Consistency of Bayesian procedures for variable selection

It has long been known that for the comparison of pairwise nested models, a decision based on the Bayes factor produces a consistent model selector (in the frequentist sense). Here we go beyond the usual consistency for nested pairwise models, and show that for a wide class of prior distributions, including intrinsic priors, the corresponding Bayesian procedure for variable selection in normal regression is consistent in the entire class of normal linear models. We find that the asymptotics of the Bayes factors for intrinsic priors are equivalent to those of the Schwarz (BIC) criterion. Also, recall that the Jeffreys--Lindley paradox refers to the well-known fact that a point null hypothesis on the normal mean parameter is always accepted when the variance of the conjugate prior goes to infinity. This implies that some limiting forms of proper prior distributions are not necessarily suitable for testing problems. Exogamy, endogamy and illegitimate children: family strategies of genoese traders at Granada during Modern Age (16th-18th centuries)

Los mercaderes genoveses como otros grupos nacionales -flamencos, franceses, ingleses- que comerciaban en los principales puertos y ciudades de la Monarquía Hispánica, formaron pequeñas facciones o colonias rodeadas de la población local durante la Edad Moderna. Para el caso de la colonia genovesa de la ciudad de Granada, especialmente para aquellos a los que el asentamiento era siempre preferible a la vuelta a Génova, se planteaba la difícil elección entre una integración en la élite granadina, no siempre fácil o ventajosa, o la endogamia de casar dentro del mismo grupo ligur de la ciudad. Rich, noble and powerful: the image of genoese merchant of the Kingdom of Granada in the Modern Age

Historiography on the image of Genoese merchants in Spain in the Modern Age, almost always using literary sources, has resulted in a pejorative view of the Ligurian. Greedy profiteers, unscrupulous lenders, one of the causes of the decline of the Spanish Monarchy. However, locally, between the elites and the people, this vision is not as negative or at least, not as biased. In the Kingdom of Granada, Genoese are powerful allies, customers, clients and patrons of the spanish elite, splendid match for marriageable daughters and patrons of arts and introducers of architectural styles. Their wealth and power is admired and envied, becoming the Genoese a real cultural and religious reference for oligarchies of Granada. This article is about the image of Genoese merchants through civil and religious chronicles, commercial letters, judicial and notarized documents in Granada. In these sources, the utmost negative view becomes more positive, the Genoese were perceived as wealthy, powerful and nobles, although they were really not.La historiografía sobre la imagen de los mercaderes genoveses en la España de la Edad Moderna, utilizando fuentes casi siempre literarias, ha redundado en una visión peyorativa de los ligures. Avaros, usureros, prestamistas sin escrúpulos, una de las causas del declive de la Monarquía Hispánica. Sin embargo, a nivel local, entre las élites y el pueblo, esta visión ya no es tan negativa o al menos no tan sesgada. En el Reino de Granada, los genoveses son aliados poderosos, compradores, clientes y patrones de la élite castellana, grandes partidos para hijas casaderas y mecenas de las artes e introductores de estilos arquitectónicos. Su riqueza y poder es admirado y envidiado, llegando a ser los genoveses verdaderos referentes culturales y religiosos de las oligarquías granadinas. En este artículo se trata la imagen del mercader genovés a través de crónicas civiles y religiosas, epistolarios mercantiles, documentación notarial y judicial. Ant colony optimized planning for unmanned surface marine vehicles

This paper presents some results achieved from a preliminary study on the use of the Ant Colony Algorithm to plan feasible optimal or suboptimal trajectories for an autonomous ship manoeuvring. The scenario, for this preliminary work, comprises only open sea manoeuvres. The goal involves obtaining the least time consuming ship trajectory between to points, departing from the start point with arbitrary initial speed and attitude values and arriving to the end point with predefined speed and attitude values. The specific dynamic of the ship imposes typical restrictions to its manoeuvrability. In the present case, the non-holonomicity, the rate speed/turn radius, and the imposed forward-only propulsion of the ship make up the main restrictions to the ship movement. For long distances, the problem could be tackled as a classical navigation problem, in which, for the most part of the ship trajectory, techniques such inertial navigation should be enough. The problem arises at short distances when it becomes a manoeuvring problem. In this case to obtain a optimal, --in some cases just a feasible--, trajectory could be a difficult problem.Peer Reviewe

Brief communication: Significant biases in ERA5 output for the McMurdo Dry Valleys region, Antarctica

The ERA5 climate reanalysis dataset plays an important role in applications such as monitoring and modeling climate system changes in polar regions, so the calibration of the reanalysis to ground observations is of great relevance. Here, we compare the 2 m air temperature time series of the ERA5 reanalysis and the near-surface bias-corrected reanalysis to the near-ground air temperature measured at 17 automatic weather stations (AWSs) in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. We find that the reanalysis data have biases that change with the season of the year and do not clearly correlate with elevation. Our results show that future work should rely on secondary observations to calibrate when using the ERA5 reanalysis in polar regions.</p

El nuevo orden económico trilateral. Cuadernos de investigación

El presente trabajo constituye la realización de un proyecto global aprobado por el Consejo Interno del IIEc., para el área de Estudios del Sector Externo, que viene a significar el primer trabajo producido por este equipo de reciente creación. Cabe aclarar que aunque hay un tema central que viene a significar un hilo conductor a lo largo de toda la obra, y que es el estudio del Nuevo Orden Económico Internacional, frente a la Comisión Trilateral, en esencia cada trabajo de los participantes es individual y refleja su muy personal interpretación respecto a la problemática del tema. Ello implica que las posturas ideológicas y posiciones pueden ser divergentes entre los propios autores, lo cual resulta natural tratándose de este tipo de trabajos. En la primera parte del trabajo, intento plantear un marco de referencia que permita comparar las posturas del NOEI frente a las que asume la Trilateral y que a la larga viene a ser la forma como el sistema capitalista ha hallado su nuevo modo de subsistir ante la crisis. En base a este marco general, se puede pasar a particularizar respecto a temas concretos, no muy conectados entre sí, pero que de alguna manera abordan opiniones, razonamientos y análisis de datos y cifras, como lo referente al Nuevo Orden Informativo Internacional, elaborado por la investigación Margot Sotomayor; el asunto del endeudamiento externo en el contexto vigente abordado por Alicia Girón, y el Plan Reagan para el Caribe que desarrolla la licenciada Inés Quiles. Consideramos que este trabajo es de una naturaleza coyuntural por lo que los acontecimientos mundiales avanzan, por lo que este trabajo difícilmente puede ser totalmente actual, aunque lo que sí pensamos que no pierde actualidad son las tesis y posiciones aquí manejadas, que pensamos que aunque polémicas obedecen a una postura crítica y analítica de los autores, corregidas mediante permanentes discusiones en el área, y de revisión sistemática de los manuscritos en sus diferentes versiones. Finalmente reconocemos el mérito académico del pasante de Relaciones Internacionales, Pedro Medina Rodríguez, como ayudante de investigación adscrito a este proyecto, cuyo auxilio fue de vital importancia para el desarrollo de nuestro trabajo. Traducción y exégesis en las Biblias romanceadas

Este ensayo ofrece algunas reflexiones metodológicas para beneficio de hispanistas sobre la edición de las Biblias romanceadas desde la perspectiva del hebraísmo, sobre todo el reto que supone para estas ediciones la impronta textual de la exégesis rabínica –el conjunto de interpretaciones judías inspiradas por la Biblia hebrea–.
