Hygrothermal performance of building envelopes in the tropics under operative conditions : condensation and mould growth risk appraisal

    Get PDF
Poor indoor hygrothermal performance increases the risk of indoor moisture problems and deterioration due to mould growth, corrosion and damage to archival materials. Hence, proper control of indoor thermohygric intensity abates indoor moisture and its associated problems. This paper presents the results of envelopes hygrothermal performance assessments in a hot and humid climate building with varying operational profile between adjacent spaces. The case-studied building runs on 24hrs cooling mode in one part against natural and/or mechanical supply-exhaust fan means on the other. In-situ experiments were combined with hygrothermal analytical methods to assess the envelope thermal quality together with the operative conditions against condensation and mould growth risks. The results show that the building is overcooled leading to poor envelope hygrothermal performance with associated condensation and mould growth problems on non-airconditioned sides of the envelopes

    Get PDF
The rapid advancement of the welding technology has simultaneously increased the demand for the online monitoring system in order to control the process. Among the methods that could be possibly used to assess the weld condition, an air-borne acoustic method grasps the attention from scholars due to its ability to provide a simple, non-contact, and low-cost measurement system. However, it is still lack of resources involving this subject in an attempt to deeply understand the emitted sound behaviour during welding especially when dealing with a complete deviation of a process parameter, welding types, workpiece material as well as the noise from the surrounding. This paper reviews the application of the acoustic method in monitoring the welding process. Specifically, this review emphasized the source of both structure-borne and air-borne acoustic during the welding process and the significance of applying the acoustic method in more detail. By focusing on the liquid state welding process, the scope of discussion converged on the arc and laser welding process. In the last part of this review, the potential future advancement of this method is pointed out before the overall conclusion is made

Problems on laser weld quality still remain as vital issue even though the process was done with optimized condition which results the demand on robust monitoring method during the process. Until recently, many methods have been explored and air-borne acoustic are among of methods that have been proven to be able to detect the presence of defect. However, despite detection, it is essential if the type of defect could be identified as it gives different severity level to the development of failure. This work presents the identification of defect during pulse mode laser welding through the analysis of sound. In achieving the goal of this study, bead on plate weld have been done onto the 22MnB5 boron steel plate repeatedly based on 3 different set of experiment with the variation in the level of parameters. Simultaneously, time-series sound signal was acquired along the process before it was converted into frequency spectrum before further analysis. According to the result, it was recorded that the variation of parameters level in pulse mode laser welding process lead to the presence of porosity and crack. Relatively, the trend of sound frequency spectrum were also significantly changes its trend in respond to the parameters level variation. It was discovered that the dominant frequency for the signals acquired from the process which produce good quality weld, porosity and crack recorded the same range which was between 5 to 7 kHz. Uniquely, the existence of porosity could be identified by the occurrence of peak at around 9 kHz while the presence of crack could be recognized by the occurrence of peak at 8 kHz and 11 kHz. This trend was proven to be consistent in repeated experiment according to the result from principal component analysis. Based from the result in this study, it could be conclude that the identification of defect could be done by the analysis of the acquired sound during the process. Significantly, this would expand the ability of acoustic method for quality monitoring purpose as the identification of defect is also important in quality control

Narrowing of ureter can be due to malignant or benign causes. Temporary double-J (DJ) stents, various metallic stent designs, or definitive corrective surgery can be the options management for ureteric stricture. As an alternative from DJ stents, Memokath-051TM (MMK-051TM) can be inserted in strictured ureters post radiotherapy for advanced prostate cancer patients. We present a case of an advanced prostate cancer which bilateral DJ Stents placed within MMK-051TM. A 76-year-old man with underlying hormone sensitive advanced prostate cancer completed radiotherapy. Post radiotherapy he developed bilateral ureteric strictures  and bilateral DJ stents  inserted.  He had to underwent multiple change of stents due to blockage. Patient had MMK-051TM inserted, however complicated with blockage due to encrustation. Improvisation method done by putting the bilateral DJ stents within the MMK-051TM. Patient had no more blockage of MMK-051TM after the placement of DJ stents within it. However, patient succumbed to death a year after the last procedure. Our case report highlighted encrustation of metallic ureteric stents and a novel approach to overcome this problem. Introduction  of additional DJ stents  not only reduced the incidence of MMK-051TM blockage but also improved the quality of life of the patient.

Adaptive memory-based single distribution resampling for particle filter

    Get PDF
The restrictions that are related to using single distribution resampling for some specific computing devices’ memory gives developers several difficulties as a result of the increased effort and time needed for the development of a particle filter. Thus, one needs a new sequential resampling algorithm that is flexible enough to allow it to be used with various computing devices. Therefore, this paper formulated a new single distribution resampling called the adaptive memory size-based single distribution resampling (AMSSDR). This resampling method integrates traditional variation resampling and traditional resampling in one architecture. The algorithm changes the resampling algorithm using the memory in a computing device. This helps the developer formulate a particle filter without over considering the computing devices’ memory utilisation during the development of different particle filters. At the start of the operational process, it uses the AMSSDR selector to choose an appropriate resampling algorithm (for example, rounding copy resampling or systematic resampling), based on the current computing devices’ physical memory. If one chooses systematic resampling, the resampling will sample every particle for every cycle. On the other hand, if it chooses the rounding copy resampling, the resampling will sample more than one of each cycle’s particle. This illustrates that the method (AMSSDR) being proposed is capable of switching resampling algorithms based on various physical memory requirements. The aim of the authors is to extend this research in the future by applying their proposed method in various emerging applications such as real-time locator systems or medical applications

    Get PDF
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) has recorded appreciable progress both in technology and application.Despite this progress, there still exist wide performance gap between human speech recognition (HSR) and ASR which has inhibited its full adoption in real life situation.A brief review of research progress on Yorùbá Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) is presented in this paper focusing of variability as factor contributing to performance gap between HSR and ASR with a view of x-raying the advances recorded, major obstacles, and chart a way forward for development of ASR for Yorùbá that is comparable to those of other tone languages and of developed nations. This is done through extensive surveys of literatures on ASR with focus on Yorùbá.Though appreciable progress has been recorded in advancement of ASR in the developed world, reverse is the case for most of the developing nations especially those of Africa.Yorùbá like most of languages in Africa lacks both human and materials resources needed for the development of functional ASR system much less taking advantage of its potentials benefits. Results reveal that attaining an ultimate goal of ASR performance comparable to human level requires deep understanding of variability factors

    Get PDF
Research on machining process of Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) is becoming important as the material was believed suitable to be used for cutting tools of advanced aeronautical structure. Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) was regarded as the suitable method to machine PCD due its noncontact process nature. The objective of this research is to determine the influence of several EDM parameter such as sparking current, pulse duration, and pulse interval to the material removal rate and surface roughness of the machined PCD. Instead of significantly influenced the material removal rate, the sparking current was also highly influenced tha surface roughness. Highest material removal rate of approximately 0.005mm3/s was recorded by the EDM process with the highest current used of 5A, and lowest pulse interval of 1µs. The influence of pulse duration is not clearly seen at the lowest pulse interval used. On the other hand, 0.4µm was the lowest surface roughness value obtained in this research indicated by the highest sparking current, highest sparking duration and lowest sparking interval of 5A, 1µs and 1µs respectively
