    From phonetics to phonology : The emergence of first words in Italian

    This study assesses the extent of phonetic continuity between babble and words in four Italian children followed longitudinally from 0; 9 or 0; 10 to 2;0-two with relatively rapid and two with slower lexical growth. Prelinguistic phonetic characteristics, including both (a) consistent use of specific consonants and (b) age of onset and extent of consonant variegation in babble, are found to predict rate of lexical advance and to relate to the form of the early words. In addition, each child's lexical profile is analyzed to test the hypothesis of non-linearity in phonological development. All of the children show the expected pattern of phonological advance: 'Relatively accurate first word production is followed by lexical expansion, characterized by a decrease in accuracy and an increase of similarity between word forms. We interpret such a profile as reflecting the emergence of word templates, a first step in phonological organization

    Recycled polycarbonate and polycarbonate/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene feedstocks for circular economy product applications with fused granular fabrication-based additive manufacturing

    Distributed recycling and additive manufacturing (DRAM) holds enormous promise for enabling a circular economy. Most DRAM studies have focused on single thermoplastic waste stream. This study takes three paths forward from the previous literature: 1) expanding DRAM into high-performance polycarbonate/ acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC/ABS) blends, 2) extending PC/ABS blend research into both recycled materials and into direct fused granular fabrication (FGF) 3-D printing and 3) demonstrating the potential of using recycled PC/ABS feedstocks for new applications in circular economy contexts. A commercial open source large-format FGF 3-D printer was modified and used to assess the different printability and accuracy of recycled PC and PC/ABS. The mechanical properties (tensile and impact) following the ASTM D638 and D6110–18 standards were quantified. A weather simulation test (ASTM D5071–06) was performed to assess outdoor performance. Finally, two applications in sporting goods and furniture were demonstrated. In general, better printability was achieved with recycled PC/ABS compared to recycled PC, as well as good dimensional accuracy at printing speeds of 30 and 40 mm/s. Minimal qualitative differences and discoloration were visible on the samples after accelerated weather exposure, with results in accordance with the state-of-the-art. The rPC/ABS results from tensile tests show similar values to those of rPC for elastic modulus (2.1 ± 0.1 GPa), tensile strength (41.6 ± 6.3 MPA), and elongation at break (2.8 ± 0.9%), which are also comparable with previous studied virgin 3-D printed filaments. Similarly, impact energy (115.78 ± 24.40 kJ/m2) and resistance values (810.36 ± 165.77 J/m) are comparable in the two tested formulations, reaching similar results compared to FFF 3-D printed filaments, as well as virgin materials for injection molding. Finally, the two demonstration products in the sporting goods and furniture sectors were successfully fabricated with rPC/ABS, achieving complex patterns and good printing speeds for recycled feedstocks. It is concluded rPC/ABS blends represent a potential high-performance feedstock for DRAM, validating its use in direct FGF 3-D printing systems and potential applications for a circular economy

