Field Induced Magnetic Ordering and Single-ion Anisotropy in the Quasi-1D Haldane Chain Compound SrNi2V2O8: A Single Crystal investigation
Field-induced magnetic ordering in the Haldane chain compound
SrNiVO and effect of anisotropy have been investigated using
single crystals. Static susceptibility, inelastic neutron scattering,
high-field magnetization, and low temperature heat-capacity studies confirm a
non-magnetic spin-singlet ground state and a gap between the singlet ground
state and triplet excited states. The intra-chain exchange interaction is
estimated to be 0.1 meV. Splitting of the dispersions into two
modes with minimum energies 1.57 and 2.58 meV confirms the existence of
single-ion anisotropy . The value of {\it D} is estimated to be
meV and the easy axis is found to be along the
crystallographic {\it c}-axis. Field-induced magnetic ordering has been found
with two critical fields [0.2 T and
0.5 T at 4.2 K]. Field-induced
three-dimensional magnetic ordering above the critical fields is evident from
the heat-capacity, susceptibility, and high-field magnetization study. The
Phase diagram in the {\it H-T} plane has been obtained from the high-field
magnetization. The observed results are discussed in the light of theoretical
predictions as well as earlier experimental reports on Haldane chain compounds
Spin-Wave and Electromagnon Dispersions in Multiferroic MnWO4 as Observed by Neutron Spectroscopy: Isotropic Heisenberg Exchange versus Anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction
High resolution inelastic neutron scattering reveals that the elementary
magnetic excitations in multiferroic MnWO4 consist of low energy dispersive
electromagnons in addition to the well-known spin-wave excitations. The latter
can well be modeled by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with magnetic exchange coupling
extending to the 12th nearest neighbor. They exhibit a spin-wave gap of 0.61(1)
meV. Two electromagnon branches appear at lower energies of 0.07(1) meV and
0.45(1) meV at the zone center. They reflect the dynamic magnetoelectric
coupling and persist in both, the collinear magnetic and paraelectric AF1
phase, and the spin spiral ferroelectric AF2 phase. These excitations are
associated with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction, which is
significant due to the rather large spin-orbit coupling.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

Photofragment Coincidence Imaging of Small I- (H2O)n Clusters Excited to the Charge-transfer-to-solvent State
The photodissociation dynamics of small I{sup -}(H{sub 2}O){sub n} (n = 2-5) clusters excited to their charge-transfer-to-solvent (CTTS) states have been studied using photofragment coincidence imaging. Upon excitation to the CTTS state, two photodissociation channels were observed. The major channel ({approx}90%) is a 2-body process forming neutral I + (H{sub 2}O){sub n} photofragments, and the minor channel is a 3-body process forming I + (H{sub 2}O){sub n-1} + H{sub 2}O fragments. Both process display translational energy (P(E{sub T})) distributions peaking at E{sub T} = 0 with little available energy partitioned into translation. Clusters excited to the detachment continuum rather than to the CTTS state display the same two channels with similar P(E{sub T}) distributions. The observation of similar P(E{sub T}) distributions from the two sets of experiments suggests that in the CTTS experiments, I atom loss occurs after autodetachment of the excited (I(H{sub 2}O){sub n}{sup -})* cluster, or, less probably, that the presence of the excess electron has little effect on the departing I atom
Competitive Cross-Subsidization
Cross-subsidization arises naturally when firms with different comparative ad- vantages compete for consumers with diverse shopping patterns. Firms then face a form of co-opetition, being substitutes for one-stop shoppers and complements for multi-stop shoppers. Competition for one-stop shoppers then drives total prices down to cost, but firms subsidize weak products with the profit made on strong products. While firms and consumers would benefit from cooperation limiting cross- subsidization (e.g., through price caps), banning below-cost pricing instead increases firms’ profits at the expense of one-stop shoppers; this calls for a cautious use of below-cost pricing regulations in competitive markets
Competing exchange interactions on the verge of a metal-insulator transition in the two-dimensional spiral magnet SrFeO
We report a neutron scattering study of the magnetic order and dynamics of
the bilayer perovskite SrFeO, which exhibits a temperature-driven
metal-insulator transition at 340 K. We show that the Fe moments adopt
incommensurate spiral order below K and provide a
comprehensive description of the corresponding spin wave excitations. The
