Institutions of (Muslim) higher education facing the future: a review

    Get PDF
Abstract: Institutions of higher learning in the Muslim world are generally underpinnned by an Islamic ethos; but, despite this, they have encountered numerous challenges from various stakeholders inside and outside their structures. This article undertakes a review of Bakar, Eric Winkel and Amranʼs co-edited conference proceedings titled Contemporary higher education needs in Muslim countries: Defining the role of Islam in 21st century higher education (2011). The reason is basically twofold: the first is that there are few English publications that have dealt with themes that the conference set itself out to explore, and the second is to assess whether the set of papers in this publication satisfactorily succeeded in adressing the themes

Minangkabau, with all of its aspects, has attracted academician to conduct researches about it. In terms of wealth, this tribe has a great detailed concepts. Comprehensive descriptions upon wealth center around the systems of kinship, power, and land ownership which is known as suku, sako and pusako. Social value of wealth is realized through communal wealth ownership. The authority of wealth is socialized by presenting tribal address to other people through the concept of sasongko. This wealth is supposed to inherit from generation to generation by means of communal authority system. However, some external systems, such as Islam, have given fundamental change which is considered too intervening. Consequently, the community cannot fully accept the change but, in other hand, do not want to reject it

The Assesment of Inclusiveness Principle of Malaysian New Economic Model: Maqashid Syar’iyyah Perspective. Objective of this article is to assess how far the principles of inclusiveness in the Economic New Model in Malaysia can fulfil the needs of maqasid syar’iyyah. The assessment is conducted through the key concepts and strategic measures of the principles of inclusiveness. This study is a qualitative which descriptive and analytical approach is used for assessing the principles of inclusiveness in the Economic New Model based on maqasid syar’iyyah perspective. The method of this study is using the literature review with references from secondary data. This study is expected to provide recommendations about the important role of maqasid syar’iyyah for maintaining the welfare of society and developing of a country, in this context for developing the Malaysian economy, in line with the vision 2020, Malaysia on par with developed countries

Simulation in development of skilled and competent operators

Modelling and Simulation helps industry to get information about how something will behave without actually testing it in real life in real industry scenario which will incur cost. One can compress the time frame, and study the behaviour of a scenario without engaging it. The use of this within engineering is well recognized. It became necessity or need in an industry. It plays various roles, from fulfilling the requirement in front end task up to furnishing the needed areas in back end task. In a petrochemical plant especially in Ethylene crackers, training operators to operate plant safely and consistent is a need. Highernumber in employees 'migration does play a role in a need of training simulator. When an operator with many years of experience left the company, he brings with himself a valuable portion of knowledge and data and training new personnel will incur money and time cost. The training of ethylene plant new operators now need to rely on senior operators experiences from different plant life cycle and will vary with different trainers. Need of simulation that can represent the real world scenario is a mandatory to give a valuable training experience and loss of billions dollars can be avoided

Corporate Governance and Earnings Conservatism in Malaysia

    Get PDF
Purpose: This paper aims to investigate whether the revised Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance in 2007 enhances earnings conservatism. In addition, the authors examine the relationship between board of directors’ expertise and conservatism. The third objective is to investigate the relationship between audit committee characteristics and earnings conservatism. Design/methodology/approach: The sample of this study is based on 3,183 firm-year observations for a period of 2004-2009. The authors hand collected the corporate governance variables, whereas the remaining data were extracted from Compustat Global. The authors used two measures of conservatism. The first is the market-based model by Basu’s (1997), and the second measure is the accrual-based measure by Ball and Shivakumar (2005). Findings: The authors find that the revision of Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance 2007 results in improving earnings conservatism. The authors find two audit committee characteristics, namely, audit committee financial expertise and independence increase earnings conservatism, after 2007. However, the authors could not find support whether board financial expertise mix affect conservatism. Research limitations/implications: This study did not consider other possible corporate governance variables that could influence earnings conservatism, as it would be a difficult task to gather them. Originality/value: The authors provide evidence on the role of corporate governance and earnings conservatism in Malaysia

Assessing Supply Chain Performance through Applying the SCOR Model

In recent years, supply chain performance measurement has received much attention from researchers and practitioners. Effective supply chain performance through supply chain antecedents such as business analytics has become a potentially valuable way of securing competitive advantage and improving supply chain performance. This study addressed the lack of the empirical studies by developing a comprehensive model to examine the effect of business analytics on supply chain performance. A quantitative methodology using a cross-sectional survey method was used to investigate the relationship between variables. Data were collected from automotive companies in Iran. The relationships between variables were examined using structural equation modelling (SEM) technique and partial least squares (PLS) software was used. The results revealed there is a significant positive relationship between business analytics and supply chain performance. The study combined resource- based theory, resource dependence theories to develop a new theoretical framework to demonstrate the importance of businesses analytics; in improving supply chain performance

A composite of cocoa (Theobroma cacao) pod husk (CPH) fiber reinforced themoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was prepared by melt-blending method followed by compression moulding. Specimens were cut from the sheets that were prepared by compression moulding. The criteria of optimization was testing the specimens by tensile test and comparing the ultimate tensile strength. The aim of this study is to optimize processing parameters and fiber loading using Taguchi approach. These four parameters were investigated in three levels each. The L9 orthogonal array was used based on the number of parameters and levels that have been selected. Furthermore ANOVA was used to determine the significance of parameters. The processing parameters chosen for this study were temperature, speed and time of processing and fiber content. The results showed that optimum values were 190°C, 40 rpm, 11min and 30% for processing temperature, processing speed, processing time and fiber content; respectively. Using ANOVA; fiber content showed the highest significance value followed by processing time. Processing temperature and speed showed no significance in the optimization of TPU/CPH

ENHANCING THE CULTURAL IDENTITY BY USING ISLAMIC ORNAMENT IN CONTEMPORARY INTERIOR DESIGN

Islamic buildings have their unique Islamic architectural style that distinguishes its identity. These buildings show habits, traditions, and Islamic ideology. Buildings have been affected by Western art because of technological development in different parts of culture, economic, arts, and sciences. Thus, they have not any cultural identity. Islamic ornament is full of aesthetic andartistic values. It has different designs can be used whether inside or outside buildings. The study aims to investigate why designers do not use this art in contemporary buildings. The study concludes that the causes, contributed to the decline to use ornament in buildings, are lack of knowledge of this art, high financial cost, and people want modern designs. The study suggestssolutions to enhance the cultural identity as follows: teaching this art in schools and universities, awareness and educational campaigns, and reformulation of this art with a modern vision
