The redshift dependence of spectral index in powerful radio galaxies
We present and discuss in this paper the rest frame radio spectra (1-25 GHz) of a sample of fourteen radio galaxies at z > 2 from the newly defined MRC/1Jy complete sample of 558 radio sources. These galaxies are among the most powerful radio sources known and range in luminosity from 1028-1028.8 watt Hz-1 at 1 GHz. We find that the median rest frame spectral index of this sample of galaxies at z > 2 is significantly steeper than that of a matched luminosity sample of 3CRR galaxies which are at a much lower redshift (0.85 < z < 1.7). This indicates that spectral index correlates primarily with redshift, at least in the luminosity range considered here. The difference between the distributions of rest frame spectral curvatures for the two samples does not appear to be statistically significant. We suggest a new explanation for the steeper spectra of radio galaxies at high redshift involving steeper electron energy spectra at injection. Electron energy spectra are expected to steepen in a first-order Fermi acceleration process, at both non-relativistic and relativistic shock fronts, as the upstream fluid velocity decreases. This may well be the case at high redshifts: the hotter and denser circum-galactic medium at high redshifts could result in slower speeds for the hotspot and the jet material behind it. The smaller sizes of radio sources at higher redshifts provide support to this scenario
Long-term calorie restriction in humans is not associated with indices of delayed immunologic aging: A descriptive study.
BACKGROUND: Delayed immunologic aging is purported to be a major mechanism through which calorie restriction (CR) exerts its anti-aging effects in non-human species. However, in non-obese humans, the effect of CR on the immune system has been understudied relative to its effects on the cardiometabolic system. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether CR is associated with delayed immunologic aging in non-obese humans. METHODS: We tested whether long-term CR practitioners (average 10.03 years of CR) evidenced decreased expression of T cell immunosenescence markers and longer immune cell telomeres compared to gender-, race/ethnicity-, age-, and education-matched "healthy" Body Mass Index (BMI) and "overweight"/"obese" BMI groups. RESULTS: Long-term human CR practitioners had lower BMI (p <  0.001) and fasting glucose (p <  0.001), as expected. They showed similar frequencies of pre-senescent cells (CD8+CD28- T cells and CD57 and PD-1 expressing T cells) to the comparison groups. Even after adjusting for covariates, including cytomegalovirus status, we observed shorter peripheral blood mononuclear cell telomeres in the CR group (p = 0.012) and no difference in granulocyte telomeres between groups (p = 0.42). CONCLUSIONS: We observed no clear evidence that CR as it is currently practiced in humans delays immune aging related to telomere length or T cell immunosenescent markers
The Molonglo Reference Catalog 1-Jy radio source survey IV. Optical spectroscopy of a complete quasar sample
Optical spectroscopic data are presented here for quasars from the Molonglo
Quasar Sample (MQS), which forms part of a complete survey of 1-Jy radio
sources from the Molonglo Reference Catalogue. The combination of low-frequency
selection and complete identifications means that the MQS is relatively free
from the orientation biases which affect most other quasar samples. To date,
the sample includes 105 quasars and 6 BL Lac objects, 106 of which have now
been confirmed spectroscopically. This paper presents a homogenous set of
low-resolution optical spectra for 79 MQS quasars, the majority of which have
been obtained at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Full observational details are
given and redshifts, continuum and emission-line data tabulated for all

Generation and detection of spin-orbit coupled neutron beams
Spin-orbit coupling of light has come to the fore in nano-optics and
plasmonics, and is a key ingredient of topological photonics and chiral quantum
optics. We demonstrate a basic tool for incorporating analogous effects into
neutron optics: the generation and detection of neutron beams with coupled spin
and orbital angular momentum. He neutron spin-filters are used in
conjunction with specifically oriented triangular coils to prepare neutron
beams with lattices of spin-orbit correlations, as demonstrated by their
spin-dependant intensity profiles. These correlations can be tailored to
particular applications, such as neutron studies of topological materials
Regulation of Lifespan in Drosophila by Modulation of Genes in the TOR Signaling Pathway
In many species, reducing nutrient intake without causing malnutrition extends lifespan 1, 2, 3. Like DR (dietary restriction), modulation of genes in the insulin-signaling pathway, known to alter nutrient sensing, has been shown to extend lifespan in various species 1, 2, 3, 4. In Drosophila, the target of rapamycin (TOR) and the insulin pathways have emerged as major regulators of growth and size. Hence we examined the role of TOR pathway genes in regulating lifespan by using Drosophila. We show that inhibition of TOR signaling pathway by alteration of the expression of genes in this nutrient-sensing pathway, which is conserved from yeast to human, extends lifespan in a manner that may overlap with known effects of dietary restriction on longevity. In Drosophila, TSC1 and TSC2 (tuberous sclerosis complex genes 1 and 2) act together to inhibit TOR (target of rapamycin), which mediates a signaling pathway that couples amino acid availability to S6 kinase, translation initiation, and growth [5]. We find that overexpression of dTsc1, dTsc2, or dominant-negative forms of dTOR or dS6K all cause lifespan extension. Modulation of expression in the fat is sufficient for the lifespan-extension effects. The lifespan extensions are dependent on nutritional condition, suggesting a possible link between the TOR pathway and dietary restriction
Inverse Compton X-rays from Giant Radio Galaxies at z~1
We report XMM-Newton observations of three FR II radio galaxies at redshifts
between 0.85 and 1.34, which show extended diffuse X-ray emission within the
radio lobes, likely due to inverse-Compton up-scattering of the cosmic
microwave background. Under this assumption, through spectrum-fitting together
with archival VLA radio observations, we derive an independent estimate of the
magnetic field in the radio lobes of 3C 469.1 and compare it with the
equipartition value. We find concordance between these two estimates as long as
the turnover in the energy distribution of the particles occurs at a Lorentz
factor in excess of ~ 250. We determine the total energy in relativistic
particles in the radio emitting lobes of all three sources to range between
3e59 and 8e59 erg. The nuclei of these X-ray sources are heavily-absorbed

