From maltreatment to psychiatric disorders in childhood and adolescence: The relevance of emotional maltreatment

    Get PDF
Different forms of maltreatment are thought to incur a cumulative and non-specific toll on mental health. However, few large-scale studies draw on psychiatric diagnoses manifesting in early childhood and adolescence to identify sequelae of differential maltreatment exposures, and emotional maltreatment, in particular. Fine-grained multi-source dimensional maltreatment assessments and validated age-appropriate clinical interviews were conducted in a sample of N = 778 3 to 16-year-olds. We aimed to (a) substantiate known patterns of clinical outcomes following maltreatment and (b) analyse relative effects of emotional maltreatment, abuse (physical and sexual), and neglect (physical, supervisory, and moral-legal/educational) using structural equation modeling. Besides confirming known relationships between maltreatment exposures and psychiatric disorders, emotional maltreatment exerted particularly strong effects on internalizing disorders in older youth and externalizing disorders in younger children, accounting for variance over and above abuse and neglect exposures. Our data highlight the toxicity of pathogenic relational experiences from early childhood onwards, urging researchers and practitioners alike to prioritize future work on emotional maltreatment

Civic Participation and Other Interventions That Promote Children\u2019s Tolerance of Migrants

In this chapter, we begin by providing a definition of \u2018tolerance\u2019, illustrating the wide range of attributes associated with the concept in the literature. Second, we identify some key paths through which tolerance can develop at different stages of an individual\u2019s development. Through a literature review, we will track some of the factors that can increase tolerance toward migrants during early and late stages development. Finally, we will conclude by presenting an overview of methodological approaches that practitioners have at their disposal to promote tolerance toward migrants

Redefinition of Aureobasidium pullulans and its varieties

Using media with low water activity, a large numbers of aureobasidium-like black yeasts were isolated from glacial and subglacial ice of three polythermal glaciers from the coastal Arctic environment of Kongsfjorden (Svalbard, Spitsbergen), as well as from adjacent sea water, sea ice and glacial meltwaters. To characterise the genetic variability of Aureobasidium pullulans strains originating from the Arctic and strains originating pan-globally, a multilocus molecular analysis was performed, through rDNA (internal transcribed spacers, partial 28 S rDNA), and partial introns and exons of genes encoding β-tubulin (TUB), translation elongation factor (EF1α) and elongase (ELO). Two globally ubiquitous varieties were distinguished: var. pullulans, occurring particularly in slightly osmotic substrates and in the phyllosphere; and var. melanogenum, mainly isolated from watery habitats. Both varieties were commonly isolated from the sampled Arctic habitats. However, some aureobasidium-like strains from subglacial ice from three different glaciers in Kongsfjorden (Svalbard, Spitsbergen), appeared to represent a new variety of A. pullulans. A strain from dolomitic marble in Namibia was found to belong to yet another variety. No molecular support has as yet been found for the previously described var. aubasidani. A partial elongase-encoding gene was successfully used as a phylogenetic marker at the (infra-)specific level

The Influence of Education and Socialization on Radicalization: An Exploration of Theoretical Presumptions and Empirical Research

    Get PDF
Background and Objective: Research into radicalization does not pay much attention to education. This is remarkable and possibly misses an important influence on the process of radicalization. Therefore this article sets out to explore the relation between education on the one hand and the onset or prevention of radicalization on the other hand. Method: This article is a theoretical literature review. It has analyzed empirical studies-mainly from European countries-about the educational aims, content and style of Muslim parents and parents with (extreme) right-wing sympathies. Results: Research examining similarity in right-wing sympathies between parents and children yields mixed results, but studies among adolescents point to a significant concordance. Research also showed that authoritarian parenting may play a significant role. Similar research among Muslim families was not found. While raising children with distrust and an authoritarian style are prevalent, the impact on adolescents has not been investigated. The empirical literature we reviewed does not give sufficient evidence to conclude that democratic ideal in and an authoritative style of education are conducive to the development of a democratic attitude. Conclusion: There is a knowledge gap with regard to the influence of education on the onset or the prevention of radicalization. Schools and families are underappreciated sources of informal social control and social capital and therefore the gap should be closed. If there is a better understanding of the effect of education, policy as well as interventions can be developed to assist parents and teachers in preventing radicalization. © 2011 The Author(s)

Application of molasses brew in the biosynthesis of pullulan by Aureobasidium pullulans

Molasses brew was applied in the production of pullulan by Aureobasidium pullulans A.p.-3. The brew was diluted to 40 g/L dry weight and supplemented with saccharose to 50,60, and 70 g/L. In the second phase of the experiment the brew was diluted to 10,20 and 30 g/L d. wt. and the media supplemented with saccharose and (NH4)2SO4. After 96 h of incubation 1.36 g of polysaccharide per 100 mL of brew media containing 20 g/L d.wt. was obtained. In the remaining samples, smaller quantities of polysaccharide were acquired. It was thus ascertained that excessive development of fungi biomass and weaker production of pullulan was observed compared with results on synthetic medium.Celem pracy było zbadanie możliwości zastosowania gorzelniczego wywaru melasowego do produkcji pullulanu przez Aureobasidium pullulans A.p-3. Stosowano rozcieńczony wywar melasowy o zawartości suchej masy 40 g/l i uzupełniony sacharozą do 50, 60 i 70 g/l. Jednocześnie kontrolowano proces produkcji pullulanu przez badany szczep w podłożu syntetycznym (próba kontrolna). W drugiej części badań rozcieńczono wywar melasowy do 10, 20 i 30 g/l suchej masy, dodając sacharozę do 60 g/l oraz siarczan amonu do poziomu 0.7 g/l. W pierwszym doświadczeniu stwierdzono intensywny przyrost biomasy komórkowej grzyba, tj. trzykrotnie większy w porównaniu z próbką kontrolną, z jednoczesną małą produkcją pullluanu (Rysunek 1). Rozcieńczenie wywaru melasowego do 10 g/l ograniczyło zarówno rozwój grzyba, jak i wytwarzanie pullulanu (Rysunek 2). Podłoże wywarowe o zawartości 20 g/l s.m. zapewniało niewielki wzrost produkcji pullulanu
