Broad-band spectrophotometry of the hot Jupiter HAT-P-12b from the near-UV to the near-IR
The detection of trends or gradients in the transmission spectrum of
extrasolar planets is possible with observations at very low spectral
resolution. Transit measurements of sufficient accuracy using selected
broad-band filters allow for an initial characterization of the atmosphere of
the planet. We obtained time series photometry of 20 transit events and
analyzed them homogeneously, along with eight light curves obtained from the
literature. In total, the light curves span a range from 0.35 to 1.25 microns.
During two observing seasons over four months each, we monitored the host star
to constrain the potential influence of starspots on the derived transit
parameters. We rule out the presence of a Rayleigh slope extending over the
entire optical wavelength range, a flat spectrum is favored for HAT-P-12b with
respect to a cloud-free atmosphere model spectrum. A potential cause of such
gray absorption is the presence of a cloud layer at the probed latitudes.
Furthermore, in this work we refine the transit parameters, the ephemeris and
perform a TTV analysis in which we found no indication for an unseen companion.
The host star showed a mild non-periodic variability of up to 1%. However, no

Extrasolar Planet Transits Observed at Kitt Peak National Observatory
We obtained J-, H- and JH-band photometry of known extrasolar planet
transiting systems at the 2.1-m Kitt Peak National Observatory Telescope using
the FLAMINGOS infrared camera between October 2008 and October 2011. From the
derived lightcurves we have extracted the mid-transit times, transit depths and
transit durations for these events. The precise mid-transit times obtained help
improve the orbital periods and also constrain transit-time variations of the
systems. For most cases the published system parameters successfully accounted
for our observed lightcurves, but in some instances we derive improved
planetary radii and orbital periods. We complemented our 2.1-m infrared
observations using CCD z'-band and B-band photometry (plus two Hydrogen Alpha
filter observations) obtained with the Kitt Peak Visitor's Center telescope,
and with four H-band transits observed in October 2007 with the NSO's 1.6-m
McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope. The principal highlights of our results are: 1)
our ensemble of J-band planetary radii agree with optical radii, with the
best-fit relation being: (Rp/R*)J = 0.0017 + 0.979 (Rp/R*)optical, 2) We
observe star spot crossings during the transit of WASP-11/HAT-P-10, 3) we
detect star spot crossings by HAT-P-11b (Kepler-3b), thus confirming that the
magnetic evolution of the stellar active regions can be monitored even after
the Kepler mission has ended, and 4) we confirm a grazing transit for
HAT-P-27/WASP-40. In total we present 57 individual transits of 32 known

Experimental observation of the bifurcation dynamics of an intrinsic localized mode in a driven 1-D nonlinear lattice
Linear response spectra of a driven intrinsic localized mode in a
micromechanical array are measured as it approaches two fundamentally different
kinds of bifurcation points. A linear phase mode associated with this
autoresonant state softens in frequency and its amplitude grows as the upper
frequency bifurcation point is approached, similar to the soft mode kinetic
transition for a single driven Duffing resonator. A lower frequency bifurcation
point occurs when the four-wave-mixing partner of this same phase mode
intercepts the top of the extended wave branch, initiating a second kinetic

