A new correlator in quantum spin chains
We propose a new correlator in one-dimensional quantum spin chains, the
Emptiness Formation Probability (EFP). This is a natural generalization
of the Emptiness Formation Probability (EFP), which is the probability that the
first spins of the chain are all aligned downwards. In the EFP we let
the spins in question be separated by sites. The usual EFP corresponds to
the special case when , and taking allows us to quantify non-local
correlations. We express the EFP for the anisotropic XY model in a
transverse magnetic field, a system with both critical and non-critical
regimes, in terms of a Toeplitz determinant. For the isotropic XY model we find
that the magnetic field induces an interesting length scale.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur
Full counting statistics of chaotic cavities with many open channels
Explicit formulas are obtained for all moments and for all cumulants of the
electric current through a quantum chaotic cavity attached to two ideal leads,
thus providing the full counting statistics for this type of system. The
approach is based on random matrix theory, and is valid in the limit when both
leads have many open channels. For an arbitrary number of open channels we
present the third cumulant and an example of non-linear statistics.Comment: 4 pages, no figures; v2-added references; typos correcte
The dipole anisotropy of WISE x SuperCOSMOS number counts
We probe the isotropy of the Universe with the largest all-sky photometric
redshift dataset currently available, namely WISE~~SuperCOSMOS. We
search for dipole anisotropy of galaxy number counts in multiple redshift
shells within the range, for two subsamples drawn from the
same parent catalogue. Our results show that the dipole directions are in good
agreement with most of the previous analyses in the literature, and in most
redshift bins the dipole amplitudes are well consistent with CDM-based
mocks in the cleanest sample of this catalogue. In the range, however,
we obtain a persistently large anisotropy in both subsamples of our dataset.
Overall, we report no significant evidence against the isotropy assumption in
this catalogue except for the lowest redshift ranges. The origin of the latter
discrepancy is unclear, and improved data may be needed to explain it.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. Published in MNRA
Statistics of quantum transport in chaotic cavities with broken time-reversal symmetry
The statistical properties of quantum transport through a chaotic cavity are
encoded in the traces \T={\rm Tr}(tt^\dag)^n, where is the transmission
matrix. Within the Random Matrix Theory approach, these traces are random
variables whose probability distribution depends on the symmetries of the
system. For the case of broken time-reversal symmetry, we present explicit
closed expressions for the average value and for the variance of \T for all
. In particular, this provides the charge cumulants \Q of all orders. We
also compute the moments of the conductance . All the
results obtained are exact, {\it i.e.} they are valid for arbitrary numbers of
open channels.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. v2-minor change
Performance of an Operating High Energy Physics Data Grid: D0SAR-Grid
The D0 experiment at Fermilab's Tevatron will record several petabytes of
data over the next five years in pursuing the goals of understanding nature and
searching for the origin of mass. Computing resources required to analyze these
data far exceed capabilities of any one institution. Moreover, the widely
scattered geographical distribution of D0 collaborators poses further serious
difficulties for optimal use of human and computing resources. These
difficulties will exacerbate in future high energy physics experiments, like
the LHC. The computing grid has long been recognized as a solution to these
problems. This technology is being made a more immediate reality to end users
in D0 by developing a grid in the D0 Southern Analysis Region (D0SAR),
D0SAR-Grid, using all available resources within it and a home-grown local task
manager, McFarm. We will present the architecture in which the D0SAR-Grid is
implemented, the use of technology and the functionality of the grid, and the
experience from operating the grid in simulation, reprocessing and data
analyses for a currently running HEP experiment.Comment: 3 pages, no figures, conference proceedings of DPF04 tal
Proposed Steps to Projects Development in the Public Sector
Public Policy and projects have been the subject of discussion in public organizations, with the argument that it organizations has resources, but there are no projects to invest. This research aims to suggest a step-by-step proposal to elaborate a project, based on a public policy, in a way that will improve public management, with specific results and contribute to the quality of life of citizens and society. In this research was analyzed the concepts of public management, public policy, programs and projects, which resulted in a logical, interrelated proposal, consisting of steps that comprise a step by step to elaborate project to a public policy. He sought the qualitative aspect and used the bibliographical research as methodology. Structuring the work in chapters organizing in introduction, theoretical survey and its analysis, proposed a step by step to elaborate project and concluded with the final considerations
On the resonance eigenstates of an open quantum baker map
We study the resonance eigenstates of a particular quantization of the open
baker map. For any admissible value of Planck's constant, the corresponding
quantum map is a subunitary matrix, and the nonzero component of its spectrum
is contained inside an annulus in the complex plane, . We consider semiclassical sequences of eigenstates, such that the
moduli of their eigenvalues converge to a fixed radius . We prove that, if
the moduli converge to , then the sequence of eigenstates
converges to a fixed phase space measure . The same holds for
sequences with eigenvalue moduli converging to , with a different
limit measure . Both these limiting measures are supported on
fractal sets, which are trapped sets of the classical dynamics. For a general
radius , we identify families of eigenstates with
precise self-similar properties.Comment: 32 pages, 2 figure
Semiclassical coherent state propagator for systems with spin
We derive the semiclassical limit of the coherent state propagator for
systems with two degrees of freedom of which one degree of freedom is canonical
and the other a spin. Systems in this category include those involving
spin-orbit interactions and the Jaynes-Cummings model in which a single
electromagnetic mode interacts with many independent two-level atoms. We
construct a path integral representation for the propagator of such systems and
derive its semiclassical limit. As special cases we consider separable systems,
the limit of very large spins and the case of spin 1/2.Comment: 19 pages, no figure
