    Structural Transition of Li2RuO3 Induced by Molecular-Orbit Formation

    A pseudo honeycomb system Li2RuO3 exhibits a second-order-like transition at temperature T=Tc=540 K to a low-T nonmagnetic phase with a significant lattice distortion forming Ru-Ru pairs. For this system, we have calculated the band structure, using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) in both the high- and low- T phases, and found that the results of the calculation can naturally explain the insulating behavior observed in the low-T phase. The detailed characters of the Ru 4d t2g bands obtained by the tight-binding fit to the calculated dispersion curves show clear evidence that the structural transition is driven by the formation of the Ru-Ru molecular-orbits, as proposed in our previous experimental studies.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to J.     Direct evidence for ferromagnetic spin polarization in gold nanoparticles

    We report the first direct observation of ferromagnetic spin polarization of Au nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 1.9 nm using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Owing to the element selectivity of XMCD, only the gold magnetization is explored. Magnetization of gold atoms estimated by XMCD shows a good agreement with the results obtained by conventional magnetometry.     An Arabidopsis jmjC domain protein protects transcribed genes from DNA methylation at CHG sites

    Differential cytosine methylation of genes and transposons is important for maintaining integrity of plant genomes. In Arabidopsis, transposons are heavily methylated at both CG and non-CG sites, whereas the non-CG methylation is rarely found in active genes. Our previous genetic analysis suggested that a jmjC domain-containing protein IBM1 (increase in BONSAI methylation 1) prevents ectopic deposition of non-CG methylation, and this process is necessary for normal Arabidopsis development. Here, we directly determined the genomic targets of IBM1 through high-resolution genome-wide analysis of DNA methylation. The ibm1 mutation induced extensive hyper-methylation in thousands of genes. Transposons were unaffected. Notably, long transcribed genes were most severely affected. Methylation of genes is limited to CG sites in wild type, but CHG sites were also methylated in the ibm1 mutant. The ibm1-induced hyper-methylation did not depend on previously characterized components of the RNAi-based DNA methylation machinery. Our results suggest novel transcription-coupled mechanisms to direct genic methylation not only at CG but also at CHG sites. IBM1 prevents the CHG methylation in genes, but not in transposons

    A water-cooled poly Bitter magnet for a new compact hybrid magnet was designed under the fully utilization of the electric power source of 8 MW and the cooling systems installed in the High Field Laboratory for Superconducting Materials, Tohoku University. Supposing copper-silver plates with high yield strength are used, a poly Bitter magnet can be designed. The magnet consists of four axial water-cooled Bitter coils which are electrically connected in series and all of cooling water flows from the bottom tc upper side of coils.     Formation of two-dimensional weak localization in conducting Langmuir-Blodgett films

    We report the magnetotransport properties up to 7 T in the organic highly conducting Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films formed by a molecular association of the electroactive donor molecule bis(ethylendioxy)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDO-TTF) and stearic acid CH3_3(CH2_2)16_{16}COOH. We show the logarithmic decrease of dc conductivity and the negative transverse magnetoresistance at low temperature. They are interpreted in the weak localization of two-dimensional (2D) electronic system based on the homogeneous conducting layer with the molecular size thickness of BEDO-TTF. The electronic length with phase memory is given at the mesoscopic scale, which provides for the first time evidence of the 2D coherent charge transport in the conducting LB films.Comment: 5 pages, 1 Table and 5 figure

    Calibration of Super-Kamiokande Using an Electron Linac

    In order to calibrate the Super-Kamiokande experiment for solar neutrino measurements, a linear accelerator (LINAC) for electrons was installed at the detector. LINAC data were taken at various positions in the detector volume, tracking the detector response in the variables relevant to solar neutrino analysis.