Nanoflow-nanospray mass spectrometry metabolomics reveals disruption of the urinary metabolite profiles of HIV-positive patients on combination antiretroviral therapy
Background: The use of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has substantially improved the outlook for patients with HIV infection. However, lifelong exposure to cART is also associated with adverse metabolic changes and an enhanced risk of renal, hepatic and cardiovascular dysfunction. This study investigated disruptions of the urinary metabolome of cART-exposed patients, thereby furthering our understanding of some of the side effects of pharmaceutical intervention.
Methods: HIV-positive patients were recruited from an HIV clinic and divided into cART-naive and cART-exposed groups. HIV-negative patients were recruited from a sexual health clinic. All 89 subjects were white males. Targeted biochemistry analyses were performed on plasma samples. Urine samples were collected following an overnight fast and analysed with a highly sensitive untargeted metabolomic method using nanoflow/nanospray liquid chromatography-time of flight mass spectrometry. Datasets were analysed using projection modelling to detect metabolite markers of cART exposure.
Results: Metabolites or parent compounds of all cART drugs were detected in urine extracts of all but one of the cART-exposed patients confirming adherence to the pharmaceutical regimen. Analysis of urine samples from patients on cART revealed significant reductions in selected bile acids, lipid, nucleoside and androgen metabolites. However, plasma concentrations of free or conjugated testosterone were unchanged indicating possible disruption of androgen transport or excretion in urine of patients on cART.
Conclusions: Discovery-based metabolomics reveals the potential to identify novel markers of cART intervention and metabolite disruption in HIV-positive patients, which may enable the efficacy, compliance and side effects of these pharmaceutical mixtures to be investigated
Efficient NiII2LnIII2 electrocyclization catalysts for the synthesis of trans-4,5-diaminocyclopent-2-enones from 2-furaldehyde and primary or secondary amines
A series of heterometallic coordination clusters (CCs) [NiII2LnIII2(L1)4Cl2(CH3CN)2] 2CH3CN [Ln = Y (1Y), Sm (1Sm), Eu (1Eu), Gd (1Gd), or Tb (1Tb)] were synthesized by the reaction of (E)-2-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene-amino)phenol) (H2L1) with NiCl2·6(H2O) and LnCl3·x(H2O) in the presence of Et3N at room temperature. These air-stable CCs can be obtained in very high yields from commercially available materials and are efficient catalysts for the room-temperature domino ring-opening electrocyclization synthesis of trans-4,5-diaminocyclopent-2-enones from 2-furaldehyde and primary or secondary amines under a non-inert atmosphere. Structural modification of the catalyst to achieve immobilization or photosensitivity is possible without deterioration in catalytic activity
SALL4 Expression in Gonocytes and Spermatogonial Clones of Postnatal Mouse Testes
The spermatogenic lineage is established after birth when gonocytes migrate to the basement membrane of seminiferous tubules and give rise to spermatogonial stem cells (SSC). In adults, SSCs reside within the population of undifferentiated spermatogonia (Aundiff) that expands clonally from single cells (Asingle) to form pairs (Apaired) and chains of 4, 8 and 16 Aaligned spermatogonia. Although stem cell activity is thought to reside in the population of Asingle spermatogonia, new research suggests that clone size alone does not define the stem cell pool. The mechanisms that regulate self-renewal and differentiation fate decisions are poorly understood due to limited availability of experimental tools that distinguish the products of those fate decisions. The pluripotency factor SALL4 (sal-like protein 4) is implicated in stem cell maintenance and patterning in many organs during embryonic development, but expression becomes restricted to the gonads after birth. We analyzed the expression of SALL4 in the mouse testis during the first weeks after birth and in adult seminiferous tubules. In newborn mice, the isoform SALL4B is expressed in quiescent gonocytes at postnatal day 0 (PND0) and SALL4A is upregulated at PND7 when gonocytes have colonized the basement membrane and given rise to spermatogonia. During steady-state spermatogenesis in adult testes, SALL4 expression overlapped substantially with PLZF and LIN28 in Asingle, Apaired and Aaligned spermatogonia and therefore appears to be a marker of undifferentiated spermatogonia in mice. In contrast, co-expression of SALL4 with GFRα1 and cKIT identified distinct subpopulations of Aundiff in all clone sizes that might provide clues about SSC regulation. Collectively, these results indicate that 1) SALL4 isoforms are differentially expressed at the initiation of spermatogenesis, 2) SALL4 is expressed in undifferentiated spermatogonia in adult testes and 3) SALL4 co-staining with GFRα1 and cKIT reveals distinct subpopulations of Aundiff spermatogonia that merit further investigation. © 2013 Gassei, Orwig
Hydrogen Bonding in Ionic Liquids Probed by Linear and Nonlinear Vibrational Spectroscopy
Three imidazolium-based ionic liquids of the type [Cnmim][NTf2] with varying
alkyl chain lengths (n = 1, 2 and 8) at the 1 position of the imidazolium ring
were studied applying IR, linear Raman, and multiplex CARS spectroscopy. The
focus has been on the CH-stretching region of the imidazolium ring, which is
supposed to carry information about a possible hydrogen bonding network in the
ionic liquid. The measurements are compared to calculations of the
corresponding anharmonic vibrational spectra for a cluster of [C2mim][NTf2]
consisting of four ion pairs. The results support the hypothesis of weak
hydrogen bonding involving the C(4)-H and C(5)-H groups and somewhat stronger

A Threshold Value for the Time Delay to TB Diagnosis

In many communities where TB occurs at high incidence, the major force driving the epidemic is transmission. It is plausible that the typical long delay from the onset of infectious disease to diagnosis and commencement of treatment is almost certainly the major factor contributing to the high rate of transmission. Methodology/Principal Findings. This study is confined to communities which are epidemiologically relatively isolated and which have low HIV incidence. The consequences of delays to diagnosis are analyzed and the existence of a threshold delay value is demonstrated. It is shown that unless a sufficient number of cases are detected before this threshold, the epidemic will escalate. The method used for the analysis avoids the standard computer integration of systems of differential equations since the intention is to present a line of reasoning that reveals the essential dynamics of an epidemic in an intuitively clear way that is nevertheless quantitatively realistic. Conclusions/Significance. The analysis presented here shows that typical delays to diagnosis present a major obstacle to the control of a TB epidemic. Control can be achieved by optimizing the rapid identification of TB cases together with measures to increase the threshold value. A calculated and aggressive program is therefore necessary in order to bring about a reduction in the prevalence of TB in a community by decreasing the time to diagnosis in all its ramifications. Intervention strategies to increase the threshold value relative to the time to diagnosis and which thereby decrease disease incidence are discussed. © 2007 Uys et al.Publishers' Versio