VLA Observations of a New Population of Blazars
We present the first deep VLA radio images of flat-spectrum radio quasars
(FSRQ) with multiwavelength emission properties similar to those of BL Lacs
with synchrotron X-rays. Our observations of twenty-five of these sources show
that their radio morphologies are similar to those of other radio quasars.
However, their range of extended powers is more similar to that of BL Lacertae
objects (BL Lacs) and extends down to the low values typical of FR I radio
galaxies. Five out of our nine lobe-dominated sources have extended radio
powers in the range typical of both FR I and FR II radio galaxies, but their
extended radio structure is clearly FR II-like. Therefore, we have not yet
found a large population of radio quasars hosted by FR Is. Two thirds of our
sources have a core-dominated radio morpholgy and thus X-rays likely dominated
by the jet. We find that their ratios of radio core to total X-ray luminosity
are low and in the regime indicative of synchrotron X-rays. This result shows
that also blazars with strong emission lines can produce jets of high-energy
synchrotron emission and undermines at least in part the ``blazar sequence''
scenario which advocates that particle Compton cooling by an external radiation

Parsec-scale Magnetic-Field Structures in HEAO-1 BL Lacs
We present very long baseline interferometry polarization images of an X-ray
selected sample of BL Lacertae objects belonging to the first High Energy
Astronomy Observatory (HEAO-1) and the ROSAT-Green Bank (RGB) surveys. These
are primarily high-energy-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs) and exhibit core-jet radio
morphologies on pc-scales. They show moderately polarized jet components,
similar to those of low-energy-peaked BL Lacs (LBLs). The fractional
polarization in the unresolved cores of the HBLs is, on average, lower than in
the LBLs, while the fractional polarizations in the pc-scale jets of HBLs and
LBLs are comparable. However a difference is observed in the orientation of the
inferred jet magnetic fields -- while LBL jets are well-known to preferentially
exhibit transverse magnetic fields, the HBL jets tend to display longitudinal
magnetic fields. Although a `spine-sheath' jet velocity structure, along with
larger viewing angles for HBLs could produce the observed magnetic field
configuration, differences in other properties of LBLs and HBLs, such as their
total radio power, cannot be fully reconciled with the different-angle scenario
alone. Instead it appears that LBLs and HBLs differ intrinsically, perhaps in

Utility of Parental Mediation Model on Youth’s Problematic Online Gaming
The Parental Mediation Model PMM) was initially designed to regulate children’s attitudes towards the traditional media. In the present era, because of prevalent online media there is a need for similar regulative measures. Spending long hours on social media and playing online games increase the risks of exposure to the negative outcomes of online gaming. This paper initially applied the PMM developed by European Kids Online to (i) test the reliability and validity of this model and (ii) identify the effectiveness of this model in controlling problematic online gaming (POG). The data were collected from 592 participants comprising 296 parents and 296 students of four foreign universities, aged 16 to 22 years in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). The study found that the modified model of the five-factor PMM (Technical mediation, Monitoring mediation, Restrictive mediation, Active Mediation of Internet Safety, and Active mediation of Internet Use) functions as a predictor for mitigating POG. The findings suggest the existence of a positive relation between ‘monitoring’ and ‘restrictive’ mediation strategies and exposure to POG while Active Mediation of Internet Safety and Active mediation of Internet use were insignificant predictors. Results showed a higher utility of ‘technical’ strategies by the parents led to less POG. The findings of this study do not support the literature suggesting active mediation is more effective for reducing youth’s risky behaviour. Instead, parents need to apply more technical mediations with their children and adolescents’ Internet use to minimize the negative effects of online gaming
