    Not just old and sick - the 'will to health' in later life

    The end of the ‘Golden Age’ of welfare capitalism in the 1970s was the prelude to a period of greater individualisation within societies and was accompanied by an increase in the importance of consumption as a way of organising social relations. During the same period there was also an expansion in the discourses aimed at enhancing the government of the autonomous self. One such discourse operates around what has been termed the ‘will to health’: it suggests that health has become a required goal for individual behaviour and has become synonymous with health itself. The generational groups whose lifecourses were most exposed to these changes are now approaching later life. We explore the extent to which social transformations related to risk, consumption and individualisation are reflected in the construction of later-life identities around health and ageing. We examine how the growth in health-related ‘technologies of the self’ have fostered a distinction between natural and normal ageing, wherein the former is associated with coming to terms with physical decline and the latter associated with maintaining norms of self-care aimed at delaying such decline. Finally, we consider anti-ageing medicine as a developing arena for the construction of later-life identities and discuss the implications of the social changes for researching later life

Message traffic for a communications satellite was simulated with a digital computer in order to determine the number of communications channels to meet system requirements.     A case study analysis is presented of the relationships between improvements in the accuracy, frequency, and timeliness of information used in making hydrological forecasts and economic benefits in the areas of hydropower and irrigation. The area chosen for the case study is the Oroville Dam and Reservoir. Emphasis is placed on the use of timely and accurate mapping of the aerial extent of snow in the basin by earth resources survey systems such as LANDSAT. The subject of benefits resulting from improved runoff forecasts is treated in a generalized way without specifying the source of the improvements

    Mind The Gap

    We discuss an optimisation criterion for the exact renormalisation group based on the inverse effective propagator, which displays a gap. We show that a simple extremisation of the gap stabilises the flow, leading to better convergence of approximate solutions towards the physical theory. This improves the reliability of truncations, most relevant for any high precision computation. These ideas are closely linked to the removal of a spurious scheme dependence and a minimum sensitivity condition. The issue of predictive power and a link to the Polchinski RG are discussed as well.     NEOWISE observations of comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) as it approaches Mars

    The Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) mission observed comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) three times at 3.4 {\mu}m and 4.6 {\mu}m as the comet approached Mars in 2014. The comet is an extremely interesting target since its close approach to Mars in late 2014 will be observed by various spacecraft in-situ. The observations were taken in 2014 Jan., Jul. and Sep. when the comet was at heliocentric distances of 3.82 AU, 1.88 AU, and 1.48 AU. The level of activity increased significantly between the Jan. and Jul. visits but then decreased by the time of the observations in Sep., approximately 4 weeks prior to its close approach to Mars.     The impact of air pollutant and methane emission controls on tropospheric ozone and radiative forcing: CTM calculations for the period 1990-2030

