    Q-Switched UV Laser Interactions with the Human Blood in Vitro

    A Q-switched UV laser beam emitting wavelength at 355 nm with different energy densities (fluence, J/cm2) was used for shining sixty human blood samples in vitro. Absorption spectra of hemoglobin were measured for the first time for the samples that exposed to 500 laser pulses in comparison to control samples. It was found that the peak absorbance decreases as the laser fluence increases. This decrease in the peak absorption has been found to be due to the red blood cells deformation and aggregation resulting from the effect of the laser pulses. This phenomenon has been confirmed by examination of the blood cells slides after exposing to the laser radiation. Furthermore, the red blood cells (RBCs) counts were found to be decreased with increasing the laser fluence. The decrease in the RBCs after the irradiation explains the decrease in the hemoglobin absorbance and that represents additional evidence to the structural change according to the optical microscope images. The changes in hemoglobin absorbance are used in a clinically available optical oxymeters. The immediate hematology measurements of the blood samples after the exposure to the laser pulses indicate an increase in the white blood cells (WBCs) of the type basophiles. The measurements were obtained with a significant difference with the level of probability (p≤ 0.05) between the laser exposed samples and the control samples. This laser effect is also due to structural changes in the WBCs. The changes in mitochondria resulting in cells division are in a good agreement with many results in the literature for other types of laser irradiation and other types of the WBCs. The proliferation of the basophiles upon laser photolysis plays a vital role in the activation of the immune system and a consequent destruction of pathogens by these cells

    The effect of cyclic twist angle on mechanical properties for AISI 1038 medium carbon steel

    A group of 11 specimens AISI 1038 Medium carbon steel alloy fabricated according to ASTM standard D790-02 torsion test were twisted cyclically one in positive another to negative angle in range of angles (0o-50o), step 5 degrees for each specimen. The data from torsion test device help to get actual torques and shear stresses, later the specimens tested the tensile test to figure out the effects of cyclic angle of twist on mechanical properties for AISI 1038 Medium carbon steel. The results showed a good agreement between the theoretical and actual data (torque, shear stress) for specimens with positive angle of twist by the percentage: 98%, 91%, 96%, 93%, 91%, 89%, 88%, 85%, 82%, 81%, 80%. In other side the results for experimental tests showed a dangerous decrements in mechanical properties for cyclic or negative twist angles, the yield stress for reference specimen without twist angle is 490 Mpa, yield stress increased for angels (5o,10o,15o) by 1%, 3%, 6%, then decreased for angels (20o,25o,30o,35o,40o,45o) by 3%, 5%, 13%, 18%, 24% and 35% Respectively and the final specimen with 50o angle of twist had been broken torsional before tensile test as a result specimens groups consequent of the extrusion – intrusion defects concomitant from twisting load

    The microsurgical management of a brainstem compression resulted from an embolized cerebral tentorial dural arteriovenous fistula

    Intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are abnormal connections between an arterial feeder and a dural venous sinus or leptomeningeal vein with the nidus located within the dural leaflets. In this article we report an uncommon event which is a hematoma inside a dilated draining vein formed after embolization of tentorial DAVF causing pressure on the brain stem and removed surgically. A 47 years old male with a history of ventriculoperitonial (V-P) shunt 2 years ago and embolization of arteriovenous malformation 15 years ago, presented to our hospital having symptoms due to tentorial dural arteriovenous fistula (TDAVF) fed from branches of external and internal carotid arteries. Two sessions of transarterial embolization were performed with total occlusion. Six months later, he was admitted to the hospital with gait unsteadiness, swallowing difficulties and confusion. Brain MRI revealed a hyperintense heterogenous mass like a pouch from thrombosed draining veins with a localized hematoma compressing the brainstem and causing these symptoms. A small hematoma was seen and removed microsurgically. The patient was improved clinically and was discharged home after 5 days. Neurointerventionalist must be aware when deciding to occlude TDAVMs as there is a risk of venous varix formation and rupture if incompletely occluded. Surgical intervention is sometimes needed to alleviate the hazardous compression on the brain stem and other vital structures. © 202

    New Approach Measuring the Wheel/Rail Interaction Loads

    This chapter suggested new methods for monitoring the dynamic processes of rolling stock/rail interaction. This study develops a new technical solution for measuring the wheel/rail interaction forces on a significant part of the sleeper. The theoretical part of this study, using FEM, confirm the ability of piecewise continuous recording of vertical and lateral forces from the wheel/rail interaction by measuring the stresses in two sections of the rail. Also, the optimum location of strain gauges and the effective length of the measuring zone have been determined. The experimental part of this study has been carried out on the stands and the railway track to confirm the effectiveness of the method to determine the vertical and lateral wheel/rail interaction forces, increase the reliable statistical data, improve the measurement accuracy, reducing the time and cost compared with current testing methods. The developed method is recommended to determine the wheel/rail interaction forces and identify defects on the wheels when diagnosing rolling stock on operational and travel regimes

    Sugar Beet Root Storage Properties Are Unaffected by Cercospora Leaf Spot

This is the accepted manuscript version of an article which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1094/PDIS-09-22-2156-RECercospora leaf spot (CLS; causal agent Cercospora beticola Sacc.) is endemic in many sugar beet production regions due to the widespread distribution of C. beticola and the inability of current management practices to provide complete control of the disease. Roots harvested from plants with CLS, therefore, are inevitably incorporated into sugar beet root storage piles, even though the effects of CLS on root storage properties are largely unknown. Research was conducted to determine the effects of CLS on storage properties including root respiration rate, sucrose loss, invert sugar accumulation, loss in recoverable sucrose yield, and changes in sucrose loss to molasses with respect to CLS disease severity and storage duration. Roots were obtained from plants with four levels of CLS severity in each of three production years, stored at 5°C and 95% relative humidity for up to 120 days, and evaluated for storage characteristics after 30, 90 and 120 days storage. No significant or repeatable effects of CLS on root respiration rate, sucrose loss, invert sugar accumulation, loss in recoverable sucrose yield, or change in sucrose loss to molasses were detected after 30, 90 or 120 days storage regardless of the severity of CLS disease symptoms. Therefore, no evidence was found that CLS accelerates sugar beet storage losses, and it is concluded that roots harvested from plants with CLS can be stored without additional or specialized precaution, regardless of CLS symptom severity.Peer reviewe
