    Attentional Performance, Age and Scholastic Achievement in Healthy Children

    Attentional processes in children play a critical role in daily school demands and accomplishments. Studies on the association of attentional processes with school achievement and age in healthy school children are scarce. The aim of the present study was to identify correlations between dimensions of attentional performance, scholastic achievement and age.An extensive testing battery was used to assess a wide range of attentional dimensions. A principal component analysis revealed three factors that are related to attentional performance (distractibility, lapses of attention, cognitive speed). Age was negatively associated with distractibility, lapses of attention and cognitive speed, indicating that distractibility and lapses of attention decreased with age in healthy children and resulted in lower cognitive speed.Attentional processes in healthy children should be measured in relation to distractibility, lapses of attention and cognitive speed

    Assessing ADHD symptoms in children and adults:Evaluating the role of objective measures

    Background: Diagnostic guidelines recommend using a variety of methods to assess and diagnose ADHD. Applying subjective measures always incorporates risks such as informant biases or large differences between ratings obtained from diverse sources. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that ratings and tests seem to assess somewhat different constructs. The use of objective measures might thus yield valuable information for diagnosing ADHD. This study aims at evaluating the role of objective measures when trying to distinguish between individuals with ADHD and controls. Our sample consisted of children (n = 60) and adults (n = 76) diagnosed with ADHD and matched controls who completed self- and observer ratings as well as objective tasks. Diagnosis was primarily based on clinical interviews. A popular pattern recognition approach, support vector machines, was used to predict the diagnosis. Results: We observed relatively high accuracy of 79% (adults) and 78% (children) applying solely objective measures. Predicting an ADHD diagnosis using both subjective and objective measures exceeded the accuracy of objective measures for both adults (89.5%) and children (86.7%), with the subjective variables proving to be the most relevant. Conclusions: We argue that objective measures are more robust against rater bias and errors inherent in subjective measures and may be more replicable. Considering the high accuracy of objective measures only, we found in our study, we think that they should be incorporated in diagnostic procedures for assessing ADHD

    Case Reports: Arsenic pollution in Thailand, Bangladesh and Hungary

    The purpose of this review is to share information on how arsenic contamination arises and what options are available to mitigate it when it occurs. We describe how contamination arose in three countries, two Asian, and one European, and the approaches employed to resolve it. In the three selected countries, the presence of arsenic is both long term and of geological origin, yet the affected regions have distinct and contrasting concerns, both in the scale of the contamination of the abiotic environment and in the extent of human health impacts arising from arsenic exposure. Therefore, we hope that knowledge of the range of problems encountered in the three countries, and their potential solutions, will contain common themes that, at least partly, facilitate stakeholder endeavours to address arsenic contamination in other affected regions