    To explore the relationship between tropospheric ozone and radiative forcing with changing emissions, we compiled two sets of global scenarios for the emissions of the ozone precursors methane (CH<sub>4</sub>), carbon monoxide (CO), non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) and nitrogen oxides (NO<sub>x</sub>) up to the year 2030 and implemented them in two global Chemistry Transport Models. The 'Current Legislation' (CLE) scenario reflects the current perspectives of individual countries on future economic development and takes the anticipated effects of presently decided emission control legislation in the individual countries into account. In addition, we developed a 'Maximum technically Feasible Reduction' (MFR) scenario that outlines the scope for emission reductions offered by full implementation of the presently available emission control technologies, while maintaining the projected levels of anthropogenic activities. Whereas the resulting projections of methane emissions lie within the range suggested by other greenhouse gas projections, the recent pollution control legislation of many Asian countries, requiring introduction of catalytic converters for vehicles, leads to significantly lower growth in emissions of the air pollutants NO<sub>x</sub>, NMVOC and CO than was suggested by the widely used and more pessimistic IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) SRES (Special Report on Emission Scenarios) scenarios (Nakicenovic et al., 2000), which made Business-as-Usual assumptions regarding emission control technology. With the TM3 and STOCHEM models we performed several long-term integrations (1990-2030) to assess global, hemispheric and regional changes in CH<sub>4</sub>, CO, hydroxyl radicals, ozone and the radiative climate forcings resulting from these two emission scenarios. Both models reproduce broadly the observed trends in CO, and CH<sub>4</sub> concentrations from 1990 to 2002. <P style='line-height: 20px;'> For the 'current legislation' case, both models indicate an increase of the annual average ozone levels in the Northern Hemisphere by 5ppbv, and up to 15ppbv over the Indian sub-continent, comparing the 2020s (2020-2030) with the 1990s (1990-2000). The corresponding higher ozone and methane burdens in the atmosphere increase radiative forcing by approximately 0.2 Wm<sup>-2</sup>. Full application of today's emissions control technologies, however, would bring down ozone below the levels experienced in the 1990s and would reduce the radiative forcing of ozone and methane to approximately -0.1 Wm<sup>-2</sup>. This can be compared to the 0.14-0.47 Wm<sup>-2</sup> increase of methane and ozone radiative forcings associated with the SRES scenarios. While methane reductions lead to lower ozone burdens and to less radiative forcing, further reductions of the air pollutants NO<sub>x</sub> and NMVOC result in lower ozone, but at the same time increase the lifetime of methane. Control of methane emissions appears an efficient option to reduce tropospheric ozone as well as radiative forcing

    Density distributions of superheavy nuclei

    We employed the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model to investigate the density distributions and their dependence on nuclear shapes and isospins in the superheavy mass region. Different Skyrme forces were used for the calculations with a special comparison to the experimental data in 208^{208}Pb. The ground-state deformations, nuclear radii, neutron skin thicknesses and α\alpha-decay energies were also calculated. Density distributions were discussed with the calculations of single-particle wavefunctions and shell fillings. Calculations show that deformations have considerable effects on the density distributions, with a detailed discussion on the 292^{292}120 nucleus. Earlier predictions of remarkably low central density are not supported when deformation is allowed for.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figure

    Social Impact Measurement (SIM) experiencing and future Directions for the third sector organisations in the east of England.

    Exploring ways to measure impact is not a new focus for the third sector or social enterprises, but one that is becoming more of a concern as organisations look for ways to improve what they do and demonstrate their impact to others. In part this requires a shift in thinking from measuring outputs to measuring outcomes, and the challenge is to find ways of measuring the softer elements related to social inclusion. There is also interest from outside of organisations with pressure from philanthropic funds and public service commissioners to find ways of making their decisions on how resources are allocated. Social Impact Measurement (SIM) is the process by which an organisation provides evidence that its services are providing real and tangible benefits to people or the environment (SEEE 2009). Issue 2 of the EEDA Social Impact Measurement (SIM) project examines a range of SIM models currently adopted by Third Sector Organisations and social enterprises. The aim is “Ultimately …. to gain a better understanding of the various social impact measurement models” (EEDA ITT 2009-082). Through the study of the experiences of a set of organisations, this research will examine why organisations are measuring impact, how they are doing this, the challenges they face and how these can be overcome. This will involve a review and evaluation of a wide range of tools used by third sector organisations to measure the impact of the work they do. It will provide guidance to assist Third Sector Organisations in selecting approaches to measuring impact and help public authorities to assess the claims made by those who are using impact measurement tools. The research has involved a review of the literature and over 40 different methods commonly in use in the UK. Following the development of questionnaires, interviews were carried out with 40 third sector organisations, 32 of whom had carried out social impact measurement. A further 10 organisations or individuals providing training in social impact measurement to organisations in the East of England Region were also interviewed. Data was also collected on the issues raised by the attendees of two training courses on social impact measurement, one covering Social Return On Investment (led by Kate Lee) and one covering Social Accounting and Audit (led by John Pearce) each of which had 12 participants.
