The Association of Early Dietary Supplementation with Vitamin E with the Incidence of Ulcerative Dermatitis in Mice on a C57BL/6 Background
The purpose of this study was to ascertain if prophylactic ingestion of a diet rich in vitamin E would prevent or impede the development of ulcerative dermatitis in mice on a C57BL/6 background. Mice were fed after weaning a standard mouse diet, vitamin E (99 IU/kg), or a mouse diet fortified with vitamin E (3000 IU/ kg). Cases of ulcerative dermatitis were recorded by individuals (i.e. aware of) the diet assignment. The incidence of ulcerative dermatitis in a retrospective cohort of mice on standard diet was compared with the group on the diet fortified with vitamin E. Age was associated with ulcerative dermatitis in standard diet and vitamin E fortified diet groups, r = 0.43, p-value < 0.0001 and r = 0.18, p-value < 0.02, respectively. The average age of incidence for ulcerative dermatitis in the mice fed the standard diet was 89 weeks and for the mice fed the vitamin E diet it was 41 weeks. The unadjusted odds ratio comparing the incidence of ulcerative dermatitis between the two diet groups was 4.6 with a 95% confidence interval of (2.44, 8.58), x2 p-value < 0.0001. Therefore, there was an association between the diets and ulcerative dermatitis, with the mice on the vitamin E fortified diet having almost five times the odds of having ulcerative dermatitis compared with mice on the standard diet. Incidence of ulcerative dermatitis was not influenced by sex or genotype. Our study results show that a diet fortified in vitamin E initiated at weaning does not prevent or impede the development of ulcerative dermatitis in mice on a C57BL/6 background and on the contrary accelerate development when administered to young mice.
Does the thermal spike affect low-energy ion-induced interfacial mixing?
Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to obtain the three-dimensional
distribution of interfacial mixing and cascade defects in Ti/Pt multilayer
system due to single 1 keV impacts at grazing angle of incidence. The
Ti/Pt system was chosen because of its relatively high heat of mixing in the
binary alloy and therefore a suitable candidate for testing the effect of heat
of mixing on ion-beam mixing. However, the calculated mixing profile is not
sensitive to the heat of mixing. Therefore the thermal spike model of mixing is
not fully supported under these irradiation conditions. Instead we found that
the majority of mixing occurs after the thermal spike during the relaxation
process. These conclusions are supported by liquid, vacancy as well as adatom
analysis. The interfacial mixing is in various aspects anomalous in this
system: the time evolution of mixing is leading to a phase delay for Ti mixing,
and Pt exhibits an unexpected double peaked mixing evolution. The reasons to

Cluster-induced crater formation
Using molecular-dynamics simulation, we study the crater volumes induced by
energetic impacts ( km/s) of projectiles containing up to N=1000
atoms. We find that for Lennard-Jones bonded material the crater volume depends
solely on the total impact energy . Above a threshold \Eth, the volume
rises linearly with . Similar results are obtained for metallic materials.
By scaling the impact energy to the target cohesive energy , the crater
volumes become independent of the target material. To a first approximation,
the crater volume increases in proportion with the available scaled energy,

Estrogen worsens incipient hypertriglyceridemic glomerular injury in the obese Zucker rat.BackgroundThe obese Zucker rat (OZR) is a model of glomerulosclerosis and renal failure in the setting of hyperlipidemia, hyperinsulinemia, and obesity. Our prior work in OZRs has shown that ovariectomy attenuates glomerulosclerosis, while added estrogen worsens it. To investigate the mechanism of estrogen's effects on glomerular disease in this model, we evaluated the effects of ovariectomy and estrogen supplementation on seven-week peripubertal OZRs. At this time point, rats exhibit no overt histologic glomerular disease, but are just beginning to show elevated urinary albumin excretion.MethodsFemale OZRs fed ad libitum were ovariectomized at four weeks, with or without estrogen supplementation to raise estrogen levels to just below those of preoestral adults (mean 16.5 pg/mL). Sham-operated controls were included.ResultsOvariectomy normalized albuminuria, lowered total and very low-density lipoprotein triglycerides, and reduced glomerular fibronectin expression. Estrogen supplementation worsened albuminuria and raised total/very low-density lipoprotein triglycerides and total cholesterol. Estrogen-supplemented rats exhibited enhanced glomerular deposition of apo A-IV and apo B, increased glomerular expression of desmin and type IV collagen, and increased interstitial macrophage deposition.ConclusionEstrogen may be permissive for the early development of renal disease in OZRs and may act by increasing triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, which then bind to glomerular cells and initiate or accelerate glomerulosclerosis
Contrasts in hydrology between regions of basal deformation and sliding beneath Rutford Ice Stream, West Antarctica, mapped using radar and seismic data
[1] Spatially coincident radar and seismic data collected two weeks apart on Rutford Ice Stream were analyzed to investigate the mechanical and hydrological characteristics of the ice-bed interface. Seismic data allow the differentiation of bed deformation from basal sliding. In radar data, sliding regions are characterised by highly variable permittivity values. We suggest these regions are characterized by small water bodies, possibly a cavity system. In contrast, deforming regions are characterised by consistent, low permittivity, which suggests intimate ice-sediment contact without a distinct interface. However, in deforming regions we identified three bright radar features similar to 50 m wide, consistent in lateral location over distances of 5-10 km up and downstream, and comprised of water less than similar to 0.2 m deep. We interpret these as part of a water evacuation system, most likely canals. Our results emphasise the great potential of radar and seismic techniques in combination to infer basal conditions beneath ice streams