    Dietary interventions for adults with chronic kidney disease

    Background: Dietary changes are routinely recommended in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on the basis of randomised evidence in the general population and non-randomised studies in CKD that suggest certain healthy eating patterns may prevent cardiovascular events and lower mortality. People who have kidney disease have prioritised dietary modifications as an important treatment uncertainty. Objectives: This review evaluated the benefits and harms of dietary interventions among adults with CKD including people with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) treated with dialysis or kidney transplantation. Search methods: We searched the Cochrane Kidney and Transplant Specialised Register (up to 31 January 2017) through contact with the Information Specialist using search terms relevant to this review. Studies contained in the Specialised Register are identified through search strategies specifically designed for CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and EMBASE; handsearching conference proceedings; and searching the International Clinical Trials Register (ICTRP) Search Portal and ClinicalTrials.gov. Selection criteria: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-randomised RCTs of dietary interventions versus other dietary interventions, lifestyle advice, or standard care assessing mortality, cardiovascular events, health-related quality of life, and biochemical, anthropomorphic, and nutritional outcomes among people with CKD. Data collection and analysis: Two authors independently screened studies for inclusion and extracted data. Results were summarised as risk ratios (RR) for dichotomous outcomes or mean differences (MD) or standardised MD (SMD) for continuous outcomes, with 95% confidence intervals (CI) or in descriptive format when meta-analysis was not possible. Confidence in the evidence was assessed using GRADE. Main results: We included 17 studies involving 1639 people with CKD. Three studies enrolled 341 people treated with dialysis, four studies enrolled 168 kidney transplant recipients, and 10 studies enrolled 1130 people with CKD stages 1 to 5. Eleven studies (900 people) evaluated dietary counselling with or without lifestyle advice and six evaluated dietary patterns (739 people), including one study (191 people) of a carbohydrate-restricted low-iron, polyphenol enriched diet, two studies (181 people) of increased fruit and vegetable intake, two studies (355 people) of a Mediterranean diet and one study (12 people) of a high protein/low carbohydrate diet. Risks of bias in the included studies were generally high or unclear, lowering confidence in the results. Participants were followed up for a median of 12 months (range 1 to 46.8 months). Studies were not designed to examine all-cause mortality or cardiovascular events. In very-low quality evidence, dietary interventions had uncertain effects on all-cause mortality or ESKD. In absolute terms, dietary interventions may prevent one person in every 3000 treated for one year avoiding ESKD, although the certainty in this effect was very low. Across all 17 studies, outcome data for cardiovascular events were sparse. Dietary interventions in low quality evidence were associated with a higher health-related quality of life (2 studies, 119 people: MD in SF-36 score 11.46, 95% CI 7.73 to 15.18; I = 0%). Adverse events were generally not reported. Dietary interventions lowered systolic blood pressure (3 studies, 167 people: MD -9.26 mm Hg, 95% CI -13.48 to -5.04; I = 80%) and diastolic blood pressure (2 studies, 95 people: MD -8.95, 95% CI -10.69 to -7.21; I = 0%) compared to a control diet. Dietary interventions were associated with a higher estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (5 studies, 219 people: SMD 1.08; 95% CI 0.26 to 1.97; I = 88%) and serum albumin levels (6 studies, 541 people: MD 0.16 g/dL, 95% CI 0.07 to 0.24; I = 26%). A Mediterranean diet lowered serum LDL cholesterol levels (1 study, 40 people: MD -1.00 mmol/L, 95% CI -1.56 to -0.44). Authors' conclusions: Dietary interventions have uncertain effects on mortality, cardiovascular events and ESKD among people with CKD as these outcomes were rarely measured or reported. Dietary interventions may increase health-related quality of life, eGFR, and serum albumin, and lower blood pressure and serum cholesterol levels. Based on stakeholder prioritisation of dietary research in the setting of CKD and preliminary evidence of beneficial effects on risks factors for clinical outcomes, large-scale pragmatic RCTs to test the effects of dietary interventions on patient outcomes are required

    Prevalence of Abnormal Systemic Hemodynamics in Veterans with and without Spinal Cord Injury

    Advances in the clinical management of patients with acute and chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) have contributed to extended life expectancies; however longevity in those with SCI remains below that of the general population.(1) Reduced longevity in the SCI population has been attributed to increased incidence of age-associated chronic illnesses,(2) premature cardiovascular aging,(3) and increased prevalence of heart disease, stroke (4) and diabetes mellitus, (5) compared to the general population. In fact, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is now a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the SCI population, which may be amplified due to increased risk factors such as inactivity, chronic inflammation, and impairment in autonomic cardiovascular control.(6) The American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) impairment scale (AIS) is used to document remaining motor and sensory function following SCI; (7, 8) however, the degree of autonomic nervous system impairment is not considered within this classification schema.(9, 10) That said, impaired autonomic control of the cardiovascular system after SCI results in measurable changes in heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) that loosely reflect the level and completeness of SCI documented using the AIS classification, (11, 12) but may also reflect orthostatic positioning.(6, 12, 13) The impact of these changes in HR and BP on cardiovascular health and longevity is not fully appreciated in the SCI population; however, prior to identifying the consequences of these cardiovascular abnormalities, prevalence rates of HR and BP values which fall outside the expected normal range should be documented. The International Standards to Document Autonomic Function (post-SCI) initially established guidelines for the assessment of HR and BP abnormalities in 2009, (10) which was updated in 2012, but the thresholds remained consistent. (14) Specifically, bradycardia is defined as a HR ≤ 60 beats/minute (bpm) and tachycardia as a HR ≥ 100 bpm. (14) Hypotension is defined as a systolic BP (SBP) ≤ 90 mmHg and a diastolic BP (DBP) ≤ 60 mmHg; hypertension is SBP ≥ 140 and/or DBP ≥ 90 mmHg. (14) While these definitions comply with standards established in the non-SCI population, due to decentralized cardiovascular control, they may not be appropriate for use in the SCI population. In addition, relatively recent evidence has emerged which associates adverse outcomes in the general population using other HR (15, 16) and BP (17-21) thresholds. Beyond the clinical consequences of alterations in HR and BP, persons with SCI may experience loss of independence and life quality related to the inability to adequately maintain cardiovascular homeostasis; however, until we gain a better understanding of the prevalence of these abnormalities, the development and testing of effective treatment strategies will not be a priority. Therefore, the goal of this investigation was to assess HR and BP in veterans with (SCI) and without SCI (non SCI). Similar to a recent report, (6) we hypothesized that level of SCI (i.e., the higher the lesion level the greater the prevalence of abnormal HR and BP recordings) and orthostatic positioning (i.e., increased prevalence of abnormal HR and BP recordings in the seated versus the supine position) would influence the prevalence of HR and BP abnormalities. In addition, we hypothesized that the prevalence of comorbid cardiovascular medical conditions, current smoking status, age and use of prescription anti-hypertensive (anti-HTN) medications would influence the prevalence of HR and BP abnormalities in veterans with and without SCI

