    Brownian molecular motors driven by rotation-translation coupling

    We investigated three models of Brownian motors which convert rotational diffusion into directed translational motion by switching on and off a potential. In the first model a spatially asymmetric potential generates directed translational motion by rectifying rotational diffusion. It behaves much like a conventional flashing ratchet. The second model utilizes both rotational diffusion and drift to generate translational motion without spatial asymmetry in the potential. This second model can be driven by a combination of a Brownian motor mechanism (diffusion driven) or by powerstroke (drift driven) depending on the chosen parameters. In the third model, elements of both the Brownian motor and powerstroke mechanisms are combined by switching between three distinct states. Relevance of the model to biological motor proteins is discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Energy Efficiency Improvements in Dry Drilling with Optimised Diamond-Like Carbon Coating

    We demonstrate enhancements of performance and energy efficiency of cutting tools by deposition of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings on machine parts. DLC was deposited on steel drill bits, using plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) with the acetylene precursor diluted with argon, to produce a surface with low friction and low wear rate. Drill bit performance in dry drilling of aluminium was quantified by analysis of power consumption and swarf flow. Optimised deposition conditions produced drill bits with greatly enhanced performance over uncoated drill bits, showing a 25% reduction in swarf clogging, a 36% reduction in power consumption and a greater than five-fold increase in lifetime. Surface analysis with scanning electron microscopy shows that DLC coated drills exhibit much lower aluminium build up on the trailing shank of the drill, enhancing the anti-adhering properties of the drill and reducing heat generation during operation, resulting in the observed improvements in efficiency. Variation of drilling efficiency with argon dilution of precursor is related to changes in the microstructure of the DLC coating

    Environmental risks and challenges associated with neonicotinoid insecticides

    Neonicotinoid use has increased rapidly in recent years, with a global shift toward insecticide applications as seed coatings rather than aerial spraying. While the use of seed coatings can lessen the amount of overspray and drift, the near universal and prophylactic use of neonicotinoid seed coatings on major agricultural crops has led to widespread detections in the environment (pollen, soil, water, honey). Pollinators and aquatic insects appear to be especially susceptible to the effects of neonicotinoids with current research suggesting that chronic sublethal effects are more prevalent than acute toxicity. Meanwhile, evidence of clear and consistent yield benefits from the use of neonicotinoids remains elusive for most crops. Future decisions on neonicotinoid use will benefit from weighing crop yield benefits versus environmental impacts to nontarget organisms and considering whether there are more environmentally benign alternatives

    Investigating the Campylobacter jejuni Transcriptional Response to Host Intestinal Extracts Reveals the Involvement of a Widely Conserved Iron Uptake System.

    Campylobacter jejuni is a pathogenic bacterium that causes gastroenteritis in humans yet is a widespread commensal in wild and domestic animals, particularly poultry. Using RNA sequencing, we assessed C. jejuni transcriptional responses to medium supplemented with human fecal versus chicken cecal extracts and in extract-supplemented medium versus medium alone. C. jejuni exposed to extracts had altered expression of 40 genes related to iron uptake, metabolism, chemotaxis, energy production, and osmotic stress response. In human fecal versus chicken cecal extracts, C. jejuni displayed higher expression of genes involved in respiration (fdhTU) and in known or putative iron uptake systems (cfbpA, ceuB, chuC, and CJJ81176_1649-1655 [here designated 1649-1655]). The 1649-1655 genes and downstream overlapping gene 1656 were investigated further. Uncharacterized homologues of this system were identified in 33 diverse bacterial species representing 6 different phyla, 21 of which are associated with human disease. The 1649 and 1650 (p19) genes encode an iron transporter and a periplasmic iron binding protein, respectively; however, the role of the downstream 1651-1656 genes was unknown. A Δ1651-1656 deletion strain had an iron-sensitive phenotype, consistent with a previously characterized Δp19 mutant, and showed reduced growth in acidic medium, increased sensitivity to streptomycin, and higher resistance to H2O2 stress. In iron-restricted medium, the 1651-1656 and p19 genes were required for optimal growth when using human fecal extracts as an iron source. Collectively, this implicates a function for the 1649-1656 gene cluster in C. jejuni iron scavenging and stress survival in the human intestinal environment.IMPORTANCE Direct comparative studies of C. jejuni infection of a zoonotic commensal host and a disease-susceptible host are crucial to understanding the causes of infection outcome in humans. These studies are hampered by the lack of a disease-susceptible animal model reliably displaying a similar pathology to human campylobacteriosis. In this work, we compared the phenotypic and transcriptional responses of C. jejuni to intestinal compositions of humans (disease-susceptible host) and chickens (zoonotic host) by using human fecal and chicken cecal extracts. The mammalian gut is a complex and dynamic system containing thousands of metabolites that contribute to host health and modulate pathogen activity. We identified C. jejuni genes more highly expressed during exposure to human fecal extracts in comparison to chicken cecal extracts and differentially expressed in extracts compared with medium alone, and targeted one specific iron uptake system for further molecular, genetic, and phenotypic study

    Terminal Ligand and Packing Effects on Slow Relaxation in an Isostructural Set of [Dy(H2_{2}dapp)X2_{2}]+ Single Molecule Magnets**

    Three new dysprosium complexes with a pentadentate ligand occupying five equatorial sites differ only in the nature of the axial ligands. These help tune the relaxation properties as judged by an analysis of the AC susceptibility data. More in depth analysis by using two recently suggested fitting equations lead to similar outcomes for all three systems. As a further contribution to the relaxation pathway involving the phonon bath it is concluded that a short nitrate-nitrate interaction between molecules helps dampen the spin phonon coupling. We report three structurally related single ion Dy compounds using the pentadentate ligand 2,6-bis((E)-1-(2-(pyridin-2-yl)-hydrazineylidene)ethyl)pyridine (H2_{2}dapp) [Dy(H2_{2}dapp)(NO3_{3})2_{2}]NO3_{3} (1), [Dy(H2_{2}dapp)(OAc)2_{2}]Cl (2) and [Dy(H2_{2}dapp)(NO3_{3})2_{2}]Cl0.92_{0.92}(NO3_{3})0.08_{0.08} (3). The (H2_{2}dapp) occupies a helical twisted pentagonal equatorial arrangement with two anionic ligands in the axial positions. Further influence on the electronic and magnetic structure is provided by a closely associated counterion interacting with the central N−H group of the (H2_{2}dapp). The slow relaxation of the magnetisation shows that the anionic acetates give the greatest slowing down of the magnetisation reversal. Further influence on the relaxation properties of compounds1 and 2 is the presence of short nitrate-nitrate intermolecular ligand contact opening further lattice relaxation pathways

    J/Ѱ polarization in p+p collisions at √s = 200 GeV in STAR

    We report on a polarization measurement of inclusive J/Ń° mesons in the di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity at 2 \u3c pT \u3c 6 GeV/c in p + p collisions at √s = 200 GeV. Data were taken with the STAR detector at RHIC. The J/Ń° polarization measurement should help to distinguish between different models of the J/Ń° production mechanism since they predict different pT dependences of the J/Ń° polarization. In this analysis, J/Ń° is studied in the helicity frame. The polarization parameter λΞ measured at RHIC becomes smaller towards high pT, indicating more longitudinal J/Ń° polarization as pT increases. The result is compared with predictions of presently available models
