol, of whom 45 (53%) had additional congenital cardiac diagnoses and 4 (5%) were greater than 18 years of age. In 79 patients (93%), IV sotalol was used to treat supraventricular tachycardia and 4 (5%) received it to treat ventricular arrhythmias. Severely decreased cardiac function by echocardiography was seen before IV sotalol in 7 (9%). The average dose was 1 mg/kg (range 0.5-1.8 mg/kg/dose) over a median of 60 minutes (range 30-300 minutes). Successful arrhythmia termination occurred in 31 patients (49%, 95% CI [37%-62%]) with improvement in rhythm control defined as rate reduction permitting overdrive pacing in an additional 18 patients (30%, 95% CI [19%-41%]). Eleven patients (16%) had significant QTc prolongation to \u3e465 milliseconds after the infusion, with 3 (4%) to \u3e500 milliseconds. There were 2 patients (2%) for whom the infusion was terminated early. Conclusions IV sotalol was safe and effective for termination or improvement of tachyarrhythmias in 79% of pediatric patients and patients with congenital heart disease, including those with severely depressed cardiac function. The most common dose, for both acute and maintenance dosing, was 1 mg/kg over ~60 minutes with rare serious complications
