    Coherent diffractive imaging beyond the projection approximation: Waveguiding at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths

    We study extreme-ultraviolet wave propagation within optically thick nanostructures by means of high-resolution coherent diffractive imaging using high-harmonic radiation. Exit waves from different objects are reconstructed by phase retrieval algorithms, and are shown to be dominated by waveguiding within the sample. The experiments provide a direct visualization of extreme-ultraviolet guided modes, and demonstrate that multiple scattering is a generic feature in extruded nanoscale geometries. The observations are successfully reproduced in numerical and semi-analytical simulations

    Experimental time-resolved photoemission and ab initio study of lifetimes of excited electrons in Mo and Rh

    We have studied the relaxation dynamics of optically excited electrons in molybdenum and rhodium by means of time resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy (TR-2PPE) and ab initio electron self-energy calculations performed within the GW and GW+T approximations. Both theoretical approaches reproduce qualitatively the experimentally observed trends and differences in the lifetimes of excited electrons in molybdenum and rhodium. For excitation energies exceeding the Fermi energy by more than 1 eV, the GW+T theory yields lifetimes in quantitative agreement with the experimental results. As one of the relevant mechanisms causing different excited state lifetime in Mo and Rh we identify the occupation of the 4d bands. An increasing occupation of the 4d bands results in an efficient decrease of the lifetime even for rather small excitation energies of a few 100 meV.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure

    Two mechanisms drive pronuclear migration in mouse zygotes

    A new life begins with the unification of the maternal and paternal chromosomes upon fertilization. The parental chromosomes first become enclosed in two separate pronuclei near the surface of the fertilized egg. The mechanisms that then move the pronuclei inwards for their unification are only poorly understood in mammals. Here, we report two mechanisms that act in concert to unite the parental genomes in fertilized mouse eggs. The male pronucleus assembles within the fertilization cone and is rapidly moved inwards by the flattening cone. Rab11a recruits the actin nucleation factors Spire and Formin-2 into the fertilization cone, where they locally nucleate actin and further accelerate the pronucleus inwards. In parallel, a dynamic network of microtubules assembles that slowly moves the male and female pronuclei towards the cell centre in a dynein-dependent manner. Both mechanisms are partially redundant and act in concert to unite the parental pronuclei in the zygote’s centre

    The hepatitis B x antigen anti-apoptotic effector URG7 is localized to the endoplasmic reticulum membrane

    Hepatitis B x antigen up-regulates the liver expression of URG7 that contributes to sustain chronic virus infection and to increase the risk for hepatocellular carcinoma by its anti-apoptotic activity. We have investigated the subcellular localization of URG7 expressed in HepG2 cells and determined its membrane topology by glycosylation mapping in vitro. The results demonstrate that URG7 is N-glycosylated and located to the endoplasmic reticulum membrane with an Nlumen–Ccytosol orientation. The results imply that the anti-apoptotic effect of URG7 could arise from the C-terminal cytosolic tail binding a pro-apoptotic signaling factor and retaining it to the endoplasmic reticulum membrane

    Eine Exkursion der gemeinsamen Baukommission von VDB und dbv nach Rotterdam und Umgebung

    Wenn in den vergangenen Jahren die Anforderungen an neue Bibliotheksbauten diskutiert wurden, dann fielen zumeist Begriffe wie „Lernort“ oder „Dritter Ort“. Für die bauliche Entwicklung von Bibliotheken sind dies ohne Frage wichtige Themen. Die Arbeit der gemeinsamen Baukommission von dbv und VDB verdeutlichte jedoch den Bedarf, künftig auch weitere Aspekte näher zu betrachten. Initiativ dazu reiste die gemeinsame Baukommission im Oktober 2019 mit Kolleg*innen fast aller Bundesländer in die Niederlande, um dort unterschiedliche Bibliotheksneu- und -umbauten der letzten Jahre unter jeweils verschiedenen Fragestellungen zu untersuchen

    Quasiparticle dynamics in ferromagnetic compounds of the Co-Fe and Ni-Fe systems

    We report a theoretical study of the quasiparticle lifetime and the quasiparticle mean free path caused by inelastic electron-electron scattering in ferromagnetic compounds of the Co-Fe and Ni-Fe systems. The study is based on spin-polarized calculations, which are performed within the GWGW approximation for equiatomic and Co- and Ni-rich compounds, as well as for their constituents. We mainly focus on the spin asymmetry of the quasiparticle properties, which leads to the spin-filtering effect experimentally observed in spin-dependent transport of hot electrons and holes in the systems under study. By comparing with available experimental data on the attenuation length, we estimate the contribution of the inelastic mean free path to the latter.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