    Recovery transients following blocking-state voltage stress are analyzed for two types of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs, one set of devices with thick AlGaN barrier layers and another with recessed-gate geometry and ALD SiOâ‚‚ gate dielectric. Results show temperature-invariant emission processes are present in both devices. Recessed-gate devices with SiOâ‚‚ dielectrics are observed to exhibit simultaneous trapping and emission processes during post-stress recovery

    Cyanobacteria and their secondary metabolites in three freshwater reservoirs in the United Kingdom

    Background Bloom-forming cyanobacteria occur globally in aquatic environments. They produce diverse bioactive metabolites, some of which are known to be toxic. The most studied cyanobacterial toxins are microcystins, anatoxin, and cylindrospermopsin, yet more than 2000 bioactive metabolites have been identified to date. Data on the occurrence of cyanopeptides other than microcystins in surface waters are sparse. Results We used a high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry/tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS/MS) method to analyse cyanotoxin and cyanopeptide profiles in raw drinking water collected from three freshwater reservoirs in the United Kingdom. A total of 8 cyanopeptides were identified and quantified using reference standards. A further 20 cyanopeptides were identified based on a suspect-screening procedure, with class-equivalent quantification. Samples from Ingbirchworth reservoir showed the highest total cyanopeptide concentrations, reaching 5.8, 61, and 0.8 µg/L in August, September, and October, respectively. Several classes of cyanopeptides were identified with anabaenopeptins, cyanopeptolins, and microcystins dominating in September with 37%, 36%, and 26%, respectively. Samples from Tophill Low reservoir reached 2.4 µg/L in September, but remained below 0.2 µg/L in other months. Samples from Embsay reservoir did not exceed 0.1 µg/L. At Ingbirchworth and Tophill Low, the maximum chlorophyll-a concentrations of 37 µg/L and 22 µg/L, respectively, and cyanobacterial count of 6 × 10 cells/mL were observed at, or a few days after, peak cyanopeptide concentrations. These values exceed the World Health Organization's guideline levels for relatively low probability of adverse health effects, which are defined as 10 µg/L chlorophyll-a and 2 × 10 cells/mL. Conclusions This data is the first to present concentrations of anabaenopeptins, cyanopeptolins, aeruginosins, and microginins, along with icrocystins, in U.K. reservoirs. A better understanding of those cyanopeptides that are abundant in drinking water reservoirs can inform future monitoring and studies on abatement efficiency during water treatment

    Heritage-led ontologies: Digital platform for supporting the regeneration of cultural and historical sites

    The increasing application of digital technologies to cultural heritage (CH) is wide and well documented, including a variety of tools such as digital archives, online guides and HBIM repositories. Several vocabularies and ontologies were designed to order heritage data and make CH more accessible and exploitable. However, these tools have often focused on a particular dimension of CH producing high value in separate sectors (e.g. access to conservation of historic buildings and data valorisation for restoration of heritage assets) but lacking ways for adapting or replicating the model to urban complex systems. Moreover, many studies and tools show large effort in cataloguing and archiving, but less in providing tools for designing and managing. The ROCK platform, developed within the Horizon 2020 (H2020) funded project ROCK (GA 730280), addresses the need for a management and interventionoriented interoperable tool, aimed at storing, visualizing, elaborating and linking data on cultural heritage. The use of already existing ontologies was not sufficient for developing a tool to deal with the complexity of urban systems and heterogeneous data sources. Instead, a participative methodology was set in place for the development of a context-based semantic framework to define the needs and requirements of heritage-led regeneration actions
