Semantic web-based document: editing and browsing in AktiveDoc
This paper presents a tool for supporting sharing and reuse of knowledge in document creation (writing) and use (reading). Semantic Web technologies are used to support the production of ontology based annotations while the document is written. Free text annotations (comments) can be added to integrate the knowledge in the document. In addition the tool uses external services (e.g. a Semantic Web harvester) to propose relevant content to writing
user, enabling easy knowledge reuse. Similar facilities are provided for readers when their task does not coincide with the author’s one. The tool is specifically designed for Knowledge Management in organisations. In this paper we present and discuss how Semantic Web technologies are designed and integrated in the system
Identification and proposed control of helicopter transmission noise at the source
Helicopter cabin interiors require noise treatment which is expensive and adds weight. The gears inside the main power transmission are major sources of cabin noise. Work conducted by the NASA Lewis Research Center in measuring cabin interior noise and in relating the noise spectrum to the gear vibration of the Army OH-58 helicopter is described. Flight test data indicate that the planetary gear train is a major source of cabin noise and that other low frequency sources are present that could dominate the cabin noise. Companion vibration measurements were made in a transmission test stand, revealing that the single largest contributor to the transmission vibration was the spiral bevel gear mesh. The current understanding of the nature and causes of gear and transmission noise is discussed. It is believed that the kinematical errors of the gear mesh have a strong influence on that noise. The completed NASA/Army sponsored research that applies to transmission noise reduction is summarized. The continuing research program is also reviewed
Engine Conceptual Design Studies for a Hybrid Wing Body Aircraft
Worldwide concerns of air quality and climate change have made environmental protection one of the most critical issues in aviation today. NASA's current Fundamental Aeronautics research program is directed at three generations of aircraft in the near, mid and far term, with initial operating capability around 2015, 2020, and 2030, respectively. Each generation has associated goals for fuel burn, NOx, noise, and field-length reductions relative to today's aircrafts. The research for the 2020 generation is directed at enabling a hybrid wing body (HWB) aircraft to meet NASA's aggressive technology goals. This paper presents the conceptual cycle and mechanical designs of the two engine concepts, podded and embedded systems, which were proposed for a HWB cargo freighter. They are expected to offer significant benefits in noise reductions without compromising the fuel burn
Analytical and Experimental Vibration Analysis of a Faulty Gear System
A comprehensive analytical procedure was developed for predicting faults in gear transmission systems under normal operating conditions. A gear tooth fault model is developed to simulate the effects of pitting and wear on the vibration signal under normal operating conditions. The model uses changes in the gear mesh stiffness to simulate the effects of gear tooth faults. The overall dynamics of the gear transmission system is evaluated by coupling the dynamics of each individual gear-rotor system through gear mesh forces generated between each gear-rotor system and the bearing forces generated between the rotor and the gearbox structure. The predicted results were compared with experimental results obtained from a spiral bevel gear fatigue test rig at NASA Lewis Research Center. The Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) was used to give a comprehensive comparison of the predicted and experimental results. The WVD method applied to the experimental results were also compared to other fault detection techniques to verify the WVD's ability to detect the pitting damage, and to determine its relative performance. Overall results show good correlation between the experimental vibration data of the damaged test gear and the predicted vibration from the model with simulated gear tooth pitting damage. Results also verified that the WVD method can successfully detect and locate gear tooth wear and pitting damage
Ab initio many-body calculations on infinite carbon and boron-nitrogen chains
In this paper we report first-principles calculations on the ground-state
electronic structure of two infinite one-dimensional systems: (a) a chain of
carbon atoms and (b) a chain of alternating boron and nitrogen atoms. Meanfield
results were obtained using the restricted Hartree-Fock approach, while the
many-body effects were taken into account by second-order M{\o}ller-Plesset
perturbation theory and the coupled-cluster approach. The calculations were
performed using 6-31 basis sets, including the d-type polarization
functions. Both at the Hartree-Fock (HF) and the correlated levels we find that
the infinite carbon chain exhibits bond alternation with alternating single and
triple bonds, while the boron-nitrogen chain exhibits equidistant bonds. In
addition, we also performed density-functional-theory-based local density
approximation (LDA) calculations on the infinite carbon chain using the same
basis set. Our LDA results, in contradiction to our HF and correlated results,
predict a very small bond alternation. Based upon our LDA results for the
carbon chain, which are in agreement with an earlier LDA calculation
calculation [ E.J. Bylaska, J.H. Weare, and R. Kawai, Phys. Rev. B 58, R7488
(1998).], we conclude that the LDA significantly underestimates Peierls
distortion. This emphasizes that the inclusion of many-particle effects is very
important for the correct description of Peierls distortion in one-dimensional

Materials, Manufacturing and Test Development of a Composite Fan Blade Leading Edge Subcomponent for Improved Impact Resistance
Application of polymer matrix composite materials for jet engine fan blades is becoming attractive as an alternative to metallic blades; particularly for large engines where significant weight savings are recognized on moving to a composite structure. However, the weight benefit of the composite of is offset by a reduction of aerodynamic efficiency resulting from a necessary increase in blade thickness; relative to the titanium blades. Blade dimensions are largely driven by resistance to damage on bird strike. Further development of the composite material is necessary to allow composite blade designs to approximate the dimensions of a metallic fan blade. The reduction in thickness over the state of the art composite blades is expected to translate into structural weight reduction, improved aerodynamic efficiency, and therefore reduced fuel consumption. This paper presents test article design, subcomponent blade leading edge fabrication, test method development, and initial results from ballistic impact of a gelatin projectile on the leading edge of composite fan blades. The simplified test article geometry was developed to realistically simulate a blade leading edge while decreasing fabrication complexity. Impact data is presented on baseline composite blades and toughened blades; where a considerable improvement to impact resistance was recorded
Generation and matching of ontology data for the semantic web in a peer-to-peer framework
The abundance of ontology data is very crucial to the emerging semantic web. This paper proposes a framework that supports the generation of ontology data in a peer-to-peer environment. It not only enables users to convert existing structured data to ontology data aligned with given ontology schemas, but also allows them to publish new ontology data with ease. Besides ontology data generation, the common issue of data overlapping over the peers is addressed by the process of ontology data matching in the framework. This process helps turn the implicitly related data among the peers caused by overlapping into explicitly interlinked ontology data, which increases the overall quality of the ontology data. To improve matching accuracy, we explore ontology related features in the matching process. Experiments show that adding these features achieves better overall performance than using traditional features only. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007