observed magnetic order and excitation spectra can be well understood in terms
of an effective spin Hamiltonian with interactions ranging up to third
nearest-neighbor pairs. The results indicate that the helical magnetism in
SrFeO results from competition between ferromagnetic
double-exchange and antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions whose
strengths become comparable near the metal-insulator transition. They thus
confirm a decades-old theoretical prediction and provide a firm experimental
basis for models of magnetic correlations in strongly correlated metals.Comment: PRL, in pres
Role of commensurate and incommensurate low-energy excitations in the paramagnetic to hidden-order transition of URuSi
We report low-energy inelastic neutron scattering data of the paramagnetic
(PM) to hidden-order (HO) phase transition at in
URuSi. While confirming previous results for the HO and PM phases, our
data reveal a pronounced wavevector dependence of low-energy excitations across
the phase transition. To analyze the energy scans we employ a damped harmonic
oscillator model containing a fit parameter which is expected to
diverge at a second-order phase transition. Counter to expectations the
excitations at show an abrupt step-like suppression of
below , whereas excitations at , associated
with large-moment antiferromagnetism (LMAF) under pressure, show an enhancement
and a pronounced peak of at . Therefore, at the critical HO
temperature , LMAF fluctuations become nearly critical as well. This is
the behavior expected of a super-vector order parameter with nearly degenerate
components for the HO and LMAF leading to nearly isotropic fluctuations in the
combined order-parameter space.Comment: 6 pages; v3 accepted journal version; minor modifications compared to

Lack of neurotrophin-4 causes selective structural and chemical deficits in sympathetic ganglia and their preganglionic innervation
Neurotrophin-4 (NT-4) is perhaps the still most enigmatic member of the neurotrophin family. We show here that NT-4 is expressed in neurons of paravertebral and prevertebral sympathetic ganglia, i.e., the superior cervical (SCG), stellate (SG), and celiac (CG) ganglion. Mice deficient for NT-4 showed a significant reduction (20-30%) of preganglionic sympathetic neurons in the intermediolateral column (IML) of the thoracic spinal cord. In contrast, neuron numbers in the SCG, SG, and CG were unchanged. Numbers of axons in the thoracic sympathetic trunk (TST) connecting the SG with lower paravertebral ganglia were also reduced, whereas axon numbers in the cervical sympathetic trunk (CST) were unaltered. Axon losses in the TST were paralleled by losses of synaptic terminals on SG neurons visualized by electron microscopy. Furthermore, immunoreactivity for the synaptic vesicle antigen SV2 was clearly reduced in the SG and CG. Levels of catecholamines and tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity were dramatically reduced in the SG and the CG but not in the SCG. Despite this severe phenotype in the sympathetic system, blood pressure levels were not reduced and displayed a pattern more typical of deficits in baroreceptor afferents. Numbers of IML neurons were unaltered at postnatal day 4, suggesting a postnatal requirement for their maintenance. In light of these and previous data, we hypothesize that NT-4 provided by postganglionic sympathetic neurons is required for establishing and/or maintaining synapses of IML neurons on postganglionic cells. Impairment of synaptic connectivity may consequently reduce impulse flow, causing a reduction in transmitter synthesis in postganglionic neurons
Midinfrared Conductivity in Orientationally Disordered Doped Fullerides
The coupling between the intramolecular vibrational modes and the doped
conduction electrons in is studied by a calculation of the
electronic contributions to the phonon self energies. The calculations are
carried out for an orientationally ordered reference solid with symmetry and for a model with quenched orientational disorder on the
fullerene sites. In both cases, the dispersion and symmetry of the renormalized
modes is governed by the electronic contributions. The current current
correlation functions and frequency dependent conductivity through the
midinfrared are calculated for both models. In the disordered structures, the
renormalized modes derived from even parity intramolecular phonons are resonant
with the dipole excited single particle spectrum, and modulate the predicted
midinfrared conductivity. The spectra for this coupled system are calculated
for several recently proposed microscopic models for the electron phonon
coupling, and a comparison is made with recent experimental data which
demonstrate this effect.Comment: 32 pages + 9 postscript figures (on request), REVTeX 3.
